Unnecessary comment about my outfit from male member of staff at the school - your thoughts?

I live a stones throw from a secondary school which I have to pass daily on our school run.

A male member of staff stands outside in the morning greeting the kids.

A few months ago he made a comment to me as I walked past him. It was a stupid remark, nothing vulgar or massively offensive, but it has bothered me to the extent I'm now self conscious about what I'm wearing whenever I have to go past him.

The comment he made was "morning Blade" in a mocking tone, both infront of the secondary school kids and my own.

(for reference I was wearing a belted leather trench coat and some black riding style boots)

It wasn't a friendly jibe, he was being a twat. I wouldn't give it much thought if he were a random in the street but he's stood there representing the school 😐

Would you have raised it with the school or not? Do you think it was inappropriate?

@CoffeeCantatawear the clothes! That’s what I love about growing up in London, fashion & individuality is enjoyed.

Greentea4 · 03/08/2026 13:12

I would have laughed at his dry sense of humour and then forgotten about it..

Yes - you're right!

In fact, I do up to a point. My circle of friends are probably fairly conservative (I don't mean frumpy or dowdy - but they tend to be jeans and t-shirt or a shift dress people, and they look good, but the clothes themselves aren't interesting). I do like a strong single colour such as teal, petrol, mustard, aubergine, charcoal, rose pink and I love greens. So I don't wear fussy styles but the clothes I love tend to be striking in colour and simple in cut. They do stand out and honestly HONESTLY that's not why I wear them - it's because I love the colour and cut and I have to suck up the occasional attention. I sometimes dither and look in the mirror and think...'or I could just wear my trousers and a t-shirt' but I try to be brave.

I'm not a glamorous person but I do like nice things.

Well yes I would take it badly as a lot of women have cumulative bad experiences over many years of horrible interactions from strange men in public which takes it's toll and leaves a mark on some. Men need to be made aware of this when they decide to approach women they don't know. His desire for 'banter' has trumped this. By repercussions I mean he may give her dirty looks or something. She already feels uncomfortable walking past him. I've never in my life considered talking to a stranger like this. He said it in a snarky tone. It's really bad manners.

dogsmaid · 03/08/2026 14:55

@CoffeeCantataI also like nice things, my family nickname is magpie 😆
As cheesy as it sounds wear things that make you happy, I really enjoy seeing people not dressed like everyone else.

I dunno what "Blade" means.

The Day walker Vampire in a film franchise. Wears a leather coat, combat boots

Agree!

TheHatTrick · 03/08/2026 15:45

How are you planning to dress when you go in to complain? Please say like Wonder Woman

What a beige world you must live in.

Beige because I don’t go out looking like blade runner or the matrix and start getting offended that I look like a dystopian dominatrix ?! 😂

Six boys were named Blade in 2011. Which gets them right to being a teenager entering their secondary school in 2026.

You’ve cracked it, well done 👍
The teacher was merely greeting another student and the OP, suffering from Main Character Syndrome, assumed he was talking to her.

dogsmaid · 03/08/2026 20:29

Someone upthread posted this outfit as an example. It just doesn’t give me Neo or dystopian dominatrix vibes but I guess others see things differently 🤷🏻‍♀️

OP is still missing in action then..

dogsmaid · 03/08/2026 20:33

She might be busy hunting vampires!

Bakeittillyoumakeit · 03/08/2026 20:41

Wow that sounds like quite the outfit OP. At least he didn't ask if you were wearing anything under it - that's what i would have been wondering.

TBF is was rude of him to comment - but I probably would have sniggered. Why on earth would you wear a leather trench coat at 8:45 am in May? Back in the day I'd have assumed it was a walk of shame tbh.

Now that's somebody who can carry off that look.

Yes. It’s the MN world of super cool people who don’t get offended by anything. Of course this was not a terrible insult in the scheme of things but it is a subconscious powerplay from a man to a woman yet again and it is astonishing that in 2026 people can’t see this. Men do not receive these comments from strange men, they just don’t.

Some of you really need to grow up - not to mention get a sense of humour and stop taking life so seriously.

It was funny, end of.

so OP is dresed like a vampire and is offended that someone noticed?

maxslice · 03/08/2026 21:53

It’s none of his damn business.

TeaIsLovely · 03/08/2026 21:59

My DH said I looked like a deckchair in my white/red striped shirt. I thought it was funny - but ended up selling it on Vinted as I want someone else to look like a deckchair 😂

Shaft wore a long leather coat and he was a sex machine (to all the chicks) and apparently he was a bad mother***)

Didn't Kate Beckinsale have a leather coat and looked sexy hot whilst handling powerful handguns and eliminating werewolves?

Greenmouldycheese · 03/08/2026 23:04

This was months ago and not a big deal. I hope you can move on.
