For neighbour to use a ladder to get my attention?

Day off today so decided to sleep in. At approx 8.50am I heard tapping on my window, half dazed I've opened the curtains and my neighbour was outside saying they couldn't get through to my phone (I checked after and had 3 missed calls) and would I give them a lift to the airport as taxi failed to show.
I don't know them (man and wife in their 60's) that well but I rushed out of house in nightgown and took them without thinking. Part of me thinks I just did a good deed and being a neighbour, other part thinks the ladder overstepped the mark.

next time open your window and push the ladder away

In the style of a comedy sketch.

I think you did the decent thing and this is hilarious

^^This is the way to think about it OP. A tale to tell and no harm done.

(So long as it's a one off!)

He'd been knocking and ringing for 15 minutes they said but I was sleeping and didn't hear anything and said 'we thought you were probably sleeping as my car was on drive '

Edited

Bloody hell! I'd have ripped them a new one for putting a ladder up to my window and considering it ok to wake me, the entitled bastards.

I don’t know….. I can think of at least 2 people who I can absolutely imagine doing something like this…..

Lotsofsnacks · 30/07/2026 23:30

Why did they keep on ringing you in particular, when u didn’t wake up at first, and not start trying another neighbour? Or someone they actually know? Or another cab firm?

Best thing I have ever read on mumsnet

wgat did you talk about en
route?

do you live in an area where here there is only one taxi firm

where’s the ladder now?

did they offer cash for the petrol/your time ?

So many questions???…

I live in a town in the SE, and getting a taxi is a nightmare

Their son was on route but unlikely to get back in time and I passed him when I got back.

I don't know they said my car was on drive so knew I was in, but was going to try Trevor (another elderly neighbour) but he was having something rebandaged, I wasn't taking it all in by this point

Does this mean you pre plan airport journeys more thoroughly with contingency planning or are you all in the habit of ladder climbing and tapping up Wee-Willy-Winky to nip you to the airport on the off chance?

sweetpickle2 · 30/07/2026 23:37

I can believe this, it is something my parents would do.

You’re a good person OP! I’d have told them to piss off.

Queenofheart · 30/07/2026 23:39

I would be frickin livid about thison so many counts. They are not friends, not family and barely know you yet they have the utter cheeky fuckery to put a ladder against your house and bang on your bedroom window and ask for a lift when clearly they knew you were sleeping ? Overstepping and intrusive.

I cant believe this is true. But if it is, it's hilarious. Soinds like.something out of Confessions of a Window Cleaner or Carry on Tapping.

Woodfiresareamazing2 · 30/07/2026 23:55

Does Uber operate where you are?!

Lisheenss · 31/07/2026 00:01

Absolute cheeky fxxkers OP, make no mistake.

RealLemonDreamer · 31/07/2026 00:02

You don’t know them but they have your number ?

He assumed you were sleeping because his car was on the drive? Or have you put your apostrophe in the wrong place?

I just came on to say that - I mean, don't they have any actual, y'know, friends they could ask? Why you if you don't actually know them? If any of this is true, they win the prize for sheer, brass-necked cheekyfuckery!

malmi · 31/07/2026 00:09

Was he on the ground using the ladder as a big stick to tap the window with or did he climb up it and tap with his hand? Because that one’s worse for me.

Rondayvu · 31/07/2026 00:16

morselover69 · 30/07/2026 23:19

I literally laughed out loud at this 😁

LadyBeatriceBeaHiggins · 31/07/2026 00:17

@ShakyBake welcome to mi5, thats the type of reactions from a good agent

BitterTits · 31/07/2026 00:23

I was with you until Trevor. Before he cropped up, they didn't give you the opportunity to ignore.
