Following on from my other thread I would like to thank you all for pointing me in the right direction wrt learning to knit.

That site you linked to NQC was fab, really good, I have taught myself how to cast on, purl, cast off, and reminded myself of the good old knit stitch! (I have a picture of my trial piece if anyone fancies a larf)

And now I have a project - I am going to knit myself a cosy for my cafetiere. There I've said it, can't go back on it now

So what are you all working on? Anyone want to join me in my Knitting Circle?

Pruni, I also want to do little baby socks. I have a nice pattern from the Simply Baby book and I thought they would make nice gifts with a hat for the five babies that are scheduled to arrive in the next 5 months. I have the wool and the needles in advance of the class and I am itching to get started. I am a bit worried that I will be the class dunce though and not able to keep up with everyone else!

I like the sound of felting, sounds like there is room for mistakes didn;t mean knitting the items themselves was boring i jus can't keep making tiny tank tops

What Pruni says, only in my case you do 2 washes at 40 degrees, see it's still a bit loose and big, get impatient, so do another wash at 50 degrees and end up with something with roughly the texture of a brick. That you've now got to sew a zip into. Arrghh.

wtf is intarsia?? and have I?

ok I'm new to it but I'm pretty good at it ...I think its cos I like doing spreadsheets that look like a picture (colouring different boxes) then copying it in knitting ..

so felting .. is it a special type of wool? is it expensive ..

Report
tamum · 10/01/2007 23:05

Intarsia is when you have different colours- you can do fairisle or intarsia as a way of keeping more than one colour going. And yes you did it, you did.

Felting only works with pure wool, or wool/mohair, that kind of thing. Not synthetic fibres, or superwash wool, but it doesn't need to be a special make or anything. Lopi wool is good, and Noro Kureyon, and Jaeger Shetland Aran (discontinued but I have shedloads of it luckily). I like it because it looks professional if it's well done, in a way that knitted bags don't otherwise. I am blethering.

Knitting socks is great - and very easy.

Yes, people do set foot outside the house. I know a mobile hairdresser who wears handknitted socks all the time. She gets lots of compliments from her customers when she has to take her boots/shoes off in their houses.

I am knitting blocks (o.k. squares ) for a blanket. But they are intricate squares and I am trying out lots of different stitches ... I was wondering about felting too.

hmm I think this thread might be a bit fast paced for me

there are people talking into the wee hours of felting and intrasia

well I have a new resolution. I am going to knit something on dpns. I hate knitting on dpns but I need to break that block cos then I can make nauties without seams.

but first I must make some dpns and paint them attractive colours.

How is intarsia different to fairisle? Have done the latter, never heard of the former

(will be in school this morning, teachin the sicth form Gene therapy tamum and have respoted to bits of card!, but will be waiting with baited breath to get the answer on my return!!!!)

Intarsia is good for big blocks of different colours - you pick up and drop the colours, basically, intertwining them at the edges.

With fairisle you work both colours at the same time, holding onto two (or more) strands of yarn at once.

OK, NQC has answered for me! Good luck with the gene therapy....

Aviatrix, dpns are double ended (pointed) needles that you use for knitting in the round where circular needles are too big, so they are used for socks and hats and things. I shared fillyjonk's feelings about them but have learnt to get on with them. Fillyjonk, did I see that you were using your Denises? Have you learnt to love plastic? I was very chuffed the other night when I needed to make an I-cord with 8 mm needles and realised I could use a short Denise set instead of having to buy more dpns

Oh I have just seen this..I will have to knit something then. Not sure what..it will save me from buying laptops, I have bought three this week and it is becoming a disease..I expect to end up with one though and not order any nore perhaps knitting will help me relax and occupy my fingers.

I could go in this shop here any suggestions, I haven't knitted for years and years.

You all sound very industrious

Hi everyone. I'll join if I may.

Don't have anything on the go right now but this might be just the kick up the * I need to get something happening again.

FillyJ - OK I am intrigued - how DO you make your own needles?

anyone got an uber cooltea cosy pattern? I quite fancy knitting one of those (and not constantly having to reheat my tea in the microwave - yeugh - would be good)

tatties, cafetiere cover also sounds good - are you working to a pattern or making it up?

Maybe a laptop cover would be a good idea..or would it get too fluffy? Or too hot?

I would have to line it with some non shreddingmaterial..are there any cotton yarns that would be suitable (or silk?)
