Loudly complaining about smell in public loo

Okokokokoh · Today 17:01

Suddenly needed to use the toilet (ibs) in M&S, a lady walked in and kept saying. "Oh god it stinks in here!" Over and over again to everyone in the queue.
aibu or is that a bit mean!? It's a toilet after all. I ended up having to stay in the cubicle for ages because then i was too embarrassed to walk out after she'd been telling everyone over and over again that it stinks.
i did flush multiple times to try and avoid too much smell but I'm not sure what else I could have done.

If people think those with IBS should use the disabled loos....does that mean that IBS can be considered a disability for PIP purposes?

Jimmyjumpy · Today 19:09

I went into m and s last week and I kid you not but there was poo literally smeared all over the toilet seat. I had to say to next uder that it wasnt me.

Because they are clean so everyone heads to them as first choice!

In our town, it’s more that there are very few toilets left apart from the ones in M&S!

It's one of my biggest bugbears: toilets with no ventilation, even in new buildings. There's nowhere for normal body function odours to go, drives me mad!

Exactly. Anyone in their right mind will open a damned window if they can.

PIP is not about diagnosis. You knew that though.

PIP isn’t based on any diagnosis as such, it’s about how the condition affects you. So pretty severe IBS that impacts the quality of your life, yes potentially.

What a cow she is, and sorry she made you feel that way. My partner has Crohns so I'm well used to this sort of stupid ignorant comment.

XenoBitch · Today 19:16

Maybe she let out a stinky fart, and was trying to blame the smell in the loo 😂

Some people have to make a drama out of anything though. Sounds like she was one of those types.

I've actually read a post on a different forum where a person was suggesting that people shouldn't poo in a public loo and why can't they hang on until they get home.

I only just held my tongue! Some of us have no choice.

It's a toilet. It's what it's for.

I can only dream of being able to hang on till I got home.

Bikergran · Today 19:28

The M&S toilets in central Sheffield stink. Maybe because there are so few these days they get overused.

BillieWiper · Today 19:36

If it really did stink to the point where it seemed like backed up drains, a blockage/ventilation issue I can kind of see people reacting. But only if it was overwhelming, really they should try and be more subtle as it is natural. I wouldn't take it that they meant it was being caused by me personally.

Functional toilets shouldn't really stink strongly for long. So maybe they were more being annoyed at the facilities management rather than any one specific arse.

Bigcat25 · Today 19:42

I hate it when people say the same thing over and over, it's dumb and annoying. Yes she was rude.

MrsMouse03 · Today 19:43

This happened to me too in M&S, a women said to her friend “ooh you just wouldn’t would you”. I was so embarrassed but what option do you have if you need to go .

abracadabra1980 · Today 19:44

She sounds really immature. Carry some VIPoo with you-you spray before you go. The lemon is a nice one.

Ponderingwindow · Today 19:47

Please don’t use that awful poo spray in public spaces. It can trigger asthma attacks and allergic reactions.

supersuppers · Today 19:52

Same thing happened to me while I was having a miscarriage.

XenoBitch · Today 19:54

I take it by the amount of comments about M&S loos, that they are particularly smelly then?
The loos in my local Tesco are vile. You can smell them in the nearby aisles and also in part of the cafe.

sweetsadine · Today 19:56

She was really rude to say anything but I don't see the issue with suggesting a quick spray of VIpoo or whatever it's called. It's not an air freshener, it seals in the stink. If this is something likely to happen more than once it makes sense. Person feels less mortified and other toilet users aren't having to inhale it.

It's a common occurrence! I went into supermarket loos for a quick wee and was repelled at the doorway the smell was toxic. I made the decision to risk wetting myself (I didn't you'll be pleased to know) than subject myself to that.

Well if a smell put you off having a wee then you couldn’t have been that desperate could you?

“repelled at the doorway” - fetch Madams fainting couch Carruthers, she’s been offended by an odour again.

Look into special sprays for this situation and use them. Yes, she was rude but you know in advance you might have to use a public toilet for this, so come prepared.

Somethinggg · Today 20:12

Shit smells, who knew.

DobbyTheHouseElk · Today 20:19

M&S loos do seem to have a lack of ventilation. Our local store has really smelly loos, not poo, but general smell. I’m not sure how well they are cleaned. A good clean and better ventilation would make a huge difference and be less embarrassing for people who have to use them urgently with stoma bags, IBS etc.

SpookyHalloweenDeviledEggs · Today 20:20

Yes announce the fact you've just had a natural function with a spray of something like a smoke flare.

IHaveQuestionsLotsOfQuestions · Today 20:24

This is so horrible for you. I also have IBS and have been in similar situations. I think if you're lucky enough not to have bowel issues, it's impossible to understand how you don't really have a choice about when you go. You just need to go right then and there! To my utter mortification I have had a couple of accidents over the years because I just couldn't get to a loo in time (brings a whole new meaning to school runs!) It's honestly so embarrassing, anxiety-inducing and debilitating. It can ruin your life if you don't have a really resilient outlook and a high tolerance for embarrassment. I really feel for you - that must have made an already unpleasant experience so much worse in the moment.

What on earth are toilets for if not for performing natural bodily functions? Nobody has any control over how much their shit smells. The woman was an immature, attention seeking idiot.

On a tangent, I think public toilets in the UK are shockingly inadequate. They are so far and few between and the ones there are are often in a poor state. It means that people with conditions like IBS are limited in how they can go out and about. There are certain outdoor recreational spaces near me that I just can't risk going to because there are no loos nearby.

So gross you should go in the disabled and not subject everybody to it

Fuck off, why should the disabled folks suffer extra use of an already limited facility to just save your poor noses?!

People using the accessible facilities should be disabled, and/or in need of a specific feature, like a baby change if one has been influriatingly jammed in there (and they are NEVER designed with disabled parents in mind either!) - not to avoid rude people being offensive about normal bodily functions.
