Loudly complaining about smell in public loo

Suddenly needed to use the toilet (ibs) in M&S, a lady walked in and kept saying. "Oh god it stinks in here!" Over and over again to everyone in the queue.
aibu or is that a bit mean!? It's a toilet after all. I ended up having to stay in the cubicle for ages because then i was too embarrassed to walk out after she'd been telling everyone over and over again that it stinks.
i did flush multiple times to try and avoid too much smell but I'm not sure what else I could have done.

Toilets are there so people can shit and pee in them. That is their literal function. Shit does not smell nice. I remember having this discussion with some pearl clutcher years ago - why can't they just hold it?! I don't poo in public?!

I responded, why can't you just hold it? Go home and use the toilet there.

Oh but wait, it's different when it's their physical needs/wants.

Was a bit thoughtless to complain but i also think if you know this might happen, you probably should carry a toilet bowl spray that will help reduce the impact on everyone else too. It's a public toilet but that doesn't mean everyone needs to endure the stench.
reading this has made me go on Amazon and order a multipack of sprays for the household.

The point is, a public toilet is a shared space. I it's not unreasonable to expect people to leave loos in a useable state for the next person. I'm not expecting toilets to smell great. However if people can't breathe properly because of the smell then that's anti social.

As a sufferer from bowel disease (Crohn's) diagnosed in my mid twenties I was so embarrassed and carried these products but to be honest noone can really understand the urgency and it doesn't really work that you can take the time to find the bottle and spray.

As time has gone I do the same as OP stay inside to let some time go and do an extra flush if it is really bad and I f there are several cubicles. Or if not, because I don't want to hold up the line I have to meekly walk out.

Shit smells and actually I've never experienced anyone commenting on it. I myself have walked into quite the "note" in the cubicle following someone else but I've just opened my mouth to breath through and got on with business.

I struggled to understand your narrative somewhat but anyway you all seem to go on about what your shit does or does not smell like. And seemingly i have hit the nail on the head.with regard to fat people, but having said that slimmer people can have poor diets too.

Of course not, but alternately, there's also no rule that people can't have bowel movements in them. Some people may choose to try to refrain from doing so, but that doesn't mean everyone has to.

And sometimes people are in situations where they have no choice but to take a bowel movement in a public toilet. I'd try to avoid it if I could, but sometimes, if you've really got to go, you've really got to go.

Many people have been telling you that they have bowel issues because they have a diagnosed health problem... nothing to do with obesity. And you are saying they should stay at home.

Why does that matter? Having a bowel movement in a public toilet is not forbidden. If people need to do go, then they need to go.

Sometimes people have no choice but to expel their bowels ASAP and have to dash to nearest available toilet, which may be a public one. Diarrhoea can come on very suddenly.

This is a remarkably dimwitted comment. A toilet is not unusable because it's used for its purpose - which is shitting and pissing. If you can stop yourself from shitting, good for you.

Go home and use the toilet there.

I do (disease) and have had to deal with it for 2 decades. The thought that a woman would have some sort of issue with a smell in a private setting which has been designed for me to go to toilet in is beyond me?!

I was extremely embarrassed in my early years having to rush to a toilet (make it).

It's sad as your comments are an embarrassment to you not understanding. Nowadays I do what I said above.

The more you post, the more I find myself hoping you're struck down by some kind of bowel disorder yourself some day.

The woman making the comment was awful. I worked with a woman like that. I had undiagnosed coeliac disease and she’d comment all the time. She kept repeating that people should hold it in and not use a work toilet. When you’re going ten times in the day there’s really no choice.

IBS is painful enough. I hope you’re feeling better now and the flare up is calming down.
