Sick of “it’s too hot to eat people”

Anyone else surrounded by this performative nonsense. Both dh and his mum (staying with us as she has building work going on) pull this crap.

Yesterday we had scrambled eggs and toast for lunch. I snacked on sardines to hold me over to dinner. So not much food at all. Dh and MIL probably snacked more than I did. When I asked dh to go bbq the chicken I had marinated for dinner both he and his mum said they couldn’t possibly eat cause of the heat. Like wtf. We still need energy. MIL is not slim. It’s just bizarre and annoying.

Im a size 8 and still require dinner. Ordered food in for myself in the end.

I’m like this - don’t see the point of food when it’s hot but could eat constantly, especially carbs, when it’s cold. People are different.

Bjorkdidit · 27/05/2026 11:52

You said they also snacked, so that could be why they weren't hungry. I want to eat real food not fill up on snacky rubbish, so sort myself out if I'm hungry and other people aren't.

How many meals can you make out of one person? If a MN chicken can feed a family of five for a week, an entire person must last a year, at least.

Not if you are inviting family to a spread/tea/buffet. Then you need 3/4 person each, and a terrine.

fabstraction · 27/05/2026 11:54

They don't have to eat, but I wouldn't like people acting shocked that I still have an appetite when they don't. I need to eat something at regular intervals throughout the day, regardless of the temperature.

I'd be annoyed that your DH wouldn't just BBQ the chicken for your sake and save the rest to eat cold or reheat, if that's typically his 'job', but if it will last until the next day it's not a big problem. (Unless he continues to make remarks about it being 'too hot to eat'.)

I tend to avoid eating people all year round

Even at Sunday lunch in a naice pub?

champagnePicnic · 27/05/2026 11:39

Do we defrost them the night before?

Given a turkey takes a couple of days, I think a whole person might take at least 3 days, maybe 4 to be safe

Xiaoxiong · 27/05/2026 11:56

I find that when it's hot people say they don't feel like eating, but when the food's in front of them they tuck in quite happily...

I think they really mean they don't feel like making anything, and also possibly that they're not hungry for anything too heavy.

MonsterasEverywhere · 27/05/2026 11:57

Appetite can change in warm weather. I'm much more likely to graze on food in this weather than have large meals. I especially don't fancy cooking too much in this heat so I tend to make lighter options and only use an air fryer so I don't heat the kitchen up too much.

In my Nan's day she would chuck them straight from the freezer into the pot with a fistful of salt. No nonsense about chili amd coriander. We never were ill.

Sovignyonblonksvp · 27/05/2026 12:00

Surely they’re actually saying, it’s too hot to be bothered cooking.
I still want to eat but the thought of having the oven on or standing by the hob stirring something is too much.
Salad, cold food, snacks, or takeaway all works for me.
It’ll be raining by Sunday so a few days of different meals is hardly a problem.

Toober · 27/05/2026 12:01

I find that the temperature does affect my appetite.

48 hours at least for safe defrosting

Wamid · 27/05/2026 12:02

I don't often know what is going to be for dinner, I'm the cook! Even when DCs were at home I would do what I fancied, within reason, for dinner on the spur of the moment and what was in the fridge at the time. It was always substantial in the evening and the menu was eat it or go out and get your own.

ChopstickNovice · 27/05/2026 12:02

I doubt it would be too hot to eat people if you were hungry enough

Monteah · 27/05/2026 12:03

it was a light meal. Chicken drumsticks, salad and bread

The bbq fire was too hot, why didn't you cook it indoors . Whats the relevance of mil not being slim and you being a size 8.

Didn’t want the oven on heating the house up

And there you have it. We take so much for granted these days.

I really hope you are referring to the turkey not the person!

Haha, you beat me to it!

And me! 😄

Mapletree1985 · 27/05/2026 12:06

You can make more meals out of OPs MIL than OP, it seems.

BudgetBuster · 27/05/2026 12:07

Monteah · 27/05/2026 12:03

it was a light meal. Chicken drumsticks, salad and bread

So you could have made it yourself?

Cherrytree86 · 27/05/2026 12:07

You being a size 8 is relevant how? @Monteah

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 27/05/2026 12:07

Why did he have to be the one forced to stand and cook the chicken over a hot BBQ though? Couldn’t you do it? ESP as you were the one who wanted to eat and you were the one who wanted to avoid using the oven.

You could easily have had the meal you planned!

So on a hot day we cook up the OP instead of the MIL.
