AIBU to dress up to match my son for his prom?

Hi there. My son has his high school prom coming up next month as he's 16 and doing his GCSEs at the moment. He's chosen his outfit choices and I've purchased both suits that he liked so he has a choice. He's gone for purple suits which are lovely. I've also purchased myself a lovely purple dress and some nice shoes so that he can have some lovely mum and son photos taken on his special night. I showed them to my partner and all he has said is that they're nice and will look great but why am I making such an effort when it's not even my night? He says it's silly and isn't necessary. He thinks I'm overdoing it on the effort for a night that isn't for me. Is it really unreasonable to want to make the effort or is he just being unnecessarily mean

I mean at least it's not the purple dress so its nowhere near the same colour as his suit lol. Surely red and black is the complete opposite especially with rainbow coloured shoes

Absolutely. A red and black dress with rainbow shoes was the perfect compromise to make it clear it's his night.

Thankyou the shoes are more rainbow other than the purple bow lol. He loves purple and absolutely rocks it, he was going to wear the steampunk type jacket but it was a lighter purple than the original Amazon pic and he liked how the suit jacket better matched the trousers. Definitely looked great and he came home happy that he had such a great night with his friends. Didn't ever think he would dare a silver haired look that was a last minute decision he came to me with earlier in the week and it worked a treat

That's a lovely pic to remember your sons special night.
In years to come you can look at that pic and remember all the davice (good and bad) you recieved when you posted on Mumsnet.

Glad he had a great time and that you got a lovely pic of the two of you together. I did think of this thread at my DD's prom. Her friends with all us mums following on behind like some kind of prom escort stopped off at a beautiful location before the prom itself so we could get some photos of them in their dresses. We also did a mums and daughters pic and I wished I'd considered my outfit a bit more. I looked fine but it's definitely a milestone moment and I could have put a bit more thought and effort into what I was wearing. I think the UK prom has developed into its own thing and the seeing them off is a big deal for parents.

This could well end up in the dailymail!
