AIBU to feel hurt my husband will not visit my gallery display?

my Art is being displayed for the first time in a gallery which is 2.5hrs drive away. My husband says it’s too far to go and it’s not his thing anyway. AIBU to be upset by his lack of support? If it was the other way round I’d be excited to go and see it. He says it’s my hobby not his.

Is he jealous, trying to keep you in your box ?

Namenamchange · Today 12:16

Wow he’s an arsehole, bet it’s not the first time he’s let you down.

Lookatmelookatmedontevenlookatme · Today 12:18

First of all, congratulations, what an amazing achievement.

If it’s a once in a blue moon thing then yes, it would be nice for him to support you. But he is right you know, it’s your hobby not his, he might not like your art, and that’s fair enough too.

Is it the fact that art galleries are out of his comfort zone? Will there be someone there for him to talk to while you’re mingling?

Or do you think there’s something else going on? Does he resent the time you spend on your hobby, is he jealous of your success?

Miserable git

GhostEed · Today 12:19

He’s a selfish, unsupportive douche.

DoloresDelEriba · Today 12:20

How nasty of him. How’s your marriage otherwise?

pikkumyy77 · Today 12:20

Just move 2.5 hours away. He’s not worth keeping as a husband and he won’t bother to follow you. What an arse!

Stompythedinosaur · Today 12:20

That's pretty inexcusable, really!

What a fantastic achievement!

Millytante · Today 12:27

Can you clarify the ambiguity in the first sentence? Your work is being displayed for the first time, or for the first time in that gallery?

Either way he’s being a bloody misery, and one would hope a husband and wife would be each other’s greatest champions (hollow laughs from the back row)

Mind you there are hobbies, and then there are ‘hobbies’.
Wasn't there recently a thread in which the poor OP was expected to sit, mute and slumped all day long, in a small room while her lord and master vanquished dragons/aliens/ mediaeval peasants etc in some never-ending online game? Feck that for a game of soldiers.

maras2 · Today 12:27

What a pig.
Congratulations on your exhibition. Flowers Wine Flowers

NewAquaHare · Today 12:28

Yes, a one off and it’s only on display for 3 months. I missed the opening night sadly so this is purely to go and see it in situ - no mingling, a quick pop in to a small gallery to see my art and the others that were chosen to be displayed.

I would get it if it was a ‘normal’ thing for me but this might not happen again, so I just expected he’d be excited for me. I keep questioning whether I’m being too sensitive about it but it’s really upset me.

Yes indeed! Brilliant recognition.

Hang on. So he’s an arse for not supporting her hobby but a man with the wrong kind of hobby wanting support is also an arse?

NewAquaHare · Today 12:30

Not great tbh, so maybe this is a strong sign that it’s even worse than I though judging from some of the replies :(

I get it op, and I think you’re right to expect him to come. If I were him I would do

and, I have a hobby which my partner never comes to. That does make me a bit sad sometimes

HoldMyWine · Today 12:31

Well done to you OP. Your husband is out of order, he should be proud of you and of course he should go with you. What an arse.

Why are you married?

It is very hard to see that anything other than a lack of love.

I went to DH's martial arts tournaments even though I hate watching him being hit (it's rare - he's good!). I just close my eyes for that bit. Because I love him and it's a huge achievement.

Yours is a bit of a shit. Pattern?

Lengokengo · Today 12:33

Has he been supportive before? I was performing recently and DH didn’t come , but he had been to other performances over the years. It’s not really his thing. It stings a bit that he would rather do something else, but so be it.

Celebrating a one off achievement is different to turning up all the time for everything.

Although I played D&D for years so I am that nerd.

PrizedPickledPopcorn · Today 12:35

Is it a single piece? There’s no way DH would go 2.5 hours to see a painting he has already seen, hanging in a different place. And that’s how he’d see the situation.

You would need to explain the situation really well before he would agree to go. At which point I’d have lost interest in him coming anyway!

RealEagle · Today 12:35

Even though it’s not his thing he should be proud of you and go and see it.
Hes a selfish knob.

Don’t say it’ll not happen again! Surely you will continue with your painting?

I’m very, very sorry you hadn’t your DH cheering you on, and had to do this feeling a bit hollow. Elation was the feeling you merited.
But use that emotion now in a series of expressive works that’ll blow another gallerist’s jazzy socks off!
No looking at your shell-likes and thinking 🔪 !

Purplecatshopaholic · Today 12:35

Well done you, that’s amazing. He’s a dick btw, maybe time to reflect on your relationship if this is not the first time…?

First time ever, and possibly won’t happen again. I wouldn’t expect him to always be there for every little thing, but this felt big for me, and very likely a one off
