Loudly complaining about smell in public loo

Suddenly needed to use the toilet (ibs) in M&S, a lady walked in and kept saying. "Oh god it stinks in here!" Over and over again to everyone in the queue.
aibu or is that a bit mean!? It's a toilet after all. I ended up having to stay in the cubicle for ages because then i was too embarrassed to walk out after she'd been telling everyone over and over again that it stinks.
i did flush multiple times to try and avoid too much smell but I'm not sure what else I could have done.

Our local M & S loos smell vile, unwashed arse and BV. Would welcome smell of poo instead 🤣

I’m not sure carrying vi poo or similar air fresheners is that helpful though. The smell will still be there before you flush. I find the overwhelming smell of poo and air freshener sometimes worse too.

Bowel movements can smell significantly worse though with IBS though. I am not suggesting it's mandatory, but the OP admitted that she felt embarrassed and needed to stay in the loo. Keeping something to hand could help.

Where else does she expect people to shit; isle 5 with the canned goods?!

She should but OP was embarrassed someone commented on it, she can’t control what other people say but it is within her control to take steps to minimise the smell if that would help her feel more comfortable in similar situations going forward.

Op, carry a mini tester of perfume everywhere, flush as much as possible, and mini packet of wet wipes can minimise smell.

My mother had digestives issues and had multiple experiences like this. It used to upset her.

DGM had a bad stomach and was in the loo in M&S about 3 years ago and this exact thing happened. I was at the sink at the time so loudly said "ahh yes, well, if you can't make a stink in the shithouse where can you?" which shut her up pretty quickly. These women policing bodily functions are a nightmare.

Should have strolled out and breezily said "give it 20 mins"

No one is policing bodily functions but with public facilities if you have a condition that makes bowel motions toxic try some of those drops that have been mentioned a fair few times.

How rude of her. Nobody enjoys using a stinky public loo, but you don’t make a huge deal of it. I just stick my nose into my top.

Oh god, I know how you feel. I was on a ferry and we were about to depart when I URGENTLY needed the loo. I rushed in and there was a bit of a wait, I was holding it in really tight but knew I didn't have long. Anyway, got in the cubicle, had to just let it all go quite literally, yes it stank really bad (it's not always like this!), and as it was a ferry, it wasn't a typical toilet, it was one of those ones without water and it vacuum sucks it down. Well, I did 'flush' a few times and waited a while to hope the smell would clear a bit.

I came out, and a woman was waiting and went straight in after me, I died of embarrassment BUT what made it awful was that she loudly had to tell everyone who had just seen me come out and was currently there washing my hands about how awful the toilet smelt.

I was so humiliated and also quite cross with her for being such a nasty cow.

A child is fine - as a parent I’d just explain that the person probably has an upset tummy. Poor them etc etc. Hopefully they’ll grow up having some empathy.

Everyone has had an upset stomach at some point - imagine having that every day and the unpredictability of never knowing when it was going to suddenly strike with very little warning. That’s the reality for people with bowel issues.

I have no idea, but I know it’s not used in many public loos nowadays, hence the often underlying odours.

All the posters saying OP and people with similar conditions - like me, I've had IBD for many years - should carry sprays to make it better. Do we expect other people with disabilities or chronic conditions to have to make it better for those around them? Should autistic people try to minimise their meltdowns so as not to disturb others? Should partially sighted people apologise for not seeing things properly? You get the idea. My impression is that generally disabled people don't have to apologise or make reparations for these things. Evidently if it's to do with shit, that's different.
