Sick of “it’s too hot to eat people”

Anyone else surrounded by this performative nonsense. Both dh and his mum (staying with us as she has building work going on) pull this crap.

Yesterday we had scrambled eggs and toast for lunch. I snacked on sardines to hold me over to dinner. So not much food at all. Dh and MIL probably snacked more than I did. When I asked dh to go bbq the chicken I had marinated for dinner both he and his mum said they couldn’t possibly eat cause of the heat. Like wtf. We still need energy. MIL is not slim. It’s just bizarre and annoying.

Im a size 8 and still require dinner. Ordered food in for myself in the end.

I mentioned our sizes to emphasise the fact wanting to eat in hot weather is not gluttony.

Perhaps people bigger in size struggle with the heat more so dont feel like eating. People are different....why worry about who wants to eat or not...focus on yourself.

Squirrelsnut · 27/05/2026 13:25

Are you cross because their decision to not eat made you feel greedy? Many women feel they should eat less than their companions in order to be 'feminine'?
Or are you pissed off because DH ducked out of a chore you were relying on him to do? Because I can totally sympathise with that

They didn’t seem to say anything that suggested they were calling you a glutton.

Yet you were perfectly happy to suggest that there was something wrong with them for not wanting to Eat

Why is it so hard for you to believe that weather affects different peoples appetite differently? Why does it make you so angry?

In that case, won't the fingers go off before the big bits are defrosted ?

Get the butcher to cut it into joints before freezing ?

No. I ended up ordering fast food. Guilt free.

I barely eat a thing in hot weather never have. My appetite just disappears. I’m certainly not prone to performative nonsense either. Just how my metabolism works.

quirkychick · 27/05/2026 13:37

Not sure it has anything to do with size. I'm reasonably slim snd I quite often don't feel hungry in the heat. I drink lots of water and I might pick at light salty snacks like olives, nuts or dips - I assume the salt is for rehydration - or am hungrier later.

BauhausOfEliott · 27/05/2026 13:37

Monteah · 27/05/2026 12:04

Didn’t want the oven on heating the house up

But you were happy to make your husband stand outside and cook over burning coals in heatwave temperatures? If you wanted to barbecue some chicken, why didn't you just do it yourself?

Honestly, if someone ordered me to start firing up a barbecue right now I'd tell them to sod off.

What difference does it make to you whether someone else is hungry? You can, and did, sort your own dinner out, so what's your problem, exactly?

I'm not one for performative under-eaters but, by the sound of it, that isn't what your DH and his mum are at all. Loads of people don't have much/any appetite in hot weather. They didn't shun dinner to spite you; they genuinely weren't hungry. Do you want them to force food down themselves just to keep you happy?

Nobody cares what dress size you are.

youalright · 27/05/2026 13:40

I really wish I was one of these people where heat, stress or just forgot to eat stopped me eating unfortunately im one of them no matter what the situation i think about food from the second my eyes open

Faveway · 27/05/2026 13:40

Eating People:
Serve with a massive salad and some garlic bread on the side.
Tastes like chicken.

Gotback · 27/05/2026 13:44

Or feed them on plenty of garlic first. Like having a corn-fed chicken. But bigger obvs.

JustaDream · 27/05/2026 13:44

I'm size 6, petite, don't eat when it's hot.

I eat when the sun goes down and it's cooled off or first thing in the morning. Don't want to be sick to my stomach digesting food when it's hot.

I also don't drink alcohol when it's hot. It makes me feel sick and dehydrated.

My FIL is the same. He's the size of a barge.

I have a skin tag on my neck and walk with a limp.

What else do we need to share which is irrelevant to feeling sick in the heat besides our clothing size?

AuContrairePubicHair · 27/05/2026 11:30

Is there a temperature at which it's ok to eat people?

I came here to say this.

breastcancerpanic · 27/05/2026 13:49

OP - I think I understand why you mentioned your own size, and their size. My guess is that when they say 'it's too hot to eat' you feel like they are saying THAT YOU SHOULDN'T EAT. And if they were saying that, they would be quite wrong to say that! Of course you should eat if you are hungry.
Because (I'm guessing) you think they are implying that you shouldn't eat, you are defending yourself. You're saying - but they've been eating!! And I'm so slim!! I'm slimmer than they are - how can they be telling me that I'm wrong to eat!!
But the truth is, that they are (I guess) not telling you that you shouldn't eat. I say 'I guess' here because for all I know they are genuinely controlling people and I hope you'd know if that were the case, but that is unlikely. Far more likely, they are not telling you what YOU should and shouldn't do. You can see from this thread, everyone is saying 'they can decide what they eat, and you decide what you eat' - and your relatives are probably just similarly saying what they want to do.
I'm not quite sure why but I ended up I think where (I'm guessing) you are, thinking that I need to justify myself, and be good enough, and somehow measuring myself against other people, and trying to work out what it is that they think I should be doing, and then getting all upset because I interpret what they say as though they are e.g. telling me that I should be doing something that I think is unreasonable etc. I found it very difficult to act in a way that I wasn't sure would meet everyone else's approval.
Therapy helped me realise that this is genuinely not how everyone else thinks. And you can see it in this thread - people would get themselves some food and eat it non-self-consciously even surrounded by people saying 'it's too hot to eat'. That attitude is something I'm trying to work towards - and I don't know but maybe this is something for you too - the aim to be kind to yourself and (I hope) recognise that you are surrounded by people who love you and are not actually judging you when you make decisions for yourself that are best for you!

This is why punctuation matters.

You have to ensure that they're cooked properly.

EmeraldShamrock000 · 27/05/2026 13:52

Just find it odd. Don’t hear this sentiment outside of the UK imo. A lot of the top countries with obesity are in hot climates

In most hot climates, most people are a) used to the heat, b) live in cool, air-conditioned homes and c) often consume the vast majority of their food intake late at night when it's cooler.

Delicious. If any leftovers could then add some lentils to make MIL last until next weekend.

Pushmepullu · 27/05/2026 13:53

We see to eat more in the heat! When we are on holiday we seem to be capable of having a larger than normal lunch then a 2 course meal. We never refuse the little cakes or fruit the restaurants give out either.

OtterandaRock · 27/05/2026 13:55

People are not oysters. You don't have to wait for a month that has an 'r' in its name.

MyDeftDuck · 27/05/2026 13:55

“Ordered food in for myself in the end” .……..and I hope you fended them off with a cattle prod whilst you enjoyed your food.

My appetite does decrease in the warmer weather but I agree, we need to eat……..just smaller amounts of lighter food. Fluids are key and I find if I drink plenty of water I can manage a meal……..very little water and I feel crap, sickly, banging headache and no appetite!

suki1964 · 27/05/2026 13:55

Monteah · 27/05/2026 12:04

Didn’t want the oven on heating the house up

And for that type of meal Id not dream of dirtying the BBQ, Id have thrown them in the air fryer which is ideal for cooking drumsticks and wouldn't have heated up the kitchen let alone a whole house

UpperLowerMiddleClass · 27/05/2026 13:56

The people who loudly declare this (rather than just eating a bit less and getting on with lives) do seem very performative to me. Not least as in my experience they’re often the same people who then go on all inclusive holidays to 30C Mediterranean resorts and eat and drink non stop for two weeks!

VickyEadie · 27/05/2026 14:01

"It's too hot to eat" is not a sentiment I have ever understood (and I lived in Greece for several years, where summers are very long and VERY hot - zero impact on my appetite). I strongly suspect that if I arrived in hell I'd be asking for directions to the buffet.
