to think the UK should have bidets

Just that really. I far prefer the French habit of having a wash after having a no 2, much more civilised. The British way is actually unhygienic and gross.

I live in the U.S. Bidets are becoming very popular here.

I have one that attached to the toilet - so not a separate unit. It's a seat that's heated and has all the different bum blasters on it. The water is as warm or as cold as you want and its got a blow dryer as well, to get your bum nice and dry afterwards. Its also got a fancy blue light for those romantic night-time bum washes - I guess.

I love it. It's got a front wash, for the girls, so I don't need any toilet paper anymore. Technically you don't even have to wash your hands afterwards. It's got different kinds of blasters. One is like an enema, for when you have a turd caught in the chamber. Its got blaster that goes back and forth and also a massage setting to give you a really good wash. And a remote control.

You have to have an electrical outlet nearby, so it can't be used in the UK because you don't have bathroom electrical outlets in there.

We I stalled shittafs in our bathroom and toilets - love them. I really don’t know why we do not have these everywhere in the UK

solvendie · 16/07/2026 20:08

Oops - unfortunate typo….shattaf 😂

If you think life without a bidet is unhygienic and gross, you're doing something wrong.

With regards to the poo bucket and flannels, the Romans used to have communal poo sponges. You'd go the lavatories, do you business, clean yourself with the communal sponge and leave it for the next person.

AllJoyAndNoFun · 16/07/2026 20:27

I saw a reel the other day where an incel was saying he doesn’t wipe as it’s gay to touch your own ass. The mind boggles

Get one of those Japanese toilets? Flushes, washes, dries.

Have you tried one? I have and honestly they don't work well at all.

I personally think bidets are filthy things unless everyone has their own private one. Just grim.

Wype gel and toilet paper is they cleanest way surely.

With all due respect, I'd like to think that in the following 2000 years, we have more ved on a bit in terms of infection control

Used to have one at work in the accessible shower/toilet. No instructions but figured it out. 100 million Japanese can't be wrong!!

I'm in my 50's and for every single holiday I have ever had (at home or abroad), the things I've most looked forward coming home to, is my own bed and my own bog.

Last year I went to Japan. On returning, I was very glad to see my own bed, but when I saw my own loo, I could have cried.

I've told husband that when we do the bathroom out next, we're getting at Japanese toilet and I don't care if U.K. regulations don't like it.

Whynottryagain · 16/07/2026 21:10

I agree with you on the unhygienic aspects of using paper. I didn't always. But after having an anal fissure and a baby who used reusable wipes, I tried using a damp cloth and it was a revelation. Much much better when on your period too.

We have a stack of cotton Cheeky wipes by the toilet and a small wet bag hanging off the toilet roll holder. We wet and use the cloth then put it in the bag. There's no smell. Then they are washed at 60 degrees along with cleaning cloths and towels. I'm not squeamish about this after using reusable nappies.

I don't have a bidet but we do keep a flannel and a bucket next to our bathroom toilet. After a number 2 we have a good scrub then rinse it out for the next person. Not quite as good but we all manage to keep clean enough.

I can't get my head around everyone using the same rinsed out flannel 😫why not just use some moist toilet tissue/wipes.

Think that poster is having a laugh and people think they are been serious.

We had a 1970s brown one in the shared house I lived in in my 20s. It was great for washing your feet if you'd made the rookie mistake of going on the tube in flip flops.

surreysarah · 16/07/2026 21:41

I am in utter hysterics over the poo flannel and other posts. Surely this thread is one for classics 🤣

Oh God I was surprised by one of these and not in a good way. The people in the next hotel room probably heard my screams!

We also have similar seats in the US and I had outlets installed right beside the toilets beforehand to accommodate them, as the other ones would have been too far away. Would this not be allowed in the UK?

Also, I must admit I've been too scared to use the 'enema' setting 😄

I do remember a girl at school telling me rather authoritatively (for a 14 year old) that the French had bidets because they were "always having sex in the daytime" and had to rush back to work without time for a shower. A bidet meant they could douche their bits so their spouse couldn't detect any foul play.

Sounds about right to me. I lived there for a year…

I'd go very gingerly with the blue light: it is likely to attract mosquitoes just where you don't want them.

I just have a fundamental ick issue having water quirted at me that has come out of a bum cleaning receptacle.

Then again, they are a fallen civilisation ...

OverOrUnderprotective · 16/07/2026 22:21

I don't get bidets. I mean I really can't figure out how to use them. Are you meant to get up from the toilet with a dirty bum to then go on the bidet? However I highly suspect that this is my ignorance talking and actually bidets are very hygienic it you know how to use them.

I absolutely agree though that cleaning yourself with just toilet paper after a poo is not hygienic and when I speak to people who grew up in eg South Asia they think it's crazy to not clean up yourself properly after a poo. (They also don't understand why Europeans don't go to the toilet in the morning before having a shower).

In our house we keep mugs next to the toilet but I would love to have one one of those hand showers that some Asian countries have installed next to the toilet so you can clean yourself while sitting on the toilet.

allthemind · 16/07/2026 22:49

I agree with you and would love a shower. I often have a quick hand shower after a number 2 and a bidet would be quicker and easier. I'm not sure most uk bathrooms have room for both a shower and a toilet though. You can get combo toilets and bidets these days but im not sure how hygienic that is either ..

allthemind · 16/07/2026 22:49

Love a bidet!

AintNobodyHereButUsChickens · 16/07/2026 23:32

I’ve never understood how you’re actually supposed to use a bidet. Do you squat over it with your bum pointed at the tap? Who’s doing that?? My knees could never!
