For neighbour to use a ladder to get my attention?

ShakyBake · 30/07/2026 22:38

Day off today so decided to sleep in. At approx 8.50am I heard tapping on my window, half dazed I've opened the curtains and my neighbour was outside saying they couldn't get through to my phone (I checked after and had 3 missed calls) and would I give them a lift to the airport as taxi failed to show.
I don't know them (man and wife in their 60's) that well but I rushed out of house in nightgown and took them without thinking. Part of me thinks I just did a good deed and being a neighbour, other part thinks the ladder overstepped the mark.

was going to try Trevor (another elderly neighbour) but he was having something rebandaged

Please let this be true. I'll chuckle about it all dsy

Ethelspagetti · 31/07/2026 08:25

I think you’re a nice person to have helped them. I would not have helped them. My fil was woken up around 6am by elderly neighbours, asking for similar as their taxi hadn’t turned up. He took them, which I was surprised about as he isn’t that type to be helpful.

tomatoplants · 31/07/2026 08:25

This is so funny! The ladder is mad. They must have been desperate.

well done for taking them!! Many wouldn’t have.

You're a better person than me op, I'd have pushed his ladder down.

With them on it? That would be manslaughter charges and earn you a few years in jail.

Some people on MN say seriously stupid things.

QuirkyHorse · 31/07/2026 08:29

You did a good thing.
I can't get over that he put a ladder up to the window, genius 🤣

PuggyPuggyPuggy · 31/07/2026 08:33

Blimey OP, are you a character in a sitcom?

Jeez Louise girl you ever heard of hyperbole?

Unclench those cheeks 🙄

LogicVoid · 31/07/2026 08:34

You did a kind thing. And now you have a very funny story to share. Nobody died!

Wait until she finds out that her boss is coming to dinner!

I don't get hyperbole in writen posts. Be careful with your language on a public forum.

Esmeraldathe3rd · 31/07/2026 09:00

It's so bad and so ridiculous. But they were panicking and people don't do their best thinking when they're panicking.

You did a very kind thing and you weren't massively impacted. When they get back make sure to set very firm boundaries to ensure they never ever do that again.

I'm impressed by your agility OP, so many sharks jumped over in one post 👏

Genuine question- I've never understood what 'jump the shark' means so I just looked it up. It seems to mean reaching your peak so it's then all downhill? But I still don't understand how that relates to this post. Please explain for me. (I'm puzzled and a bit embarrassed that I don't get it!)

Isobel201 · 31/07/2026 09:06

There's no way I'd have been able to do that, good on you for helping. But I as the neighbour wouldn't have been so desperate in the first place and just driven to the airport.

Sam9769 · 31/07/2026 09:12

I hope you collect them from the airport on their return.
After all, they won't have their own car to drive themselves home as you deprived them of that opportunity. Trevor will be too incapacitated to do so and their son will probably be on holiday.
It's only fair, after all isn't it?

Not sure where you looked it up but thats not what it means. From wikipedia-

'"Jump the shark" is an idiom describing the exact moment a creative work, TV show, or brand exhausts its core premise and starts an unrecoverable decline, marked by an absurd, desperate stunt or gimmick.'

Basically when a story gets a little too far-fetched- it originates from a episode of Happy Days where The Fonz literally jumped over a shark on a waterski, people thought it was too silly.

It's used on here when people think the OP is making their story up.

Pancakeflipper · 31/07/2026 09:17

You don't know them but they have your phone number ? And they are incapable of knocking at the door?

Cailin66 · 31/07/2026 09:18

ShakyBake · 30/07/2026 23:11

About 15 miles but rush hour traffic so took 40mins each way

Your tale made me laugh out loud so thanks for that and thanks for being such a good neighbor. The poor dears must have been in a right panic, cannot believe a 60 year old thought it was a good idea to go up a ladder !

"I don't know them (man and wife in their 60's) that well"

She isn't saying she doesn't know them, just that she doesn't know them that well.

"He'd been knocking and ringing for 15 minutes"

They did knock the door.

morselover69 · 30/07/2026 23:19

next time open your window and push the ladder away

😂

Imsorrybut · 31/07/2026 09:19

I don't laugh at many posts (I'm uptight) but regardless of it's questionable genuine origin it gave me a good giggle! So its a win for me.

What these threads always throw up though is there are busy towns in England (not the back end arse of nowhere) that only has one or two taxi firms and no Uber!
I live in a weirdly popular tourist town, we do not have Uber, everywhere shuts at 11pm and if you want a taxi you need to book at least 24 hours in advance. No Whoosh, Uber Eats and all takeaways stop delivering at 10.30pm as well.
So a thread being believable shouldn't be measured on the fact they would of called an Uber.

Amandatelly · 31/07/2026 09:21

So you hopped out of bed and without even getting dressed, drove two people who are basically strangers to the airport? OK.

GoRabbit · 31/07/2026 09:26

knottybiscotti · 31/07/2026 07:46

I wouldn’t have believed this until I ended up living in a hamlet in the midlands. Only one taxi firm, you had to book in advance, no uber, no food delivery, neighbours would definitely knock your window but were very anti social - hence living there. Oddly there was a Waitrose ten minutes away. I now live in the centre of a town which is much more me. I once tried to get a taxi a week in advance on a Wednesday and he said he would take me on the Thursday!! My event wasn’t on the Thursday. I never knew anywhere in uk was so disconnected, so I can understand others disbelief.

Great story. I like and admire both of you.

WonderingWanda · 31/07/2026 09:32

Lotsofsnacks · 30/07/2026 23:30

Why did they keep on ringing you in particular, when u didn’t wake up at first, and not start trying another neighbour? Or someone they actually know? Or another cab firm?

Like the one who came and took the ladder?

Purplecatshopaholic · 31/07/2026 09:35

You are waaaay nicer than me then op. To me, there is only one answer to a man I don’t even really know using a ladder to knock on my bedroom window. And it’s FO weirdo….
