Sick of “it’s too hot to eat people”

Anyone else surrounded by this performative nonsense. Both dh and his mum (staying with us as she has building work going on) pull this crap.

Yesterday we had scrambled eggs and toast for lunch. I snacked on sardines to hold me over to dinner. So not much food at all. Dh and MIL probably snacked more than I did. When I asked dh to go bbq the chicken I had marinated for dinner both he and his mum said they couldn’t possibly eat cause of the heat. Like wtf. We still need energy. MIL is not slim. It’s just bizarre and annoying.

Im a size 8 and still require dinner. Ordered food in for myself in the end.

I lose my appetite in the heat and I’m a hefty size 16. It’s certainly not about performing some kind of tiny bird like appetite 🤣 I very much enjoy food, but I just don’t feel very hungry when the temperature feels like the arsecrack of hell. I’ll just have sandwiches or cereal I don’t fancy anything more than that. I don’t think this is unusual at all.

IPM · 27/05/2026 12:56

God, people are so weird about food and what others do/don't eat on Mumsnet.

If it's too hot to eat then it's too hot to eat.

It doesn't mean it's 'performative' 🙄

SnappyCat26 · 27/05/2026 12:56

Depends on how you like them - BBQing the relatives would do great on a sunny day, or put 'em in the fridge-freezer if you like 'em cold! 😂

xogossipgirlxo · 27/05/2026 12:57

Fair enough, maybe they craved something cold? I could not bear cooking and hot food in weather we had on Monday. Mentioning mil’s weight is rather odd

OtterandaRock · 27/05/2026 12:09

Turkeys are nasty farmed birds.
Would not touch them with a barge pole.

But people are usually free range 😁

I never eat people.

Do you @Monteah ?

Tip- If you'd closed the inverted commas after 'eat' it would make more sense.

ChampagneCharly · 27/05/2026 13:00

Hahaha!

AuContrairePubicHair · 27/05/2026 11:30

Is there a temperature at which it's ok to eat people?

180'c for 20 minutes a lb plus 25 minutes.

Anarchy99 · 27/05/2026 13:02

what is it with the slagging off of people who don’t want to eat or be in the heat? Why does it matter?

IPM · 27/05/2026 13:02

Monteah · 27/05/2026 12:16

I mentioned our sizes to emphasise the fact wanting to eat in hot weather is not gluttony.

No-one told you it was though.

This is purely down to you and how you feel about yourself and eating.

Waitingfordoggo · 27/05/2026 13:02

I don’t think I could fit a person on my BBQ unless they were very small. Also I think it’s probably not legal to BBQ people.

Jellybunny98 · 27/05/2026 13:03

I think this is just a different people thing. I have no appetite when it’s hot, my husband could continue to eat normally at any temp high or low, our daughter takes after him. All just different!

Sound like a you issue, tbh.

I lose my appetite when it's hot. My partner doesn't. I've never associated it with gluttony just difference.

How many meals can you make out of one person? If a MN chicken can feed a family of five for a week, an entire person must last a year, at least.

I'll bear that in mind when it's the end of days, but just a bit stuck on what condiments would go best with human meat? Ketchup or mustard?

rolloverbeethoven · 27/05/2026 13:04

Ds has pointed out that it was boiling hot in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and they had no trouble eating people.

If they’re not hungry, they’re not hungry. However if they kept snacking, or going back to the fridge or worse, asked for some of your food YANBU.

KnitWitsAnonymous · 27/05/2026 13:05

I love children but I couldn't eat a whole one . . .

Bit of apple sauce. Like pork.

I'd assume!

aquitodavia · 27/05/2026 13:05

People are just different. I can't eat much beyond salads right now, and I'm certainly not doing it performatively to annoy you! When I live in hot countries which I have done several times I also tend to lose at least half a stone pretty quickly for this reason.

Bushmillsbabe · 27/05/2026 13:06

If you wanted it cooked, then why not cook it yourself. I am happy with salads, sandwiches etc in this weather, but DH wants a hot meal, so he cooks it.

Well, it is too hot for bread sauce or apple sauce.

Mustard. Must be Colman's.

peenogris · 27/05/2026 13:07

Why didn't you just BBQ it yourself?

Mangochutney33 · 27/05/2026 13:09

oncemoreuntothebeachdearfriends · 27/05/2026 12:46

I had oxtail stew last night, chicken curry tonight.
I really can't understand not wanting hot food in hot weather.
I've lived in a hot country, & the locals eat the same sort of meals all year round.

You and they are used to it. In the UK we're not used to regular temps being past low 20s and many of us don't cope well with anything past 25°C.

Our bodies don't have a chance to adjust. One day it's 15°C drizzling, breezy and we've got our big coat on. Two days later there's no clouds, the air is still, it's 29°C and we're all overheating and melting 🫠 🥵🫠🥵 It's only been about 10 days since I've stopped turning the central heating on in the evening!

Cel77 · 27/05/2026 13:10

It's not performative for me. I've got IBS and the heat really messes up with my digestion.
I was bloated after a bit of greek salad and a small triangle of quiche, and felt really unwell. I love food any other time but it's hit me hard the last few days.

Ilovelurchers · 27/05/2026 13:10

If people are saying it for the sake of it or to make some kind of point, then yes that's silly.

But what if they are genuinely too hot to eat? I usually eat quite a lot, but haven't felt much like it. And when I went out for coffee for my cousin and had cake and some creamy frappe drink, it actually made me sick when I got home!

Maybe I had a bug or a bit of food poisoning, I don't know. Or maybe I was just genuinely too hot to eat?

Everyone's body responds to things differently I reckon. Doesn't mean people are lying, just because they feel something you yourself don't feel yourself.
