Following on from my other thread I would like to thank you all for pointing me in the right direction wrt learning to knit.

That site you linked to NQC was fab, really good, I have taught myself how to cast on, purl, cast off, and reminded myself of the good old knit stitch! (I have a picture of my trial piece if anyone fancies a larf)

And now I have a project - I am going to knit myself a cosy for my cafetiere. There I've said it, can't go back on it now

So what are you all working on? Anyone want to join me in my Knitting Circle?

I am working on another hat. It was meant to be a baby hat, but is coming up too big, whoops. It's got some interesting stripes. I'll do a picture sometime.

I am thinking about knitting a sweater, too. Probably won't do it. I have "knitting without tears", and do need to have a go at it.

I have just finished knitting a cardigan for a friend's baby (bought buttons today to finish it off), and last night I knitted a stripey hat for ds because () he didn't have one! (bad mummy alert!).

I shall probably go back to making myself a scarf for now. I got some beautiful variegated pale blue sock wool from a secret mn santa at Christmas, together with a wonderful book of knitting patterns, and some bamboo double-ended needles. I agonised for ages over whether or not to knit socks, but I knew I probably wouldn't wear them - so I decided to knit a scarf from a pattern in the lovely book so that people can then compliment me on it!!

After that - I have got some fab pale yellow wool (also a mn santa gift!) which I am going to make into something for the baby (due in July). Not sure what to make yet; I will be on the lookout soon for a drop-dead gorgeous pattern

And congrats on teaching yourself to knit!! Best thing I ever learnt to do!

I am very sadly considering buying that magazine of teaching you how to knit

I knew how to do the knit stitch, from there I bought a book and sat with wool, needles, book and internet and spent hours perfecting the rest!

I'm very much a beginner, but I'm taking a break from knitting more baby booties (which make a really fab gift) and knitting a scarf (good beginners choice) with some gorgeous variegated pink wool which probably has a clever name but I'm going to call it thin and thick! It's coming up nice and I can't wait to wear it! (wool only cost about 49p a ball too!)

im self taught too un employed pregnancy boredom am currently kntting a shrug in sirdar vegas in the dark purple colour and a baby hat from debbie bliss baby knits

ooh exciting. I'm knitting ds3 a jumper all in knit stich, and kind of made from square (really easy all you need to be able to do is knit, cast on and cast off).

After this I'm sticking to big needles big wool, am too impatient!

how do you know what size nedles to get? do i need to get loads in different sizes?

After many years of packing all my woolly stash up in the loft....I have recently started up again.

I as good as stopped knitting when I had DS, and then after having DD.....I just didn't have the time and resort to papercrafting.

Now DD is at school...I have dusted off my knitting needles. Using up lots of oddments first..made a pair of wrist warmer thingies at the weekend and I about to start on my first knitalong!!!!!

I MUST not be tempted to buy more wool though...got to use up the boxes full of it up in the loft first.......she says

Hairy, this is the site I learned from: Knitting Help - I found the videos brilliant.

hairymclary, the pattern you're using tells you which size to use, or if you're creative and not sure, it usually tells you on the wool band. If you're new and have a project in mind, you need only buy the size you need, but over time, you'll collect lots of different sizes and it saves frustration when wanting to get started on something and not having the right size.

My needles are 4mm - I would just get one set to begin with. If you get seriously into it you might want to build up a collection.

Dingle, don't be so hard on yourself, there's so many nice yarns to choose from it's soooo tempting......

yep my first pair were 4mm too, good all rounders, I find 3mm is best for baby clothes though!

ok. dh will despair. I really ought to finish off my photo albums before I start more projects.

I don't suppose any of you knit wool soakers (for cloth nappies?)

Now now 3Ddonut.....do not encourage me!! I am suppose to be on a mega stash diet as we are hoping to get the extension done this year. ( it would mean a crafty room all of my own!!)

'stash diet' don't let my dh hear you say that!

A couple of balls of wool couldn't hurt an extension fund. Could they???

I don't do wool soakers, but I think a friend had some. Her gran was a great knitter.

what am I making atm? am feeling sooooo low on inspiration. I am making a clanger for another mnetter. and some bits for my friend who is hopefully pg-IVF (they are for her to cheer her up, am being most careful here, knitted flowers and suchlike, think a knitted bunny might be a bit inappropriate)

I think I might make some fingerless gloves a la last minute knitted gifts. Yes,

but first I am going to make some nice beaded needles.

(ps you do know you can make lovely needles for nowt...and dye your own wool with food dye...and all sorts really...)

well I can sneak in here, but only quietly because I have too many unfinished knitting projects on the go (lack of motivation to sew anything up and lack the will to block anything either) so for now I am going to stick to scarves and maybe even a trendy cushion cover. But on the Xmas hols I taught myself to crochet and may well try a crocheted beanie next.

I am also a truly lumpen handed knitter who holds the wool in a pincer grip in my right hand - my New Year's resolution is to learn something fancy like the Continental style and improve my technique. Maybe another scarf?

i am currently knitting funky dungarees in orangey yellowy purpley whitey swirly wool.

not nearly as gross as that sounds, honest!

it is only the second thing i have ever knitted but they are going well so far and will hopefully be done by this time next week!

i find oxfam is fab for kntting patterns, loads of retro/vintage kids patterns from yonks ago at 30p a time!

the dungarees are for 8 month old dd btw. not me

Re Knitty - does anybody actually wear those swirly knitted socks - or are they just to inflict on your babies and children? They look great but I can't ever imagine leaving the house in a pair.
