Following on from my other thread I would like to thank you all for pointing me in the right direction wrt learning to knit.

That site you linked to NQC was fab, really good, I have taught myself how to cast on, purl, cast off, and reminded myself of the good old knit stitch! (I have a picture of my trial piece if anyone fancies a larf)

And now I have a project - I am going to knit myself a cosy for my cafetiere. There I've said it, can't go back on it now

So what are you all working on? Anyone want to join me in my Knitting Circle?

Am I the only one who feels like knitting is like a 'dirty little secret'

It makes me feel old .. yet v. relaxed .. but that's cos I remember mum doing it

this thread is turning into greek ..

Knock knock, may I come in? I'm about to start on some baby stuff for my nephew and dw's twins, due in April. They don't know what sex the babies are but I've got some lovely FDebbie Bliss wool which will suit boys and/or girls. It feels a bit weird knitting woollies under African skies, I must admit! I'm also slowly making squares for a Debbie Abrahams blanket. (Is it a legal requirement for knitting book authors to be named Debbie? )

twiglett - kniting is definitely my secret! i think only one person in rl knows i do it (outside of my immediate family!)! dh mocks me quite a lot too. how rude. no nice knitted socks for him!

why is this though? we should wave our knitting from the rooftops!!!

just reread my post (which in my excitement at thoughts of knitting I didn't preview )

I didn't mean a "cooltea cosy", obviously, rather a "cool tea cosy". I want my tea hotter, not cooler. Hopefully that's clear now.

lots of folk down my neck of the woods get together in packs, in various pubs and knit en masse. Looks very strange, but I applaud them (and really want to join them but wonder how I'd get any drinking done if wielding needles too )

oh hi, can I come in on your chat as I too have a secret knitting thing going on! I just started to knit last year and it was strange, as my mum can't knit or sew to save her life, so it was all new to me but I LOVE it. It is so relaxing....

embarrassed to admit have only made v v easy things still...baby cardigan and hats, scarves, and a shawl. Currently doing a pink and girly scarf...I find it interesting as when I buy clothes I'm totally not pink and girly but when I buy wool it's always that stuff I go for, dunno why.....

Someone was hunting for a cool tea cosy pattern before Xmas ... it was one of the lentilly folk, but I don't remember who ...

I knit in public all the time. Well, not so much these days as I haven't been anywhere appropriate (it's always cold or smoky), but I do it at committee meetings, outdoors in the summer, whatever.

Zippi, there's a pattern for a felted laptop case in a book I've got and it was also in a magazine. You might as well start with that since you'll need so many- I have heard of people taking up knitting to stop them smoking, or eating so much, or to relax them, but never before to stop them buying laptops, I have to say

McDreamy, there are quite alot of pattern booklets around for dolls' knitting, baby and girl dolls. They come up on eBay loads, or they have them in John Lewis. There may well be some online too.

Hello newcomers! Goodness I never thought there would be so many closet knitters

Aviatrix, it doesn't have to be knitting or MN. I knit while I MN so I can pretend I've gone out to the local knitting group. (How's ds sleep btw?)

Jeangenie, I'm not working to a pattern for the cafetiere cosy - I just measured it. Now I'm knitting a big rectangle to fit and will add buttons or ties at the end. I'm about a third of the way through, shouldn't taake long to finish.

Um, fillyjonk, you dye your own wool. You make your own needles. In what way are you not lentilly folk? (And I don't mean it in a pejorative way - I'm often considered lentilly, particularly on here. Less so if I stand next to you, though )

oh lol, nqc, i don't mind.

i don't fondle crystals though and am doing a science degree so i kind of thought that meant I couldn't be.

oh i do like a nice lentil tea cosy

NotQuiteCockney · 11/01/2007 19:05

Ah, fair enough, filyjonk, I do assume lentillers aren't very sciency. I have a comp sci degree, and don't go much for mysticism or alternative medicine, so my lentilly credentials aren't that solid either, I guess.

Fillyjonk · 11/01/2007 19:27

hmm

I think I want to be one now though

maybe I'll switch to biology, thats quite lentilly

(my first degree is in dead languages. thats quite lentilly, isn't it?

oh and I make my own yoghurt and have a bike with 2 child seats.

NotQuiteCockney · 11/01/2007 21:49

Yeah, my first is philosophy. Not sure how lentilly that is.

I ride a bike with two kids on it, too. I don't have the freaky Dutch bike, though, just a normal one with a seat in front of me, and a half-bike on the back, so DS1 can pedal. (And, today, sing songs about the rain, and London, and it being Tuesday. )

Oh, no, Pruni, those are cool interests here.

I don't see why some lentil weavery attributes (making things, wanting to know how stuff works) go with others (liking crystals, believing in random weird crap). Well, they don't really, do they.

I don't think people think of me as lentilly in real life, but it's hard to tell. They do feel compelled to justify their food choices to me. Oh, and they assume I'm vegetarian. But surely lentilly folk have long floaty hair and long floaty dresses, right? (Except it would all get caught in the bike chain ...)
