I get that not every school is perfect and people have specific and individual issues with this or that. However, every thread on education seems to take it for granted that our system is dreadful. In the 3 big global rankings we are currently placed 4th, 6th, and 16th. We are in the top 10 for all 3 subjects compared by PISA scores. To me that suggests that we actually have a pretty decent system.

We also have 4 of the top 10 universities and are ranked 2nd for research quality in higher education.

Guess your not in Scotland then 😂
Because our gvnmt are failing our kids, badly😭

scoutzx · 20/10/2026 14:14

Parents are failing their children by not parenting. This then makes them unready for school.

I do think far too much teacher time goes on moany parents. The things that people on here seem to expect teachers to solve are wild.

Parents are failing their kids first.

PISA is split between the constituent countries. Scotland is failing badly in comparison to England and is on a sharply downhill trajectory. Sad to see in a country that once had the best education in the world but that’s what happens when you follow ‘inclusion’ policies even when they are harming pretty much every child and teacher, and rewrite the curriculum to dumb it down massively. Gove did an excellent job in England. I’m so jealous!

The stats say they aren't.

Parental perception that anything other than perfection for every single child is an issue. Also parents think a school is failing if their child getting the grades that the parents think they deserve.

I don't believe this is all based on Gove by any means. I will look into the Scottish stats. TBH I don't know much about the different education system there. I just get annoyed by all the doom and gloom when actually, overall, the picture is much better than many seem to realise.

Parents are a child’s first teacher. They are meant to teach their children the basic skills before starting school. This is no longer happening.

YANBU. I don’t see any real difference in schools, I see a difference in the children attending them who are unable to cope with normal day to day life.

My daughter’s primary is a regular state one and has a vegetable patch, forest school, a range of interesting clubs, lovely teachers, they do interesting things. Very kind and supportive.

Problem is the kids need the moon on a stick and ever expanding and more time consuming adjustments to simply set foot over the threshold.

Yes it’s always ‘what are the school doing’ or ‘give the parents more money’ 🫣🫣

TBH I think schools are way better now than when I was there.

I feel like the majority of children are doing well in the school system.

So do I but they get slagged off on here so much I feel quite gaslighted.

We had uniform inspections, Saturday detentions, a no make up rule, more traditional teaching (face the front and listen), there was no real ‘pastoral care’ and everything was from textbooks rather than interesting jazzy screens. Crap food in the canteen and nobody cared if you were having a hard time at home.

You may be right. The scores are different for England v Scotland and Wales. Although each time I hear an SNP politician questioned on how well they are doing they just say well we are voted in.

Completely agree. I’ve been teaching for 25 years and can also recall my own experiences as a child. The current education provision is the best ever.

Periperi2025 · 20/10/2026 14:50

In Wales there has been a pervading sense of 'our way is different' and therefore must be 'better'. Apparently not! Kids are now reading on average two years behind their English counterparts.

Embrace the critism if it means English schools continue to avoid the mess our kids have ended up in over here in Wales.

JuliaAgrippina · 20/10/2026 14:50

School vary hugely with each country as well - the good school with high house prices in catchment is a very different experince to failing one my DC ended up at - started to fail while they were there.

AgeingMillennial · 20/10/2026 14:52

Oh and schools were homophobic and racist and even the teachers would join in with it (early/mid 2000s). They couldn’t have cared less about your feelings and bullying was really common and not something teachers and parents really got involved in.

Bullying and violence is far more common than ever in schools in Scotland due to them getting rid of PRUs which they mistakenly thought were bad for pupils.

Is it? I definitely think they sound more violent toward teachers and in class. When I was at school the violent bullying was saved for out of classes, or on the bus. Now they throw chairs at teachers (!) but they wouldn’t have dared

NorwegianForest · 20/10/2026 14:56

I agree OP. My DC have had a good state school experience.
