AIBU to worry about large numbers of undocumented men arriving in Spain?

1000 replies

MaturingCheeseball · 30/07/2026 17:34

Thousands of young men from Morocco and beyond swimming to Spain. Spain obviously has encouraged the problem with their amnesty for existing migrants, but thousands more arriving with no means of support and undocumented is going to cause huge problems. Large numbers will no doubt be ultimately trying to reach the UK.

It’s harsh, but we cannot accept infinite numbers of men.

All good then. Just a jolly boys outing. As you were.

A jolly boy's outing? Only a complete numbskull would think that. 57 people are dead for a start.

That many on the same day seems strange don't you think?

Apparently (source not verified) there is an app which alerts users when border controls are weak and the sea calm. This may or may not be true. What we do need to remember is that migrants = money for criminals, as we see with dinghies crossing the channel. It's pointless to wander down the blind alley of plots by dark forces.

I don’t think it’s that the government is unbothered, it’s just extremely difficult to deal with.

No it’s not. We have an army and a navy. We could make sure they don’t get give more than the basics and send them back. Simple

It really isn't simple. 'Send them back' involves the people where 'they' came from accepting 'them'. If that doesn't happen, what is the army and navy to do? Please offer your suggestions, remembering that the armed forces should work on the basis that the law applies to them too.

@IdaGlossop

I think there will come a point where at least half the population will say, so what!
Why should we be landed with them if-and there must be a reason-the place from whence they came don't want them back.

If they just cover their ears and say "Na-Na" is that all it takes for their unwanted people to become our problem? That cannot be right.

You can see-even on these boards-that people are much more worried then they were, say two years ago and more and more will think that if a native country don't want their own people back then why, in the name of Zeus, should we be obliged to take them.

Maybe they could be sent back on a ship anyway and discharged into dingies when they approach the shore of their own land and what their own land decide to next will not involve us, as our ship will be sailing away.

Maybe they could be put in a barrel and sent to sail the seven seas, particularly if they have destroyed their papers!

Who knows but just because another country wants to try and take the piss does not mean that we should play along.

Once, not so long ago, people would have agreed with you but there is a growing shift towards a Who Gives a Fuck attitude and frightening scenes that we have just seen makes that attitude more common, more firm and less embarrassment about saying it.

I assume that they'd probably be wary of people they don't know well given the prevelance of that narrative. Muslims can read, they see threads like this.

You can't have it every which way, you want to be free to call 'them' rapists, accuse 'them' of being the type of people to throw women out of a boat, accuse 'them' of being part of some elaborate plan to take over Europe, call them 'scum', dehumanise and denigrate them(all of this has been said on this thread alone) and then have a pop at them for not wanting their kids at your house too Confused] That's the only 'bizarre' thing here.

So people can’t cliticise any aspect of immigration, because immigrants might read their comments and get offended?
Are Muslims all one big homogeneous group, and if someone expresses their concerns about single young men coming over in huge numbers, that means a Muslim family somewhere will take it personally and won’t allow their children to socialise with completely unrelated British kids?

My position is this. Successive British governments have failed in their first duty of protecting British citizens when it comes to irregular migration. Most irregular migrants who have come here over the last 10 years are young men from countries which have a turbulent recent history - war, genocide, extreme poverty and unemployment, failed states. Thus those who come bring trauma with them. Most also come from cultures in which women do not enjoy the hard-won freedoms we enjoy in the West. From the very first arrivals, accommodation should have been made available on Ministry of Defence sites as the default, following the internment practices of wartime. Housing in hotels and HMOs amongst established communities should never even have been considered.

In addition, steps have not been taken to discourage people from coming irregularly - a less generous benefits regime, earlier tightening of ILR, more safe routes, more and quicker deportation, adjustements to the law to limit the number of appeals per asylum seeker, tightening up equalities and human rights legislation, swifter and more efficient processing. Shabana Mahmood is the only Home Secretary who seems to understand this.

Sending people back is not as simple as a nation of origin saying no. Most irregular migrants have no documents. We are nolonger in the EU so have lost the right to return those who Ross the Channel to France.

Managing irregular migration in a way which prioritises reducing it above all else would leave us able to continue to offer asylum with the generosity we have largely shown since World War 2.

Recent governments have exposed women in particular to violence, including sexual violence, and facilitated the rise of the populist right. We should all be absolutely furious that we have been let down so badly as women, and that moderate governments have emboldened the immoderate. In all of this, however, it's so important to separate the issue of irregular immigration from the individuals who choose to come here. The dehumanising language that casually refers to 'them' and 'illegals' does nothing to help anyone understand the problem, making solutions even harder to find.

