To ask ds to ask his gf to dress appropriately?

Daisypod · 26/07/2026 20:26

We are going to a national trust place soon and ds has asked if his relatively new gf can come. I’m fine with that but she does tend to wear very revealing clothing (skirts only covering half her bum!)
Would I be unreasonable to ask for her to dress a little more conservatively for the day? If so how would you say it?
I really try to not judge others clothing choices but honestly I think showing this much is a bit much for a family day out.

Does a short skirt affect her walking ability?

No op, I don’t think you can say anything, unless you have little value in your relationship with your son

I wouldn’t say anything, but I wouldn’t take her either. She should have a variety of clothes for different occasions like most people do. Festivals and concerts, fine to show your arse. Afternoon with bf’s mum, show some respect instead.

Which she might well do.

I didn’t realise there was a dress code for going to a NT place!
Maybe I’ve been out of line for ages 😱😱

There isn't lol. The OP disapproves of the clothing lol. Forgetting she was young once.
Who wants to go to a national trust place anyway

I had an ex whose mum often commented that my clothing was "too bright" or "awfully colourful." I like bright colours, and I wasn't wearing neon - think coral, sunshine yellow etc. Her comments did not endear me to her.

When I was a teenager, I also had an ex whose mother constantly criticised my clothing. I was told my skirts/shorts were too short and she mentioned it every time I wore black or DM boots . Occasionally, she would comment that I was wearing something which looked secondhand (yep) or like a man's shirt (also yep). I looked exactly like every other indie kid in the 90s! I avoided her as much as possible.

Skirts only covering half her bum????

Meaning you can see her knickers as she walks away

BabblingBiddy · 26/07/2026 21:16

I went to a NT place recently with a younger relative (18). She wore those tiny, tight shorts with matching cropped top that seem to be so trendy. Nothing bad happened. We had a lovely day, and i miss having a figure like hers.

ARingtoit · 26/07/2026 21:16

It would come across as deranged if you did this, sorry! I'm sure it would really embarrass your son.

"There is no objectively “correct” way to dress."

Of course there is. Would you wear a polka dot bikini to a funeral? Maybe you would, but more fool you.

There are social norms about what is ‘correct’ to wear to a funeral, but those norms are different in every culture and society. There are some cultures where it’s perfectly acceptable to turn up to a funeral naked. So there definitely isn’t one correct way to dress.

Daisypod · 26/07/2026 21:16

Ok ok I take the point and I won’t say anything.
i know I certainly wore questionable clothes when I was young (t shirt with Jesus is a cunt on the back) but that was to nightclubs, not family events.
Also I’m not taking about a short skirt that shows some bum when walking, it was literally only covering half the cheeks, worn with stockings and suspenders with a g string. I think most people would think that a bit much for a family outing!

There is no part of me that believes this.

Sounds boring as hell, cant imagine she'll be remotely interested in going, why did you invite her if you think her clothing will be inappropriate. Its only National Trust, not the garden party at Buckingham Palace

Honestly I was out on Friday evening and a woman was wearing this

Cradle of Filth?

There are so many threads on here lately about 'inappropriate' clothes from what the neighbour hangs on the line to what a cleaner wears to suitable ensembles for cream tea in a National Trust tearoom.

Maybe this OP's son is going out with the other OP's cleaner.

DontrockthecaravanGeoffrey · 26/07/2026 21:19

Steeleydan · 26/07/2026 21:16

Seriously though, how often does this happen?

Does the OP's son's girlfriend really walk around with a skirt that show her knickers? How often does anyone see this in real life?

There are more posts on MN about women's inappropriate dress than there are women walking around in skirts that come half way down their arse.

Gerbills · 26/07/2026 21:19

No wonder so many boys and men think it’s okay to control women when their own mothers are advocating that they do it.

It is not okay on so many levels.

GingerdeadMan · 26/07/2026 21:20

I thought this was going to be about a family wedding, or church service, or posh restaurant.

If she's not breaking any dress code you have no right to impose your standards on her. Let her parents sort it out (or not).

12234m · 26/07/2026 21:20

My son's ( now ex thank goodness) gf met his grandparents in a dress that had a thigh high split, off the shoulder and very low cut. I was gobsmacked that a woman of early twenties didn't know that was an inappropriate outfit.

Is she dressing that way as she wants your son to look, or what? I never believe that women feel empowered to be half naked when out.

WhatAMarvelousTune · 26/07/2026 20:46

It’s not just about policing what women wear (and actually I think the responses would be the same if it was a man’s clothes OP had an issue with).

This is her son’s girlfriend. There’s no way to make this request that doesn’t cause issues. However it’s worded, whoever says it, no matter how well intentioned, there’s no way she doesn’t take it as “my boyfriend’s mum thinks I dress like a slut”.

Depending on the location, you could make practical suggestions. Eg the national trust we often go to a lot has a really long hilly stony walk that we do, as well as a nice house. If it’s somewhere like that and you’re doing a walk, suggesting sturdy shoes might result in her not wearing a skirt and instead going for a walking boots and shorts outfit. Or saying you’ll be having a picnic on the grass so not to wear anything she doesn’t want grass stains on.

And She’d take it that way because OP absolutely means it that way.

Esmeraldathe3rd · 26/07/2026 20:58

God no. Do not teach your son he has a right to tell his girlfriend what to wear.

Glad someone said this!

Loubissou · 26/07/2026 21:22

NT doesn't have a dress code.

Jane379 · 26/07/2026 21:22

SummerInSun · 26/07/2026 20:33

Exactly this. She can dress however she wants. You don’t get to decide what is or isn’t appropriate. There is no objectively “correct” way to dress. If this were the Victorian era you’d be appalled if she showed a glimpse of ankle!

'There is no objectively “correct” way to dress'

  • that's ridiculous, not showing your bum IS a basic standard. I wouldn't want to see a man doing that either, would you?

It's not my place to police what anyone wants to wear but I also don't spend my time with people who wear shirts so short that half their bum is showing and their g strings.

And I definitely do not want to walk around with them in public because I have very different values.

The big question is why is your son attracted to such a woman?
