After 60 years on this planet I've discovered something monumental about toast!

If you leave it cool for 30 seconds and then put the butter on it tastes better cos the butter doesn't melt and you can actually taste the butter!
It's probably healthier as well cos you need less butter.
Mind blown!

YABU - Toast with melted butter is yummy

YANBU - OMG : Get OP a knighthood for services to toast

I have always done this. If you can’t see teeth marks in the layer of butter, that’s just wrong.

Have to say I pity the OP for having taken so long to realise this.

Justnot · Yesterday 12:46

yes to 2 types of toast - melty is my go to but occasionally like coldish rubbery toast with visible butter

the best toast I’ve ever had was made with Brennans Pan (Irish but I think you can get it over here)

Toast it. Butter it. Toast it again. Thank me later.

I must try this method as I hate soggy toast, but love butter melted into it. The toast must always crunch with every bite.

PistachioTiramisu · Yesterday 12:46

I can't bear the butter melted into the toast! I have hot toast and butter each piece before eating with butter straight from the fridge, so I get hot toast and cold unsalted butter! Perfect!

Funnywonder · Yesterday 12:48

When I was a child I liked cooled down burnt toast (and I mean black) with the butter very much visible as a layer on top. I was a strange child😆 And yes, I know it was probably carcinogenic or something.

OriginalUsername2 · Yesterday 12:49

I quite like it like that too. Not all the time, they’re two different experiences. Melty toast and crunchy toast.

Ophy83 · Yesterday 12:50

This would be too much in the morning, but is perfect on a Sunday evening... cold buttered toast with anchovies on

Abouteffingtime · Yesterday 12:51

Yabvvvvu. If i get interupted mid toast makibg, and it cools, i have to make new toast.

Bitsostuff · Yesterday 12:53

Oops, wrong thread.

Justnot · Yesterday 12:54

And don’t get me started on butter - the only way to keep butter in tip top condition is wrapped in its packaging in the fridge - none of this leaving it on the side nonsense

SnowflakeSmasher86 · Yesterday 12:54

I’m with Nigella on this. Double buttered right up to the edges. With proper butter 😋

I have 2 types of toast I make dependent on my mood… hot melty butter toast buttered copiously straight from toaster OR cold toast with thick cold butter on, I wait for it to go completely cold so like a good minute before buttering and I stand it up to cool so it doesn’t get soggy from condensation… maybe I think about my toast too much 😂

You need an old fashioned toast rack.

Sgtmajormummy · Yesterday 12:56

I make industrial white bread into Melba Toast, the perfect vehicle for loads of butter!
Do one slice normally, splice it into two thinner slices and toast it back to back for a shorter time. Also good with bitter marmalade or pâté.

blackrabbitwhiterabbit · Yesterday 12:56

No thanks!

Sgtmajormummy · Yesterday 12:58

Black toast does you no harm, some people use it to curb acid reflux.

ChocolateApples · Yesterday 12:59

No, no, no. Toast needs to be hot and the butter needs to melt. It's why I prefer to make my own at hotels, family breakfast etc, so that I can make it just when I want it.

WestwardHo1 · Yesterday 12:12

Good God no. What are you, a savage?

Haha I’m with you. We had cold toast in toast racks at school.

Kokonimater · Yesterday 13:05

My mouth is watering. I’m off to the toaster …

cartagenagina · Yesterday 13:09

I hate it when the butter melts in and it’s a nasty smeggy mess. Much prefer the cold butter on top method.

Apparently Nigella butters the hot toast, waits for it to melt and cool, and then butters it again.

I was going to say that I do the same, but only to eat it standing in the kitchen, obviously.

DiscombobulatedHedgehog · Yesterday 13:10

In my opinion the very best toast, for high days and holidays, is done under the grill - toast one side, turn, butter the uncooked side, toast that side so butter melts in, remove from grill and butter again. Have the lid off the jam/butter/knife ready so that it can be kept as hot as possible.

The next best is done on a toasting fork on a fire.

Cold toast, aka Punishment Food, is eaten under suffrance in hotels.

Best spread is blackcurrant jam, sloe jelly or a dark, thick cut marmalade.

Me too, but I'm going to have crumpets. In the interests of this discussion, I shall try one with the leaving to get cold before buttering and the other where the butter melts in. I shall report back.

MyballsareSandy2015 · Yesterday 13:15

I remember Saturday mornings in the 1970s, my brother and I would demolish an entire loaf, toasted and smothered in butter, whilst watching Sat morning tv.

we were both very skinny! How! Imagine doing that now 😳🤣

Crumpets have to be cooked really well and served hot so the butter leaves a puddle on the plate.
Toast is best left to cool as I can't bear hot toast with melted butter that has gone cold by the time I get back to bed to eat it.
