I get that not every school is perfect and people have specific and individual issues with this or that. However, every thread on education seems to take it for granted that our system is dreadful. In the 3 big global rankings we are currently placed 4th, 6th, and 16th. We are in the top 10 for all 3 subjects compared by PISA scores. To me that suggests that we actually have a pretty decent system.

We also have 4 of the top 10 universities and are ranked 2nd for research quality in higher education.

What’s to say the qualifications haven’t been dumbed down? That’s why PISA score are vital. They give a 3rd party reflection of a stated education system.

Jesus. You're reaching now 😂😂

I’m not sure why your post got the reaction it did. Yes the scores are useful.

Well England is doing pretty well in PISA scores so that shows something.

But everyone wants to be the priority and are outraged when they’re not
Pensioners
The disabled
Refugees
Children
VAWG

I think future tax contributers are vital to support our needy, therefore education needs to be the no1 priority, surely!

It’d not in Scotland where I live. Worst ever PISA scores have been totally ignored by the vacuous, incompetent erucation minister, the latest in a long line to to ally ignore the ever soaring violence in schools. Things are utterly dire here, yet it is all merrily ignored and brushed under the carpet in a ‘Weesht for Indy’ manner.

Yes I do. 3 state, one private due to the sheer violence that the state school were totally unable to prevent. The difference between a state education and a private education in Scotland is totally and utterly staggering. Classes where the teacher is able to teach without children kicking off should be a basic expectation of secondary. Sadly not our experience at all, at both primary and secondary level. Curriculum that’s totally unfit for purpose. No feed back in state schools on how your child is performing throughout at any stage in schooling - full of wishy-washy meaningless ‘meeting expectations’ nonsense. So many subjects taught to exam level where the barest of knowledge isn’t needed to pass, just the need to lay your answers out in a set way (you don’t even have to read a book to pass higher English these days!). Focus on bringing the weakest learners up while parking the bright kids.

Oh I could go on and on and on and on. What I wouldn’t give for Michael Gove to come and bang some heads together and actually get improvement ms going in Scotland. But no. It’s keeps getting ignored and things keep getting worse…

I have been really fascinated by this recently. There’s a few podcasts and YouTube videos worth watching if it interests you.

Strictly education YouTube -

Shes a bit ranty and it’s long. But I think what she says makes sense and it’s quite balanced if you watch the whole thing (ie, she argues each point from that view - you have to wait until they balance).

And Sold a Story podcast is just mind blowing. It’s about America and there system was particularly bad but I think it touches on the whole ‘children will explore these things and figure it out for themselves mentality’ that is the main reason for the pisa plummet.

Enjoy the videos and music that you love, upload original content and share it all with friends, family and the world on YouTube.

Ah, so you have zero knowledge of the school system in Scotland but "feel" for a stranger on the internet.

Thanks.

Emaraldisland · 21/10/2026 12:59

Surely it depends. My DDs secondary school was rubbish but we did what most parents don't and moved them to a better school where they flourished. There will always be schools that underperform or just don't fit your child but that's why you have the option to change schools.
I love my DSs primary school, the teachers, well all the staff tbh are fantastic. My DS is severely autistic (awaiting a place in a SEN school) and they used a spare classroom to create a class for my DS and 3 others with additional needs. Nothing is too much trouble and I have heard exactly the same from parents who have NT at the school..
I think the biggest issue is a lot of parents don't place any value on education or think their child deserves a gold star just for showing up. Generally it's the parents who are the problem, not the school. The research obviously suggests it's not the education that's the problem.

Yes of course some might play it down for other reasons, are you still using the school system? Or are your dc older?

Given the comment about her u/n it seems her posts get to you. Idk why, party loyalty?

Unfortunately dc are having experiences such as the posts below.

The same people who complain about the education system are the same people whose kids piss around in class.
