Was I wrong to refuse DP a lift meaning he had a £90 taxi?

DP got the train to a nearby city with friends yesterday (a day drinking basically).

He was expecting to get the last train back at 10.30pm. Shortly after this, he called me to say he’d been told to leave the platform by the police. Reason being that he thought it would be a good idea to try to wind up his friends getting a train on the opposite platform by dropping his shorts/boxers and bending over in their direction. This was spotted by police who told him to leave the station or he’d be arrested.

I told him no. It was late, a 45 minute drive each way including the motorway. He got a taxi but is off with me as it cost £90 and he said he’d have picked me up in the same circumstances.

We help each other with lifts usually, have a good relationship and no issues etc.

Was I wrong to have refused?

No. It's his fault he couldn't get the train home, and you had valid reasons - time and safety - for refusing.

SchnitzelAgain · 16/08/2026 12:52

I’m not going to vote because I can see both arguments but I would have picked up my husband because he was very drunk and therefore vulnerable.

NotMajorTom · 16/08/2026 12:52

I was going to say you were, but having read why he needed a lift I think it serves him right

Coronaperona · 16/08/2026 12:53

I would have left him to it.

perhaps he will think of the £90 the next time he is thinking of being a dickhead.

BatshitIsTheOnlyExplanation · 16/08/2026 12:53

If he really did drop his pants in a public place, he deserves worse consequences than a £90 taxi

MiceSpiders · 16/08/2026 12:53

10:30 isn't that late, if he'd never done anything like that before I probably would have although I'd be expecting him to feel very embarrassed, a huge thank you and maybe brunch today. If he does stuff like this all of the time no I wouldn't but I also wouldn't be with someone who repeatedly behaves like a child

craigth162 · 16/08/2026 12:53

Nope his own stupid fault. If train had been cancelled etc I'd have gone to get him but not for this reason

TFImBackIn · 16/08/2026 12:53

If that was purely his money then I'd let him get a taxi. If you share money, I'd go to get him and yell at him for the 45 minute return journey!

Diamondsareforever72 · 16/08/2026 12:53

I’d have picked him up rather than having him pay £90.
Ok, he was a twat but I’d still have picked him up.
There is no way I’d want my DH spending 90 quid on a taxi when I could easily pick him up.

JesseDavisGonnaHangOnInThereNSoul · 16/08/2026 12:55

Lucky he wasn't lifted..idiot.

On second thoughts, this.

Loulou4022 · 16/08/2026 12:55

If the last train had been cancelled then I absolutely would have gone and got him. In this instance he was thrown off the platform for stupid behaviour so it serves him right and hopefully the £90 taxi will mean he won’t do anything so stupid again!!

Stressybetty · 16/08/2026 12:55

I'd have told him he was an idiot but still gone and got him

Hayleylulljah · 16/08/2026 12:56

I’d have gone tbh but what a Stupid thing to do. I’d prob find than an incurable ick if that’s typical of his behaviour.

Bethsvint · 16/08/2026 12:57

He didn’t used shared money, it was his own. He was drunk but I’d argue that he was vulnerable, he’s in his 30’s and able to look after himself.

pastadish · 16/08/2026 12:57

I would have picked him up although my dh would have just got a taxi without asking me for a lift as he wouldn’t want me driving that late. It’s not like he did it on purpose, it was stupid and he should have know better but doesn’t seem malicious

Dontlletmedownbruce · 16/08/2026 12:58

It really does depend as PP say if its a regular thing or not. The silly childish drunk behaviour, I mean. If you were off your head vomiting or starting a stupid argument and were left stranded would he come collect you? I would hope so if it had never happened before. If it was a regular Saturday night for you then I guess it would be ok to leave you there.

nc42day · 16/08/2026 12:58

He missed his train because he pulled his pants down in the train station and got sent out by the police.

I think I'd have stayed on the sofa too. Play silly games, get £90 taxi fare prizes.

Is there a typo/missing word here and you actually meant to write that he was NOT vulnerable?

Sparrowsandbudgies · 16/08/2026 12:59

What an absolute idiot!! 😳🤦🏻‍♀️ He deserves to pay the £90 for being such a twit!

WallaceinAnderland · 16/08/2026 12:59

If you picked him up then he has no consequences and would probably do it again. You would be enabling stupid behaviour. This way he hopefully won't do it again.

Yes, my point was that he was not vulnerable. A busy station with a taxi rank outside so he got in one as soon as we’d finished talking.

I wouldn’t have picked him up. His own stupid fault for behaving like a stupid teenager.

Christ, who can be bothered to yell for 45 minutes at nearly midnight. I’d have done as OP did and stayed comfortable in my bed and let him learn an expensive lesson

musicforthesoul · 16/08/2026 13:01

I'd have picked him up if his last train was cancelled but would have definitely left him to sort himself out in those circumstances!