So I will never be in the half of the population that you predict will, say 'So what?' to whatever callous approaches are proposed to manage illegal immigration, not least because, as some of those who propose them are only too willing to tell us, Britain is a Christian country. Those who want the Coast Guard to slash dinghies with knives and midges on Scottish Isles to eat the flesh of people not our own should be ashamed of themselves, but I doubt that they are.

Typo

While it is natural that this horrible turn of events brings our attention to immigration, the colossal number of people in a short space of time implies an intentional act. Morocco definitely has an interest in destabilising Spain, both due to Ceuta and Spain’s recent trade agreements with Algeria. It is also entirely possible (though I will not say for certain as I don’t have proof) that Israel and the US could have provided some form of support. They both have a lot of interest in tearing down Spain. This makes more sense than Russia as Russia is more concerned with countries it deems “Russophobic” such as The UK.

It is a theory expressed also by Sumar. I would consider Sumar extreme left, I would be more PSOE left than Sumar left but you are not the only one thinking along those lines as Sumar publicly says similar

Sumar y los socios de izquierdas del Gobierno denuncian un complot de Marruecos, EEUU e Israel

Aseguran que el gobierno del país vecino ha utilizado a sus ciudadanos para presionar políticamente a España

Reform and Farage are crashing down in the polls with all these dodgy donations being finally scrutinised.

So, surprise surprise the Daily Fail comes up with a scary headline about immigrants 'flooding' Spain and then it is picked up by people to try to revive the small boats narrative here.

Burham must be doing something right as well if the right wing bottom feeders are getting that desperate.

In the Manchester mayoral election yesterday Reform came in second with just over 157,000 votes. Hardly a crash.

localnotail · 01/08/2026 07:29

I think reading the news it is obvious that this crossing was deliberately orchestrated by Morocco to get back at Spain for their political disagreements. What is worrying is how ineffective Spanish border controls are and how easy it seemed for people to cross.

Seems like Morocco and whoever else was behind this wanted the reaction they got from the rest of Europe - destabilization, support for extreme far right and fear.

localnotail · 01/08/2026 07:31

To add- this is not the first time illegal immigrants are used as a weapon. Belorussia/ Russia used to usher people into EU, too. Literally bring bussloads of migrants to the border and release them.

localnotail · 01/08/2026 07:36

As a Londoner, also wanted to add comments on Whitechapel and Ilford. Both are very scruffy and their residents are obviously low income. But do they feel like being abroad? Nope. Feels like England. Like, for example, poor areas of Derby 30 years ago. You would have an issue only if you hate seeing non white faces. Which is, you know, has a word for it.

CoffeeCantata · 01/08/2026 07:36

I’m glad that Andy B acknowledged yesterday that this event was highly concerning. The more people dismiss concerns about mass illegal migration the more power to the far right.

i just hope the dinosaurs who still think these concerns are based on racism (or pretend they do…) will wake up and smell the coffee.

I agree that what happened is bloody worrying and is nothing to do with racism. This was a warning sign of things to come and Europe should take notice.

Call them what you want. People thinking that way is their right. You're not going to guilt trip them into changing their minds. Until they carry out activity that comes under the official category of racism, they are doing nothing wrong.

Whatevergoes2025 · 01/08/2026 07:56

Well the main outcome to all this is that borders will be (hopefully) strengthened so I will be grateful for that.

And that the people who survived enjoyed their day out before heading back. It was like a weird piece of dystopian performance art.

What are you saying then?
As mentioned previously, I’m an immigrant myself.
There was hostility and protests against immigration at the time when my family arrived in our host country.
That didn't make my parents so suspicious of their surroundings that they wouldn’t let me and my siblings socialise with local kids.
Quite the opposite, they wanted us to integrate.
If some Muslim families won’t let their children have playdates with non-Muslim kids, that’s on them.
No need to explain away their behaviour with some hostile social media posts they might have read.

I did not call them anything. I just said there is a word for it... and frankly, what other word would you use for people hating their fellow humans on the basis of their race?

I get the issues with the culture, the language. But not the skin colour.

Horrible for the people who died.

Not necessarily hating though is it. People are allowed to feel uncomfortable with any situation. Multiculturalism is a multi faceted ideology, that can be embraced or rejected - it's not just about skin colour.

Don't forget it's deliberate, WEF-backed, the majority of sexual assaults are committed by illegals, and the UK will be a majority Muslim country by 2030.

The Muslim population of the UK is currently between 6.5 - 8%. Demographers estimate that by 2030 it will be 8.2%.
