To ask ds to ask his gf to dress appropriately?

We are going to a national trust place soon and ds has asked if his relatively new gf can come. I’m fine with that but she does tend to wear very revealing clothing (skirts only covering half her bum!)
Would I be unreasonable to ask for her to dress a little more conservatively for the day? If so how would you say it?
I really try to not judge others clothing choices but honestly I think showing this much is a bit much for a family day out.

Are you refused entry from a national trust property if you are not in a floral midi dress and trainers?

superspideysense · 26/07/2026 20:48

Please don’t. She can wear what she wants.

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 26/07/2026 20:48

Don’t say anything, you will just make her annoyed or self conscious, both are not good.
That she is not dressing appropriately is your opinion and not a matter of fact.

Yes and that's just the men.

Wheresthebeach · 26/07/2026 20:48

Are you nuts?

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 26/07/2026 20:49

I do think footwear is different. It’s fine to say if certain footwear is required or not appropriate.

parachutegirl · 26/07/2026 20:49

You obviously can’t police her clothing directly but you could suggest going for a walk around the grounds that absolutely will have some stingers on some of the overgrown paths so it’s advisable to wear trousers.

sassyduck · 26/07/2026 20:50

Do not say anything. It will 100% end badly for you.

Gladitsraining · 26/07/2026 20:51

If you feel embarrassed by the way she dresses why don't you go on the outing without your DS and his g/f?

Why is that different? Is someone is happy to walk in whatever they are wearing why would you think it was okay to “require” them to wear a certain type of shoe to dander around a Manor House garden?

MeridaBrave · 26/07/2026 20:51

If it was a church I’d say there is a dress code. I think you’ll just have to suck it up.

Velvera · 26/07/2026 20:52

Just avoid the adventure playground. In case she fancies a go on the swings.

Cosmosforbreakfast · 26/07/2026 20:52

Why do you want your son to dictate to her what she wears? Do you really want him to come across as a wet blanket, controlling, mummy's boy? Let her wear what she wants.

TerribleEntrepreneur · 26/07/2026 20:53

Wait til you find out what the statues wear at National Trust places.

I was walking behind 2 young women earlier this afternoon. One had a skirt that blew up to her waist (it was breezy here). She had no underwear on - unless it was a tiny dental floss thong. She kept pulling her skirt back down.
A man walking beside me said 'I can't be looking at that' and he crossed the road.

Gooseling · 26/07/2026 20:53

How old is she?

Is she a teen? As the very short skirt/shorts are very “in” right now, and have been for a while.

I don’t think you should say anything though. She probably thinks your style is hideous, as teens usually do with middle aged mothers.

Minasama · 26/07/2026 20:54

Yanbu but you will only create trouble, saying anything won’t land well.

The most you could do is say to your son “can you see if she will wear suitable clothes, nothing too revealing?” . But don’t put pressure on him and accept his answer if it’s no.

HollyhocksandPeons · 26/07/2026 20:55

Your DS should be able to sort it out himself, such as 'Tomorrow we are going out, as a group, with my parents. They have been properly brought up and they get terribly embarrassed when they are seen in a group with inappropriate people, inappropriate meaning behaviour, clothes, any outward signs. I would like to ask you not to embarrass them and dress appropriately, I don't want my parents to feel awkward'.

And we conclude from this, as since the dawn of time, that Young Women Are Bad.

The ritual is complete.

Tut Tut.

That’s hilarious!

If there is going to be a lot of walking and a long day out simply suggest she wear trainers and jeans for that reason.

No not really. I don't particularly want to see bare arses on my my way to the shops - male or female.

Esmeraldathe3rd · 26/07/2026 20:58

God no. Do not teach your son he has a right to tell his girlfriend what to wear.

I’m sure that will go down well.
