Unnecessary comment about my outfit from male member of staff at the school - your thoughts?

TwatAtSchool91 · 02/08/2026 21:49

I live a stones throw from a secondary school which I have to pass daily on our school run.

A male member of staff stands outside in the morning greeting the kids.

A few months ago he made a comment to me as I walked past him. It was a stupid remark, nothing vulgar or massively offensive, but it has bothered me to the extent I'm now self conscious about what I'm wearing whenever I have to go past him.

The comment he made was "morning Blade" in a mocking tone, both infront of the secondary school kids and my own.

(for reference I was wearing a belted leather trench coat and some black riding style boots)

It wasn't a friendly jibe, he was being a twat. I wouldn't give it much thought if he were a random in the street but he's stood there representing the school 😐

Would you have raised it with the school or not? Do you think it was inappropriate?

I’m about as a thick skinned as they come and would have rolled my eyes at him and inwardly thought “what a twat”.

I might’ve even had a similar thought to him if I’d passed the OP in the street….. but it would have stayed an internal thought.

I don’t know why I’m surprised that there are posters on here trying to justify why it’s ok to openly mock a strangers choice of clothing.

“it’s just a joke!” is a classic bully response when called out on their behaviour……. as an earlier poster said, this guy clearly never left the playground.

Yes. It’s the MN world of super cool people who don’t get offended by anything. Of course this was not a terrible insult in the scheme of things but it is a subconscious powerplay from a man to a woman yet again and it is astonishing that in 2026 people can’t see this. Men do not receive these comments from strange men, they just don’t.

What a prick. It’s just another example of men thinking they have a right to comment on what a woman is wearing. You should have written to the head at the time. It might be a bit late now. I can understand why you now feel uncomfortable walking past him.

Written to the Head? Seriously?
The man is a fool and yes, women shouldn't have random male comments, but seriously?
What do you think the Head should do?

Do you know for sure that he said it? It could have been one of the students. Unless you were walking along and looking at him as he said it, which would be weird, you can’t be sure those words came from his mouth.

Teenagers can be piss-taking little bastards sometimes, and it does sound like you’d dressed like Blade. Seems like the kind of thing a teenager would do.

But no of course you can’t report it to the school, you’d look ridiculous and they wouldn’t take it seriously.

🙄🙄🙄

UniquePinkSwan · 03/08/2026 06:43

I’d have laughed. It was a joke

PussyGaylore · 03/08/2026 06:45

It was a silly personal comment that I’m pretty sure he wouldn’t have made to a man.

I’d be a bit thrown by this too but to be dwelling on it a few months on is worrying.
I think maybe you should reflect on why this has got to you so much.

I think it's hilarious, however I'm one of 6 siblings and comments like this are an everyday occurrence.
I was once compared to a wasp when I wore a navy and yellow striped top. I still wore it.

Are people here stupid? Comparing a stranger commenting on a woman’s appearance to a sibling’s teasing?

Is a humerous a funny bone?

Edited

No. The ‘humerus’ is the upper arm bone. The funny bone refers to the ulnar nerve in the elbow area.

LuckyHazelFox · 03/08/2026 07:04

Power play? Only if you allow it to have that effect. Had he clicked his heels and said heil Hitler I might understand. Close the imbalance of what you see as power and respond accordingly or ignore.

I'm surprised by a lot of these comments saying it's no big deal. He mocked a female stranger in front of children and his place of employment. That's really weird, nasty and immature! I would be tempted to put a complaint in but I would also be wary of repercussions from him if I had to keep walking past him.

You see a significant hostility and threat in this situation. Im sorry if you go through the world with this mindset. It’s your fear of repercussions if OP were to complain that concerns me most.

localnotail · 03/08/2026 07:18

I think its funny and you are being ridiculous for wearing long leather trench coat and riding boots in this weather.

localnotail · 03/08/2026 07:20

Also, schools have been closed for a couple of weeks now.

How often do men say this stuff to other men on the street?

And? Why do so many people not read the OP? She refers to this being a few months ago, not yesterday.

Well she is even more unreasonable still stewing over a silly comment.

Copperoliverbear · 03/08/2026 07:23

sorry but you’re over reacting, maybe he likes you and made a stupid attempt to talk to you.

Who cares? They probably would laugh together if that happened.

Not seeing the issue

at all guess you don’t like him

This - if he’s attractive it’s a compliment/flirt if he’s not it’s harassment!

bumblingbovine49 · 03/08/2026 07:29

But Blade os really cool. Why would anyone take offense at that ?

Sartre · 03/08/2026 07:29

I think it’s pretty funny and would have laughed it off. Then again, I have a sense of humour.

babycomeover · 03/08/2026 07:37

Genuinely curious, do you tend to have low resilience in every aspect of your life?

dizzydizzydizzy · 03/08/2026 07:37

Hmmm….. I don’t like people commenting on my clothing, unless it is something obviously positive such as ‘you look good in that’. It makes me feel self-conscious and awkward, so that I then want to wear something that will make me fade into the background next time I see them. Having said that, I think it is now too late to complain. I would complain if he does it again. A teacher should know better. He has no right to pass comment on your outfit.

dogsmaid · 03/08/2026 07:38

Iwantanothergo · 03/08/2026 05:11

Don’t be silly.

In wearing a get-up like that you were making a deliberate choice about the impression it would make on others. If the impression wasn’t what you had hoped for you can’t complain!

🙄

DenizenOfAisleOfShame · 03/08/2026 06:35

This is the funniest thread in a long time.

Partly because of the image of OP going about dressed like Herr Flick (props to a pp for that one) and on the school run. 😂 But also for the amazingly weird comments from the offended-in-solidarity posters.

Leave the guy alone. He’s funny. And complimentary. Wesley Snipes/Blade is cool and kick arse.

This! Now if he’d shouted at her “ver is the Madonna with the big boobies?!” Maybe would be something to discuss…

Bunkerbun · 03/08/2026 07:40

Get a life

Notmycircusnotmyotter · 03/08/2026 07:43

I think of you dress like Blade you have to accept you might be called Blade 😂.

Also, a black trench coat and boots in this weather?!
