Sick of “it’s too hot to eat people”

Anyone else surrounded by this performative nonsense. Both dh and his mum (staying with us as she has building work going on) pull this crap.

Yesterday we had scrambled eggs and toast for lunch. I snacked on sardines to hold me over to dinner. So not much food at all. Dh and MIL probably snacked more than I did. When I asked dh to go bbq the chicken I had marinated for dinner both he and his mum said they couldn’t possibly eat cause of the heat. Like wtf. We still need energy. MIL is not slim. It’s just bizarre and annoying.

Im a size 8 and still require dinner. Ordered food in for myself in the end.

I wouldn't be able to eat a whole MIL either. Heat or no heat.

HoppingPavlova · 27/05/2026 13:11

@DeposedPresident I'm I'm asssuming you are in Oz? I'm Australian.

Yep.

Did your family do the full Christmas roast at - Christmas? We did until my teens when finally my mother (I think) said fuck this for a laugh and we moved to cold seafood buffets.

Nope. No one was ever this silly🤣.
Xmas was always (and still is) cold seafood, cold ham, cold chicken, cold salads and pav and trifle for desert.

Did you write this when you got home from school?

Paganpentacle · 27/05/2026 13:12

Losing your appetite in the heat is performative?

You and they are used to it. In the UK we're not used to regular temps being past low 20s and many of us don't cope well with anything past 25°C.

Our bodies don't have a chance to adjust. One day it's 15°C drizzling, breezy and we've got our big coat on. Two days later there's no clouds, the air is still, it's 29°C and we're all overheating and melting 🫠 🥵🫠🥵 It's only been about 10 days since I've stopped turning the central heating on in the evening!

Depends on the country too. In countries with seasons (rather than hot year round) , the food does differ depending on the season. Summer always has more fruit, veggies , salads present.

PumpkinsAndCoconuts · 27/05/2026 12:23

Probably need to get them up to at least 75 Celsius (internal temp) 😅

That's not hard this week.

Dominoodles · 27/05/2026 13:14

Lol it's not performative, god forbid someone think differently from you

I've been having smaller cold food like sandwiches instead of hot dinners all week, it's completely normal

EverydayRoutine · 27/05/2026 13:14

Pity the poor cannibals.

Monteah · 27/05/2026 13:15

Just find it odd. Don’t hear this sentiment outside of the UK imo. A lot of the top countries with obesity are in hot climates

I like a good dollop of pity with my mint sauce.

This is the UK. This IS summer. And it's over by Friday.

[Bitter.. love the heat]

May is not summer. It is spring!

And this is very hot for spring. Even when it cools down it will still be above average for a lot of the country.

scalt · 27/05/2026 13:17

@Octavia64 i too thought of flanders and Swann. Ironic that that song is in the tropics, moments after the song moaning about British weather.

RedTagAlan · 27/05/2026 13:17

longtompot · 27/05/2026 11:56

Given a turkey takes a couple of days, I think a whole person might take at least 3 days, maybe 4 to be safe

In that case, won't the fingers go off before the big bits are defrosted ?

deplorabelle · 27/05/2026 13:17

If you suffer with hypoglycemia hot weather can actually make you hungrier because when your body dilates blood vessels to cool off it can make your blood sugar drop. This joyful phenomenon happens to me and is one of the many miseries of hot weather. Keeping well hydrated helps mitigate it but I can't completely control it because life requires me to go out in the blazing heat or sit in my roasting office working.

Lovely when people judge you extra hard for eating because they personally have lost their appetite

It's the air con!

I used to live in the midwest and worked outside. I would never feel like eating much of anything in the summer when i took my lunch, 10 minutes in the air conditioning and i'd be famished.

Do some finger food / wings a day early if you're worried, for a picky bits tea?

Northermcharn · 27/05/2026 13:19

They're saying it's too hot for them to eat. I'm sure they don't gaf if anyone else eats or not.

Flour, beaten egg and breadcrumbs.

Works for fish.

Someone has already explained this.

That's not what you said though. You said it was 'performative' when what you meant was you don't understand or experience it.

What do you mean you don't hear it?

I'm pretty sure people all around the world will have said they're too hot to eat at some point.

Do you take everything as a personal slight or is it only where your food intake is concerned?

basoon · 27/05/2026 13:21

My appetite is unaffected but I love my food

Us fat people are allowed to not eat sometimes, you know. We don't decline food to wind you up.

I'll bear that in mind when it's the end of days, but just a bit stuck on what condiments would go best with human meat? Ketchup or mustard?

Apparently it tastes a bit like pork.

hope that helps

Bestwishes23 · 27/05/2026 13:23

They didn't want to eat, so didn't. You did, so ordered a takeaway. What exactly is the issue?

TheDenimPoet · 27/05/2026 13:23

Some people genuinely lose their appetite when it's hot. I wish I was one of them but sadly I want masses of food no matter what the weather.

My ex just never got hungry when it was hot. Because we ate when we were hungry rather than just sticking to strict meal times, he would sometimes get to the end of the day and realise he hadn't eaten. It wouldn't cross his mind to eat something, whether he was at work or had a day off.

I really wish I was like that. I might not be a fat, then.
