For neighbour to use a ladder to get my attention?

Day off today so decided to sleep in. At approx 8.50am I heard tapping on my window, half dazed I've opened the curtains and my neighbour was outside saying they couldn't get through to my phone (I checked after and had 3 missed calls) and would I give them a lift to the airport as taxi failed to show.
I don't know them (man and wife in their 60's) that well but I rushed out of house in nightgown and took them without thinking. Part of me thinks I just did a good deed and being a neighbour, other part thinks the ladder overstepped the mark.

Your tale made me laugh out loud so thanks for that and thanks for being such a good neighbor. The poor dears must have been in a right panic, cannot believe a 60 year old thought it was a good idea to go up a ladder !

Most 60 year olds have basic balance and fitness nowadays.

powersthatbe · 31/07/2026 09:36

Are your neighbours called Terry and June?

next time open your window and push the ladder away

There will be a next time?!! 😂

Like the one who came and took the ladder?

D'oh!

Lilaclane · 31/07/2026 09:53

‘Trevor was having something rebandaged’

thanks for the snort laugh this morning, OP. Brilliant stuff!

Does this mean you pre plan airport journeys more thoroughly with contingency planning or are you all in the habit of ladder climbing and tapping up Wee-Willy-Winky to nip you to the airport on the off chance?

😂

Highlights12 · 31/07/2026 10:05

Sounds like they panicked & just wanted to get to the airport somehow, you’ll have a good laugh with them about it when they get home.

MrSchubertWhiskers · 31/07/2026 10:06

Wow bizarre as anything. How nice you were op!

When they get back I think you should tell them you were glad you could help but please don't ever use a ladder to my window like that again it's too intrusive '- just to reassert boundaries in case they start taking the piss.

Justanopinionnothingmore · 31/07/2026 10:06

Can imagine the benny hill music going throughout this haha.

I would not have been amused at being woken up like that at all. You're a nicer person than I am. I aren't sure what I would have done tbh if I would have taken them but you are a really decent kind person.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 31/07/2026 10:08

I’d have woken up but honestly I’d have waited until their son got there and let him take them. Suppose you weren’t there, would they try other neighbours for lifts? Ladder is a bit extreme.

DolefullySingingMotherfucka · 31/07/2026 10:12

Cheeky bastard. I'd have told him to bugger off and never darken my window again.

Picklelily99 · 31/07/2026 10:20

They climbed a ladder and KNOCKED ON YOUR BEDROOM WINDOW??? I'd be f@#*×&g apoplectic!!!

ChristmasCwtch · 31/07/2026 10:28

This doesn’t sound real. It’s bonkers.

Why didn’t they drive themselves to the airport and pay to park??!

If they’d climbed a ladder to knock my bedroom window and wake me up to drive them anywhere other than the hospital, they’d have found a raging banshee 😂

I only meant it from the point of view of the risk of falling !

I think the older couple were genius. Very fast thinking and efficient. I'm assuming they phoned another neighbor to take away the ladder ....

I see. Yes, shimmying up a ladder to ask for an airport lift, not my go to response, but hey.

Lexy2345 · 31/07/2026 10:44

Why didn't they wait for their son? Surely they weren't in danger of missing their flight?
Oh and 60 isn't elderly for those who are referring to the couple as old dears.

“In their 60s” isn’t 60. But “old dears” might well be wrong on both counts

Are you in England, it hasnt been nightgown weather were I am for months, is this some kind of in joke?

Don’t you have a dressing gown? They’re not uncommon

Thanks @morselover69, do you often try to kill people, because I nearly choked on my breakfast! 🤭

Jeez Louise girl you ever heard of hyperbole?

Unclench those cheeks 🙄

I'm not clenched at all but I do t understand how that's hyperbole, it's just plain not true, where is the in-between or pushing someone off a ladder and not pushing them off?

This thread is all kinds of bonkers

IJustMight · 31/07/2026 11:01

Had time to source a ladder and climb it but not an uber

Yeah right

There was no taxi

HectorPlasm · 31/07/2026 11:14

"was going to try Trevor (another elderly neighbour) but he was having something rebandaged"

Such a special sentence 😂

Eventmrs · 31/07/2026 11:18

I love this - well done you on being a good neighbour

Millytante · 31/07/2026 11:21

Alondra · 31/07/2026 08:58

I don't get hyperbole in writen posts. Be careful with your language on a public forum.

Her language was just fine, and there was no need for it to be edited down to a bone dry factual remark, in what’s obviously a very comical thread.
Context, my dear.

BettyRubblecausestrouble · 31/07/2026 11:23

Got asked for emergency lift to airport once at evening time.
we live 20mins from Heathrow so assumed and agreed.
got onto motorway ‘oh Gatwick please!’
4 hour round trip 🤬
No gift and barely a thank you.
refuse to even water their plants now
