To be a bit cheesed off by this window display?

Saw this on the high road today. My daughter asked what it meant bless her. The rest of the display on the other side included cross dressing obscene mannequins who had large breasts and moustaches etc. This was a charity shop that supports homelessness.

mammalian biology is only binary at the level of gametes which is a reproductive cell containing a single set of unprepared chromosomes.

The development of genetic, hormonal and anatomical sex characteristics is not binary in any way.

However, there are frequent chromosomal variations ie the platypus which has a complex 5 pair chromosome system.

In humans we see non binary development which shows us that physical anatomy is not a flip switch.

Gender, which is not biology as it is a social construct, is not the same as sex which is the biological aspect and non binary.

This is what happens when people get their science education from charity shop window displays.
Mammalian sex is binary.

Well, yes, I agree. Human biology as whole is not binary, think leg length or hair colour, but I think the sign in the shop window was alluding to sex, as in male/female, which is binary. You can get disorders of sexual development, but they are still either male or female and are not discrete sexes in their own right.

Can you explain how "leg length or hair colour" means humans are not binary?

deadpantrashcan · 30/07/2026 12:06

Theunamedcat · 30/07/2026 01:13

Is there anything that they are not more likely to experience at this point? For such a small percentage of the population they sure do experience a lot

Is this purposely baiting? Would you actually say this to someone without hiding behind a keyboard? Do you honestly, actually, have such little empathy for other human beings?

Human biology IS binary in term of sexes.
I doubt the window display is much to do with the charity's ethos and more about the interests of the blue haired, autistic young woman working there.

The most likely reason to be homeless is being female.
The highest percentage of a group that are homeless are autistic people.
Trans people are 3 to 6 times more likely to be autistic.

lifeinthelastlane · 30/07/2026 12:10

Does the other sign say "protect trans youth"? And that's in conjunction with a sign about breast removal in healthy women?

We are not Platypus we are humans.

Sex is binary.

Disorders in sexually development, such as a micro penis, doesn’t mean that a male is female or a third sex.

Co-joined twins do not prove humans have either one or two heads. Jesus wept. it’s not difficult.

yes it really does.

It says that sex isn’t binary alongside a picture of surgically removed breasts.

I mean you couldn’t make it up.

The term 'biology' means the study of life and living organisms and includes botany, microbiology and zoology amongst other things so thinking that 'biology' only refers to human sex is a bit short sighted to say the least.

The part of 'biology' that relates to human sex is binary. Other parts of 'biology', such as the development of limbs, skin tone, the size of your ears etc. are not binary.

ETA: saying 'humans are/are not binary' as a phrase on its own is meaningless.

I know what "biology" means. Thank you.
I never once claimed that "it only refers to human sex"
Read my actual posts, not what you imagine is written.

You can't understand why human sex is binary but other human characteristics are not binary?

Sex is not just a gametic perspective though, sex is a full range of physiological and genetic traits which is non binary.

what the shop is alluding to doesn't take away from that.

Hormones overlap between sexes, genetalia both external and internal can develop with varying characteristics.

Sex is only binary in theory and actual human biology is not, so regardless of views on sex, it just is not binary.

Hallamlass · 30/07/2026 12:20

We're in a sad state of affairs. Back in the 70s in my formative years, boys and men often had long hair. Men could wear frilly shirts, tight loon pants and strings of beads and not be labelled as "trans". Girls and women could have their hair cut short and wear baggy jeans and DMs, with similar freedom of expression.
Nowadays a teenage girl chooses not to wear false eyelashes or long nails and gets her hair cut and people ask if she's trans. It's not healthy.

You are confusing sex, with traits affected by sex.
Hormones, height, breast size, body hair etc in humans will all be affected by sex. But being taller, hairier or having a bigger penis doesn't make you more male.

What that kind of slogan means appears to be 'Let us make any stupid decision we like without being challenged!' It's amazing the traction this has achieved in the last 20 years or so. We have laws restricting the ability of the individual to make harmful choices or engage in certain activities when they are too young to understand the consequences or to be trusted to behave responsibly, e.g. getting a tattoo, buying and drinking alcohol, joining the armed forces, getting married, buying a knife, driving a car. We have other laws preventing anybody of any age from doing things Parliament has deemed are against the interests of society, e.g. selling a kidney or having a healthy limb amputated because of a mental health problem. We have NHS policies restricting adults with capacity from making choices which the NHS believes some of them might regret later and blame the NHS for, e.g. having a hysterectomy in their 20s to alleviate gynaecological problems and then realising they actually do want to have children.

But somehow it's all different when an individual with a mental health problem related to gender identity wants to have surgery to remove and remodel sex-specific body parts and/or wants to take drugs which are known to create serious health problems that weren't there before and which will lead to the individual being a lifelong medical patient, possibly with a shortened life expectancy. Anybody standing in their way is a bigot and is obviously only preventing them because they want to see them dead. Why have people in authority given in to this?

It was an example of mammalian binary which you raised.

Unfortunately you are still incorrect scientifically.

Sex has never been binary and will never be binary, in fact binary sex is only true in theory not reality.

Even intersex, which is not a third sex at all, proves non binary sex as they possess multiple differences to individual genders and are in fact just showing differences in genetic make up which is triggered to form develipment.

You are absolutely washing over the fact that variations of so many kinds prove tha assigning a strict binary at birth completely over simplifies biological reality.

You cannot seriously argue against science?
But even if you are, why does someones choice of gender or body modification bother you? Do you also hate people who have breast enlargements or hair plugs, other forms of gender affirming care?

Human biology is not binary meaning it is not a straight line to development, it is here there and everywhere, anatomy not being a flip switch is just a lab phrase we use but it just means that the body cannot turn functions on and off at the press of a button it is in fact a gradual complex system.

If biology was binary as keeps being stated, then we would not have the differences in development that we do from anything to muscle repair to childbirth which are just common developments but it applies also to other bodily development including the brain and to transgender people.

Our physical states and mental states exist on a spectrum rather than a simple on off feature.

Actually hormones do not overlap.

For example the lowest testosterone found in males is still significantly higher than the highest levels in any woman. In fact if a woman had the lowest level of testosterone seen in a male she would be very ill indeed.
