Anyone for a WIP thread?

LonelyOversharer · 04/01/2019 20:40

With the new year, I'm going for a low spend 2019.

On this note I have exactly eleventy million wip's to finish (rather than buy new yarn to start snother project). Does anyone else fancy a thread where we dig out old projects, start to finish those endless crochet blankets or just jolly each other along?

To start, I have a "door blanket" mid crochet (2m x 1m), and 4 christmas elves I knitted but did not finish.

I'm predominantly a knitter and bad crocheter, but any wip crafts welcome.

Anyone?

That's lovely! I assume it's on a polystyrene wreath ring - could you use something else (trying to avoid plastic)?

SoupDragon · 30/01/2019 09:30

Surely if the ring is a "permanent" item then the plastic is largely irrelevant. You'd have avoid acrylic yarn too and all man made fibres. The amount of plastic in our lives is truly horrendous! I try to avoid single use plastic but even that is hard with wrapped stuff and those stupid plastic tag things that hold tickets on clothing (amongst other things). I never used to give a thought to things like cat food pouches or bags for frozen veg.

SoupDragon · 30/01/2019 09:31

Anyway, this was not a WIP but did use yarn frlmstash so counts as "clearing out" in my book!

It was the most perfect marriage of yarn and project I've had so far.

I do try to avoid acrylic though it's not always possible especially given my FUSSY DS. Ideally I like to make things with recycled stuff so maybe a fabric wreath base stuffed firmly?

(You can put frozen veg bags in the plastic bag recycling).

That's a gorgeous shawl! I love shawls but have no use for them in my wardrobe (if I'm cold at home, I put on a jumper or use a blanket, and my office is roasting!)

SoupDragon · 30/01/2019 10:21

Maybe a stuffed pair of tights?

SoupDragon · 30/01/2019 10:25

It's more of a scarf - I wore it in the snow last night and it was lovely! It's long enough to go round my neck twice with only short tails so good for stuffing in a coat.

Thinking about it, You can get fat "willow" wreaths - I assume it's willow.

Plastic is everywhere. When you think of it, it's horrifying and I wonder if it can actually be fixed.

choppolata · 30/01/2019 12:57

soup beautiful!!!! Is it from a pattern or are you a super crafty magic dragon?
Agree with others on plastic, I've been saving food containers for seedlings and have a huge pile after only a week. I'm thinking a second life is better than nothing. So difficult to avoid it though, the supermarkets don't help matters.

SoupDragon · 30/01/2019 13:39

It's a pattern: www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/copper-beech-3

Although I have just "made up" a version by combining it with the shape from another pattern. and I might have accidentally ordered more yarn in different colour ways to make it again

choppolata · 30/01/2019 20:06

I have this one in the UFO pile www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/now-in-a-minute but I am not getting on with it at all (my yarn is not as lovely as the one she uses, which doesn't help) But if I frog and do your pattern instead soup that still counts as finishing it, right? Wink

SoupDragon · 30/01/2019 20:28

That is absolutely the same as finishing it.

The wreath centre is polystyrene. Tbh I didn’t think of its recycling possibilities because I intend to keep it forever and expect my children to treasure it long after I’ve gone Grin. But could I have made a wreath core out of something that was itself recycled? Maybe, but nowhere near as neatly. Maybe that wouldn’t matter though. It’s food for thought in future.

I need to stem the tide of packaging coming into the house before I worry about anything else, that really not good. My council doesn’t recycle any plastic except bottles Hmm.

I’ve only just sat down tonight, so no crocheting here! Don’t think I can be bothered to start now, it’s nearly bedtime.

Love those colours Soup, was it a graduated colour yarn or balls of different colours?

SoupDragon · 31/01/2019 07:24

It was a graduated yarn (Cabaret). And it was properly graduated too with no sharp colour changes - apart from where they'd knotted it once but I managed to rejoin it in a more appropriate place into colour change.

LonelyOversharer · 31/01/2019 19:19

I think I have some caberet in various turquoises and teals. There is a set theme to my colours! I think the photos I am trying to attach are too big, they break the paperclip button! But my tablet takes awful colour photos.

So. Blanket done. The cotton herringbone tape is here (so it doesn't shlumpf too much when hanging), so I'll dig out my machine at the weekend and do that.

I still have dome etsy bits to do, but am now crocheting my temperature blanket. Loving it, and desperate for the daytime temp to drop to -4 so I can use the sparkly white! I also started to crochet a shawl, in some divine Araucania (?) In lilac and turquoise (see my theme?) That I got on ebay years ago. I learnt the pattern watching a tutorial! I can now increase, decrease, and do a wrap stitch!

