For neighbour to use a ladder to get my attention?

Day off today so decided to sleep in. At approx 8.50am I heard tapping on my window, half dazed I've opened the curtains and my neighbour was outside saying they couldn't get through to my phone (I checked after and had 3 missed calls) and would I give them a lift to the airport as taxi failed to show.
I don't know them (man and wife in their 60's) that well but I rushed out of house in nightgown and took them without thinking. Part of me thinks I just did a good deed and being a neighbour, other part thinks the ladder overstepped the mark.

Ah I love this, I hope they at least buy you a toblerone from duty free on the way home 😂

JMSA · 31/07/2026 11:29

The ladder thing was bonkers and overstepping in every way.

Best thing I have ever read on mumsnet

wgat did you talk about en
route?

do you live in an area where here there is only one taxi firm

where’s the ladder now?

did they offer cash for the petrol/your time ?

So many questions???…

Is it? You should probably read more stuff.

Had time to source a ladder and climb it but not an uber

Yeah right

There was no taxi

There was no ladder.

Whacker · 31/07/2026 11:59

You did such a nice thing for them, you’re a great neighbour.

HideousKinky · 31/07/2026 12:00

I don't think this is OK unless you are friends as well as neighbours who have a pattern of doing favours for each other eg feeding cats, watering gardens etc.

I always anticipate that this situation might arise where a taxi doesn't turn up for an airport trip - I have an arrangement with a particular friend that if this happens she will be my back-up and give me a lift

Using a ladder to tap on your window at 8.50 is mental. I probably would have told them to f off and go back to bed. I am rarely up before 9.30 now i don't work but if a rare lie in I am not doing favours for strangers who think it's OK to climb a ladder and knock on my window. If you can't get through on my phone then take the hint, i'm not interested.

"was going to try Trevor (another elderly neighbour) but he was having something rebandaged"

Such a special sentence 😂

You don’t know them but they had your phone number?

Yes I probably would have done it if I could but I’d have also said that I wasn’t happy with them climbing a ladder to knock on your window!

Sounds like a d**n cheek to me!
Lucky your bedroom curtains were closed.
I hope they bring a wonderful present back for you - a straw donkey will not cut it!

Hee, hee.

Greyhoundsmittenlady · 31/07/2026 15:54

You did a good deed, so well done. They were probably panicking over the no show. Hopefully they will return the favour, and not make a habit of it.

BasiliskStare · 31/07/2026 16:11

Can we have a diagram ?

I'm getting confused as to where airport couple , ladder snaffler and Trevor all are in relation to you. I presume your bedroom is at the front of the house (or do you have an unlocked gate at the side? ) I think some strategically placed large pots might have avoided all this but , sounds like all's well that ended well.

edit spelling

shrunkenhead · 31/07/2026 16:25

What a lovely neighbour you are, OP! They must've been stressing thinking they'd miss their flight. It's a funny story too! Sure they really appreciated your good deed

ShakyBake · 30/07/2026 23:35

Their son was on route but unlikely to get back in time and I passed him when I got back.

I don't know they said my car was on drive so knew I was in, but was going to try Trevor (another elderly neighbour) but he was having something rebandaged, I wasn't taking it all in by this point

Edited

Trevor.... was having something rebandaged,
Just when I didn't think it could get better!

But they would've missed their flight! I know it seems a tad extreme but they were desperate and clearly not au fait with Uber etc I would've felt terrible ignoring them, it was clearly an emergency and hard off to the OP. She's a good egg and will sleep soundly tonight knowing John and Bev made it to Menorca in one piece!

Thegirlwhowent · 04/08/2026 06:40

@sweetpickle2 Oddly enough, I'd read the same Wikipedia explanation but had misunderstood the meaning. I'm not sure why! Perhaps because it seemed to focus more on the fact that it was the moment after which things got worse, rather than how far-fetched it was? Your explanation is clearer and makes more sense. Thanks.
