to think the UK should have bidets

Just that really. I far prefer the French habit of having a wash after having a no 2, much more civilised. The British way is actually unhygienic and gross.

Just install the toilet hose.

anon666 · 19/07/2026 10:40

You can buy a Japanese toilet in the UK. We don't have the space for a bidet generally, small homes.

There was a fashion for larger new builds to have bidets in the early 1980s but then it seem to fizzle out. I don’t know why.

If you've got a hairy arse (pretty much all men), then standard toilet paper is fighting a losing battle.

Does hair go that far in though? I thought the skin there was a more delicate, follicle-less type of skin?😕

No one wants bottom splats to clean in a bidet.
Yuck.

MandemChickenShop · 19/07/2026 13:13

we have one but I don't know how to use it

GellerYeller · 19/07/2026 13:31

My friends have a Japanese style toilet. The controls stick out of the side so it takes up more space and there do seem to be loads of functions so looks difficult to fix it yourself if they break down.
Also it’s in a very narrow downstairs loo, meaning their less agile mum struggles to use it with her walking aid. Something to think about if anyone’s considering one. The heated seat is nice though!
Disclaimer: I’ve never tried the bidet or blow dry functions 😂
As for the poo flannels, that HAS to be a joke, right? Do guests use the same bathroom? Just no.

What on earth happens when you go to the toilet? 😮 you do wipe before using a bidet!

Install a Closomat Wash and Dry Toilets for a Superior Hygienic Clean https://share.google/f7NHqVpTu9ZovgnRl

That's the one I have - a Closomat.

Yes but bidets are open and can splash bacteria all round the bathroom.
You can flush a toilet with the lid down.
All those poo bits flying like Armageddon around your bathroom. All over your tooth brushes.
Yum

I use a sitz bath, ie a portable bidet bowl. Like this one, except mine is not collapsible.

Let me explain. You put the plug in and put some warm water in the bidet. You then straddle it and use a little soap (preferably intimate safe) and either your hand (remember you have wiped), or a cloth to wash whatever you want to wash down there. Rinse, then get off, pull out the plug, turn the tap on again (gently) to rinse. And pat yourself dry with a towel. What about that process suggests you will contaminate your bathroom?

Also, modern bidets also have a lid, with a little gap at the back for water to go through from the tap.

HostaCentral · 19/07/2026 16:31

Just to re-iterate........ You wipe your bum BEFORE you go on the bidet. A bidet is essentially just a small bath for your arse. If you bathe in a bath, then you can bathe your arse in a bidet.

I think it may be something to do with heat differentials between, for example, Italy and the UK. I will happily cool my bits down in a bidet in Italy several times a day. Quick swish with water, you have your own bidet towel to dry with, exceptionally refreshing without the need for a full shower.

I use a wet wipe after wiping with loo roll. Job done.

Me too, though I never flush them. They go in a bag and then in a bin. I’m an eco warrior, so both bag and wipe are biodegradable.

happychops · 19/07/2026 22:06

We have a Geberit wash and dry loo. Husband loves it but I’m not so keen - feels a bit odd being washed and blow dried!

pollyglot · 19/07/2026 22:17

Agreed. Bought a house recently with one, and I love it. But it's kind-of addictive in that I don't feel clean when staying elsewhere now.

inappropriateraspberry · 23/07/2026 08:59

Get one then, they’re not banned in the uk! 😆

ThatSouthernGuy · 26/07/2026 22:18

Before I had a bidet, I used a shower attachment on my taps which worked well. When the bathroom was renovated a bidet was installed and is used regularly/daily.
considering that some nations think we are a clean race, I’m surprised that modern houses do not have them fitted as standard.
My new partner has never used them until she used mine. She realised how convenient they are and uses it when required.
My advice, fit on if you want one or use a shower head. Don’t flush wet wipes if you use them down the toilet.

Can I just say, I've never been able to quite imagine how a bidet is used, I always thought you ran the taps like a water fountain? Your description of a small bath has cleared it up for me, but now I feel stupid because of course!!

YourAmplePlumPoster · 05/08/2026 09:43

Every loo should have a hose attached to the wall. Takes up less space than bidets. Loo roll never does as thorough a cleansing job.

KimWexlersPonyTail · 16/07/2026 13:31

They were really popular in the 1970s then everyone took them out. My cousin still has hers.

My parents had one installed in a new build in the 70s. We used it to wash our feet.

Ladyfromthehill · 05/08/2026 10:04

bigboykitty · 16/07/2026 13:36

There is, actually. Bidets are not permitted in the UK under plumbing regulations because of 'backflow' issues.

Wrong!
You can install but they have to meet certain criteria.

Ladyfromthehill · 05/08/2026 10:04

I think Japanese toilets should become a thing worldwide. Problem solved.