But I'm so tired after work, crocheting a small granny square is about all I am good for.

Pic, but poor colour from my tablet.

WIPs?

Oh I have those! Which one to admit --and commit- to?

This is a miniature version of a triangular scarf I've made - making this for a friend's toy, using stash yarn and 2mm needles. I could probably finish this in a day if I got on with it.

Then that would only leave my number of WIPs at.... lots Grin

Finished the WIP

As modelled by DD1's bunny, who is perhaps a little larger than the intended recipient.

Will post to friend Monday.

Cracking on with my jumper -on the boring bit and didnt make progress as I had hoped but got lots of sleep instead Grin
Cleared out a couple of boxes and found some more WIP Blush

Redbrook · 03/02/2019 10:04

I’m so glad I’ve found this thread - it’s made me feel so much better about the ever increasing number of half finished projects I have dotted (hidden) around the house. These are the ones I definitely know about :

Knitted cardigan - awaiting 2 sleeves but I think I was a bit optimistic about which size to make and I very much doubt it will fit, so that’s put me off completing it.
Knitted bag - just needs stitching together, but I don’t like the knitted shoulder strap so I need to find something else.
Just started a teddy bear - it’s a gift for a baby due in 2 weeks so I need to get it done. But should only take a couple of evenings, and I’m confident I can get this one finished.
Almost finished a knitted gilet - just waiting for buttons (which I got yesterday).

2 crochet cushion covers - I’m trying to do a few rows a night to get these finished in the next week or so.
Finished my Chernobyl blanket last night.
2 kits for making shawls/wraps - goodness knows why I bought 2 - well actually I do know, the colours are beautiful and they were a bargain. But I have never ever used a shawl. Might end up a bed runners. These are not technically wip because they are not yet started.

Cross stitch of Mowgli and Balou from the jungle book which I started for my then newborn nephew - he turned 15 in December!
Cross stitch of New York in the rain - bought after my first trip there in 2007. My excuse with this one is that I need very good natural light to see the colours properly and in that means I can only do it in the summer ( which is a gardening time, not a cross stitch time).
Think that’s it - apart from a few random crochet squares which need the ends doing before I can send to Woolly Hugs .

It’s worse than I thought !

drspouse · 03/02/2019 15:50

I managed to get my sewing machine working again, so I've excitingly mended 3 pairs of trousers, one top and one dress for the DCs.

LonelyOversharer · 03/02/2019 15:58

elfy thats lovely! I like your shawl underneath too!

Welcome redbrook we are all in the same boat here I am firmly in denial

So, this week. I haven't done a lot tbh. Caught up to the 20th January on my temp blanket, dd2 and I did a plan, it is going to hang over the sizes of my king size bed! Joining as I go, and darning in ends, so at years end, it will be a finished article.

My next task is to finish the stylecraft batik blankets. 2x single bed size. Most of the squares are done, some even bordered and blocked! Will sort an order, so I can start to join them.

Keep going everyone!

I have lots of projects that are a bag with pattern, cloth, sundries and matching thread - but no cutting or work yet done.

I have a bundle of baby fabric and an old (good cotton, too good to waste) sheet that I managed to make 1 set of baby burp cloths with and plan to make more, when I get time.

I have at least 2 of the Ikea 40l tubs (they may even be 60l, I'm not sure) of quilting cottons and other fabrics, and 2 slightly smaller tubs of wool. Most bought with ideas in mind.

A big stash of card making materials.

And about 15 Xstitch kits - 2 are WIPs.

The other actual WIPs are a top that I started to sew for myself, um, maybe 18 years ago, and a blanket I started knitting about 6 years ago (I add a few rows every now and again but it needs a good 20 minutes to do even 1 row and I don't have spare time).

I think I need to start to hold myself accountable....

SilverHawk · 05/02/2019 21:02

@MyArris, I wonder how your're getting on with the Persian Tiles blanket?
I finished one back in October. Like you I started with a trial motif from odd yarn, decided it was doable and set forth! I decided to do eight motifs at a time. Okay so far and then it turned into an obsessive battle, not just addictive like the Attic24 blankets. It turned into a true love /hate relationship. However the sense of achievement was second to none.
Just to prove that I don't learn... I'm doing number 2 in the light blue version. This time, I'm doing all sixteen motifs in one go.
There is no mania setting in so far Grin
PS by doing 8/16 at a time means I do 8/16 of each row/colour.
It does save faffing around (a little).
