Sick of “it’s too hot to eat people”

Anyone else surrounded by this performative nonsense. Both dh and his mum (staying with us as she has building work going on) pull this crap.

Yesterday we had scrambled eggs and toast for lunch. I snacked on sardines to hold me over to dinner. So not much food at all. Dh and MIL probably snacked more than I did. When I asked dh to go bbq the chicken I had marinated for dinner both he and his mum said they couldn’t possibly eat cause of the heat. Like wtf. We still need energy. MIL is not slim. It’s just bizarre and annoying.

Im a size 8 and still require dinner. Ordered food in for myself in the end.

My appetite has never changed with a change in temperature (I wish). My desire to cook generally does though aka can't be arsed. Salads don't really count.

Ultraalox · 29/05/2026 10:06

I voted YABU as I’m a hungry hungry girl but the last two days - no appetite.

Tinned sardines. Fancied something salty. Mixed the fish with coriander, olive oil chilli, lime and garlic. Ate with a couple of crackers and hot sauce. Shared with the dog (he had his plain ofc).

Oh yum! Added to my shop..

WeatherOrNothing · 29/05/2026 10:18

We had a delicious curry yesterday. I cooked it in the morning when it was cooler to be in the kitchen and sat down and had a great meal. All these ‘salad and picky bits’ brigade just annoy me!

Its more to do with food safety, arising before the days of refrigeration with spices having antibacterial properties which are needed more in hot climates.

That's interesting - a quick Google shows it's both: plus spicy food makes you sweat so then you cool down. I am more likely to fancy strong flavours in the heat, including spicy and salty.

Notsosweetcaroline · 29/05/2026 10:28

Not quite seeing the issue, it’s a bit drama llama to think you can’t put the oven on in the evening as it will heat the house. It won’t. You could easily have made dinner, eaten, and they could have had what they wish.

I don’t want to be ‘that’ person but I assume you mean he had plain sardines as garlic is toxic to dogs?

Nope, summer starts on June 21st.

ETA wait : actually it starts on June 1st or June 21st depending on which kind of summer

“So what happens after spring? Meteorological summer always runs from 1 June to 31 August. Astronomical summer begins at the summer solstice, around 21 June, when the Northern Hemisphere is tilted furthest towards the sun. The Royal Observatory notes that this is the longest day of the year, and in the UK it brings roughly 16.5 hours of daylight. For many people, this is the season that feels easiest to recognise because the days are long, gardens are full, and daily life moves more naturally outdoors.”

Meteorological Summer
Start Date: June 1
End Date: August 31
Definition: Used by climatologists and the Met Office, this divides the year into four equal three-month blocks to align with calendar months for simpler weather tracking.

Both are ok, I think. The Met office is using a more general approach rather than the astronomically accurate one.

Summer: the warmest season

Summer in the UK begins in June and is typically our warmest season, summer is the warmest season due to the northern hemisphere being tilted towards the Sun.

yes that’s right - it’s the same information in the quote and link that I already posted :)

ah right I see you’re highlighting what definition the Met uses!

well I am still sticking with the one that puts my birthday (first week of June) in spring purely for frivolous reasons lol

I’m sure both definitions are fine. Happy Birthday!

And also to hide the taste of meat that's paste its best

That is a racist trope, I’m afraid.

TheChosenTwo · 29/05/2026 20:05

I eat less in the heat, it’s not performative, im just less hungry. Usually drink even more water than I do when it’s not hot, so fuller from liquid too!

WhatYouWearing · 29/05/2026 20:06

When I can’t be arsed to cook I use the hot weather as an excuse. I’m not cooking in this heat, you need to buy a takeaway. Even in January.

I should have fact checked this before I posted. It is incorrect. An ex boyfriend told me this yonks ago!

MrsRonaldWeasley · 30/05/2026 08:36

I would put the "too-hot-to-eat" people in the same category as '"I couldn't eat another thing" people who have 2 sandwiches from an afternoon tea and declare it is "just so flilling" WTF!? Makes me feel like a pig for wanting eat more than the equivalent of one slice of bread!!!

quirkychick · 30/05/2026 09:03

I have quite a variable appetite, tbh. The heat can make it worse, or if I'm busy. It usually evens out, so I end up eating more sometimes, but I wouldn't be trying to guilt trip others. I had a massive dinner last night, as I hadn't been that hungry during the day. One meal is not always indicative of someone's overall appetite.

DiscoBeat · 30/05/2026 09:08

I agree with them - on Sunday we haven't had a lot of lunch but neither of us wanted to eat anything later. I did make something for the teens though!
I am relieved this was not about cannibalism!

dayslikethese1 · 30/05/2026 09:39

I don't think it's performative, lots of people aren't as hungry in the heat and esp not for hot food. As long as they weren't making you feel bad for eating its fine.

quirkychick · 30/05/2026 18:27

I definitely wouldn't want to eat a full roast dinner or fry up in the heat. I'm more likely to have a few light snacks or meal in the day and maybe more when it's cooler in the evening.
