glasgowmandy · 10/06/2010 13:04

exactly! its so so sad and annoys me so much, some of them are really nasty about it! especially my brother and his mates,
what annoys me the most is whenever i have travelled down to england, every single person ive met goes on about how much they love scotland and what a beautiful place it is etc. never heard a nasty remark, yet here we can be quite visious.
is there any need really x

i dont know why either, i havnt met one person here who is.
ill definatley be, i have a lota friends down in england and they are a good team to watch aswell!

i dont care what they say infact, although if i put an england flag out my window where i live i would probably get shot.. thats how disgusting it is. x

I sort of support them as it more fun to watch a team you are close to (more excitement value). So hope they do well and least get through to the later rounds. Don't know if I could support them if they reach the final, can be annoying enough that everyone still bangs on about 1966. Hope I could support them all the way - will have to wait and see. DH will certainly NOT be in anyway which I do find a bit OTT. Know for sure that anyone I know in Scotland will not be supporting them.

LetThereBeRock · 10/06/2010 13:09

I'm a Scot and will be supporting,in the loosest sense of the word as I hate football,Germany.

I always have supported them, not because I'm anti English but I love the country so much, and I've supported them since I was a kid.

I'll be supporting England however in all of their matches, until they come up against Germany.

My dp is English and has no problem with this, but then he hates football too.

I was delighted when England beat the Aussies during the Ashes.

I agree with you in that I don't understand why some Scots, not all of us certainly, gloat so much when England lose a game.

ajandjjmum · 10/06/2010 13:09

They were talking about this on Five Live this morning - many people from Scotland and Wales were supporting anyone playing against England.

Odd really. Some sort of historic hangover causing chips on shoulders maybe?

I think Scotland and Wales are beautiful too.

HairyCanary · 10/06/2010 13:09

I would rather eat my hat than ever support England at any sporting event. Sorry it's just the way I feel and no amount of moaning will make me change my view. I will happily support GB in the Olympics though.

expatinscotland · 10/06/2010 13:10

who cares?

mozette · 10/06/2010 13:12

But if you were a Liverpool supporter, would you support Everton if they got into a Cup Final?

Football is about passion and the Tartan Army are very passionate about Scotland. I can't understand why anyone would "expect" someone from another country (Wales, Scotland, NI) to support England?

glasgowmandy · 10/06/2010 13:13

i know thats the bit i dont get my other half will support anyone that plays against england, even some of the ones ive never heard of lol!! its so tupid i think it is just a chip of the old shoulder.

im not allowed to watch it in my own home if im supporting england! ill support who i dam well want, why is it such an issue?
i know for a fact england would give the scotland team support if it was them.. maybe not all, but i think us scots are far harsher about england than england on us.

i think maybe arrogance?
dont get me wrong im proud to be scottish and love my country but theres some things that are just plain stupid!

we all live on the same grass really dont we x

pagwatch · 10/06/2010 13:13

I think it is a bit sad really because I love the Scots and it just makes them look really petty and childish.

I would always support a home nation side.
I enjoy all the home nation sporting rivalrys - nothing better than beating them when playing them. But against the rest of the world I am proud to support anyone from these Isles.

You would think that being a proud nation they would have a bit more grace and dignity. Its a bit embaressing. I would be embaressed if my Irish relatives were equally chippy

LetThereBeRock · 10/06/2010 13:13

Some people don't think of themselves as British however and I can see why they wouldn't necessarily support England.

GypsyMoth · 10/06/2010 13:13

expat....the op does,hence her post!

OrmRenewed · 10/06/2010 13:14

Agree mozette. DH would cut his bloody arm off before cheering on Chelsea or ManU even if they are playing in Europe. Stupid, no doubt, but there we are. However I do think the taint of nationalism makes it a bit nastier when it's a national team.

Meglet · 10/06/2010 13:16

I'm English but happily cheer on Scotland / Wales / Ireland in sports, if we're not playing against them.

HairyCanary · 10/06/2010 13:16

it's something that English people don't 'get' but most of the other home nations do get. OP is in the minority as she has explained. I like the Liverpool/Everton analogy myself.

Scotland is a strange place re football. We have a load of people supporting Celtic and wearing Ireland strips, a load of people supporting Rangers and wearing England strips and then there is everyone else who supports their local teams and they wear Scotland strips.

needsharesinduracell · 10/06/2010 13:18

Don't get me started, I think it's pathetic. Personally I would always support Scotland and Wales. It would be nice if Scottish and Welsh people could equally support England.

I can understand if people don't want to actively support England, and remain neutral or whatever, that's fine. But those people who actively make a big show of supporting any team England is playing against are so childish. You saw it on telly during the last World Cup - Scottish towns bedecked in the flags of whatever country England was playing against - people had absolutely no connection to whatever country it was, it was purely because they were opposing England.

Utterly pathetic if you ask me.

Janos · 10/06/2010 13:20

Bloody world cup, sooner it's over the better IMO.

People getting (seriously) upset about someone supporting the 'wrong' team need to get a grip of themselves. It's just a game.

EddieIzzardismyhero · 10/06/2010 13:20

This is as old as the hills I'm afraid! All my Scottish friends go with the ABE idea when watching footie (Anyone But England) - although one of them has 'outed' himself as supporting England this time round and has been slated by his Scottish mates!

It's just a bit of harmless fun - and tbh, we always wind them up by pointing out they're just jealous cos they're too crap to even qualify!!

HairyCanary · 10/06/2010 13:20

'utterly pathetic' ROFL

mozette · 10/06/2010 13:21

duracell, I think most of it is banter - we know it winds a lot of people up so, much like a smaller, younger brother, we do it all the more

BessieBoots · 10/06/2010 13:21

Why would I support England? I don't live there. I am more likely to support Argentina- Patagonia has a Welsh community, so I feel a connection. I wouldn't expect anybody to support a team from somewhere except their home.
