Loudly complaining about smell in public loo

Okokokokoh · Today 17:01

Suddenly needed to use the toilet (ibs) in M&S, a lady walked in and kept saying. "Oh god it stinks in here!" Over and over again to everyone in the queue.
aibu or is that a bit mean!? It's a toilet after all. I ended up having to stay in the cubicle for ages because then i was too embarrassed to walk out after she'd been telling everyone over and over again that it stinks.
i did flush multiple times to try and avoid too much smell but I'm not sure what else I could have done.

This is a real lark for me, IBS is a first world problem. For a start western diets are correlated with bowel problems, and bowel disease. As a matter of fact it is particularly related to Northern Europe and especially scotland. Lack of vegetables in peoples diet are a significant factor and eating too much red processed meat

so sort out your diets folks and stop inflicting your bowel problems on us.

You seem incredibly fragile. Have you lived a sheltered life or are you just generally not very resilient?

TowerRavenSeven · Today 21:14

I do not have IBS and I’ve been in awful smelling public bathrooms. I carry one of those travel size very strong smelling body sprays. I take the cap off and sniff the inner lid, so I’m not spraying it around. I also carry hand sanitizer in case I have to dash out before washing my hands because of the smell! I have gagged before, I can’t help it. But neither can these people help it, and that woman was very rude! I might think it but I’d never make someone feel bad about it.

You have literally no idea what you’re talking about.

My Ibs is most likely linked to the many medications I take for my chronic autoimmune issues that I’ve had most of my life. Diet makes no difference whatsoever. I’m 46 now and tried almost every single thing n anyone can suggest since I was about 19. It is hell to live with and you are very ignorant.

CheeseWisely · Today 21:20

YANBU OP. Our work toilets are outside our office so occasionally used by visiting members of the public or people from other offices in the building. I remember one of the accounts team coming back into the office and announcing at the top of her voice ‘the toilet stinks, the people from upstairs must have been using it again’ as if everybody in OUR office produces only rose scented shit. If it was someone from our office that had been in there beforehand they must have been mortified.

Absolutely no need to mention it at all, assuming the toilet was left clean and tidy (in which case facilities would go address it).

mybiggreenfrog · Today 21:24

You can get drops to go down the loo to ease the smell. They do work.

I have no idea how you have arrived at the fragile conclusion. I am a very healthy fit and resilient person who has got very bored with other people who Spend their life identifying with a self inflicted disability, complaining here

Your attitude is the only gross thing here. Disgraceful.

Why? A few other posters have said IBS is a disability and the IBS smell is really unpleasant. Therefore the disabled loo is entirely appropriate surely?

Most people won’t need to take a dump when out and about. It’s a once or twice a day event. It’s polite not to stink up a public toilet. In the same way it’s polite to wash and use deodorant.

Abouteffingtime · Today 21:42

We get this all the time at work, people loudly proclaiming "urgh someones poo'd in the toilet" well yes. Where else would they do it??

Vegetarians eat lots of fibre and we can poo five times plus a day.

JustPassingThyme · Today 21:44

If someone only has IBS then they don't NEED the extra space or adaptations in the disabled toilets. Someone in a wheelchair for example, literally can not use the normal toilets, they don't have another option. They do NEED the extra space or adaptations in the disabled toilets. They may also have IBS so could soil themselves waiting for someone who can use another toilet to finish using the disabled toilet.

Spaniels4Eva · Today 21:48

When I worked as a carer, the first few times I had to change a pad on a bed bound patient I was almost gagging but the other carers said always carry a Vicks nasal stick in your pocket.... take a good snort in and it completely renders you unable to smell anything for a short period of times. It was a lifeline when someone had C Diff.... I still always have one in my bag, and it comes in very handy for public toilets.

And it's far kinder than spraying some noxious smell over the stinky shit so it's a double whammy.

batmata · Today 21:50

I have IBS. I would recognise the smell anywhere lol. TBH I wouldn’t say a damn thing. I’d go to the toilet and that’s it. If u said anything (and wouldn’t expect u to), I’d just say “don’t apologise. It’s normal. I have IBS anyway”… or something similar.

Public toilets are for shitting in. Shit stinks. Yours does.

IBS can be disabling in terms of the urgency etc. Not the smell. Smelly faeces is not a disability. Maybe being a twat about other people's is though.

Because you can’t cope with a bad smell for five minutes?

OchreReader · Today 22:13

It happened to me in Tesco. I had to abandon my trolley and move to the toilets at speed. There were two young teenage girls mucking around at the washbasins, but truth be told I wouldn’t have cared if His Majesty was in it. I was just so glad to have made it!

Like a pp said, I would have no qualms about coming out and telling the old cow that I had ibs and apologised for the smell. It’s not your fault OP. You were caught short due to a medical condition. If I had been in the next cubicle when I was on chemo she’d really have had something to complain about! The paint would have been peeling from the walls 😂

The atrocious attitude here is that of those who make a big song and dance about the smells in toilets... a place where people shit and make smells.

Vicks under your nostrils works wonders. Do that instead of expecting people with IBS to stay at home.

DidChandlerGoToYemen · Today 22:22

Hedgehogforshort · Today 20:33

some one else’s poo smell is just grim. People who have IBS or eat too much meat or both should stay at home until their bowels are clear.

Or at the very least try and use products to save us all from the misery of their personal smells.

Who do you think you are ordering people to stay at home? You do realise IBS flares can come on with no warning, right? No, thought not. Because you don't know anything about IBS, do you. Do you think people who have it actually like having to use public toilets knowing there are judgemental people like you around?

I feel for you OP.
I have cancer and need to take strong opioid based pain relief, which bungs you up. As such, I then need to take laxatives to keep me “ regular”Sometimes I’ve been caught short when shopping and have needed to run for the loo. The looks on some peoples faces, says it all. Now, I carry a spray with me at all times, including when at my cancer hospital!
