If you leave it cool for 30 seconds and then put the butter on it tastes better cos the butter doesn't melt and you can actually taste the butter!
It's probably healthier as well cos you need less butter.
Mind blown!

Another for cold toast and butter 😋

SpiderInMyShoe · 11/10/2026 07:10

I adore cold toast and butter. I live in a warm climate though so it can take time for my toast to reach appropriate spreading temperature. To speed things up, I sometimes pop my fresh slices of toast into the freezer for a minute or so. After a minute, I pull the toast out of the freezer and proceed with the liberal application of butter.

Apparently Nigella butters the hot toast, waits for it to melt and cool, and then butters it again.

Of course she does 😅 🙌

Try eating the toast upside down so the butter hits your tongue... it's a winner

That’s how you are meant to eat a chocolate digestive apparently.

I have 2 types of toast I make dependent on my mood… hot melty butter toast buttered copiously straight from toaster OR cold toast with thick cold butter on, I wait for it to go completely cold so like a good minute before buttering and I stand it up to cool so it doesn’t get soggy from condensation… maybe I think about my toast too much 😂

I like cold toast with cold butter and marmite. Sometimes I put it in a brown paper bag and eat it in the park. I eat it slowly because it is marvellous.

You can never think too much about toast! Never mind about hot or warm, what about burnt or well done?

EstherGreenwood63 · 11/10/2026 18:57

THIS is the kind of thread that makes this site worth using. I am going to cool my toast first tomorrow and see how...

She is a toast Goddess!

I’ve always been team cold toast before butter. I also prop it up to make sure it is nice and crunchy and not steamy.
mmmmmm delightful. Hotel toast is my fave for this reason.

BasilParsley · 11/10/2026 19:06

I have recently learned the BEST way to deal with butter and toast.

Basically pop a slice of homemade (or proper baker's) white bread in the toaster so it goes lightly brown rather than burnt (the mass-produced tasteless supermarket white sliced bread is useless in this case).

Once it's toasted, while you're waiting for it to cool, either fry an egg or heat up some baked beans (on the hob, not the microwave!) to serve up on top. Once the egg/beans are ready, spread full-fat butter on the toast then top it with the egg or beans...

The butter then gently melts adding a generous touch of tasty luxury to the egg or the beans. Nectar from above!

I'm 63 and I've known this for years!

Gatekeeper · 11/10/2026 19:18

Ilike my toast cold as well, with some marmalade on or butter but not both. Also cut into triangles. Lovely!

LittleMonks11 · 11/10/2026 19:19

My grandad taught me to place my toast in a pyramid to cool before putting inch thick proper butter on.

There's something exquisite about triangular toast.😋

Withxtime · 11/10/2026 19:54

I dont know about toast, but after 40 years on the planet im ready to get off it.

Jaxhog · 11/10/2026 21:01

I so agree with you! I like my toast to be crispy, otherwise its just.... warm bread. If you butter it too soon it just goes soggy. Yuck.

YANBU, and this also applies to crumpets. Leave them to cool a little before buttering, they’re so much nicer.

I think you are really me…. I love very cold toast with very cold thick butter and marmite .

WhatMyNameis · 12/10/2026 11:53

Hot toast, so much better it doesn't stand a chance of all melting, sprinkle of salt 😍

Didimum · 12/10/2026 11:57

Can't stand cooled toast. The hotter the better.

longtompot · 12/10/2026 12:07

I leave my toast to go pretty much cold before spreading the butter on. I hate soggy toast even though I used to love hot butted toast. I find I use much less butter too, so in a way healthier for me ☺️

mamamamamamamamamamachameleon · 12/10/2026 12:37

Yup, I've always called this "hotel toast" to myself as it comes in a toast rack already slightly cooled and somehow always tastes better!

Yogafiend · 12/10/2026 12:39

@UserName00747 - I voted YABU because the thought of eating butter that isn’t melted is utterly vile to me. Having said that people should be able to eat how they like it so congratulations on your discovery 😁

Ginburee · 12/10/2026 17:49

I have always had cold toast.

DeftGoldHedgehog · 12/10/2026 17:55

When my dad wasn't eating very much at the end of his life, he did fancy a bit of toast sometimes. But particularly as he was finding everything a bit unpalatable and dry, he insisted that I should spread the butter right up to the edge/corners, not missing any bit of toast surface. I was probably rather blasé about my butter-spreading before then. Nowadays, six years after he died, I still think of him whenever I butter toast. Properly!
