Sick of “it’s too hot to eat people”

Anyone else surrounded by this performative nonsense. Both dh and his mum (staying with us as she has building work going on) pull this crap.

Yesterday we had scrambled eggs and toast for lunch. I snacked on sardines to hold me over to dinner. So not much food at all. Dh and MIL probably snacked more than I did. When I asked dh to go bbq the chicken I had marinated for dinner both he and his mum said they couldn’t possibly eat cause of the heat. Like wtf. We still need energy. MIL is not slim. It’s just bizarre and annoying.

Im a size 8 and still require dinner. Ordered food in for myself in the end.

Nobody cares, really - NOBODY CARES!!!!!

CatA27 · 27/05/2026 18:05

You are probably a size 8 because you have a higher metabolism and burn food faster. Lots of people dont fancy eating when its hot, if you are hungry sort yourself out!

TorroFerney · 27/05/2026 18:06

Unless it's actually hot in your house then no I don't get it, but i eat the same food all year round and my child is currently heating up a tin of Scotch Broth.

Now seeing people smoke in hot weather - that makes me feel hot.

Fridaygirl1 · 27/05/2026 18:09

Lots of people find it hard to eat in the heat, especially hot food. Why would it bother you if they don't want to eat? I'm not sure why the odd comments about your MIL not being slim and you being a size 8 are relevant. Is it meant to be some kind of boast? Or are you worried that if you eat when other people don't, people might think you're greedy/fat? If so, I recommend just eating what you want, and letting others eat what they want without trying to make other people's food choices all about you.

survivingoutofspite · 27/05/2026 18:14

I like my food and the heat is dulling my appitite

Usernamenotav · 27/05/2026 18:15

I never eat people. Regardless of the temperature.

Northernlights19 · 27/05/2026 18:35

Monteah · 27/05/2026 12:16

I mentioned our sizes to emphasise the fact wanting to eat in hot weather is not gluttony.

Nahhh you didn't, we all know that wasn't the reason you mentioned it 😂

Blades2 · 27/05/2026 18:40

🤷‍♀️ it has been to hot for me and my kids to eat anything considered dinner. We’ve had salad sandwiches, cold meats and lots of ice lollies. Just because you’re not as affected by being overly warm doesn’t mean everyone is.

Monteah · 27/05/2026 15:19

I find the bbq awkward to operate. The lid is way too heavy and high for me. Told dh this when we were purchasing it and he told me not to worry as he is the one who likes barbecuing.

Do you not have a grill? Or am I unaware of a law saying drumsticks can only be cooked on a barbecue?

Lilypad789 · 27/05/2026 18:48

Yes it’s annoying. Husband should probably have discussed dinner with you more privately or not snacked as much, especially if you usually eat the same thing at the same time (as many couples do). I would have felt ever so slightly embarrassed that they were implying I was greedy by being hungry. I’m a cow bag though and would have said ‘well that’s annoying that you two have snacked all day and now you’re not hungry when we usually eat dinner together.’ If I have snacked too much and am not hungry I still make my OH and I dinner and just state that I’ll have mine later or tomorrow for lunch because it’s a routine thats been happening for 15+ years and neither of us would want to just sort ourselves out every day independently of the other (no judgement to those who do) but I bet if you said you aren’t hungry later in the week when your husband had been looking forward to something he would be disappointed.

And I also understand why you mentioned your size vs MIL’s size. I hate it when people say ‘you’ll never eat all that.’ I feel like telling them that they’re fat and I’m not. I don’t care how it sounds, they’re almost trying to shame you for being hungry whilst being more overweight than you, go figure.

hopingforabigchange · 27/05/2026 19:00

I'm with you OP. My family are like this. And it's the saying 'It's too hot to eat,' rather than 'I'm too hot to eat,' that particularly irks me 😂It's never too hot to eat as far as I'm concerned 😁

ForJollyViewer · 27/05/2026 19:54

Personally I am not as hungry when it's hot, but neither do I snack on a hot day as you MIL did, she was most likely less hungry by snacking combined with the heat.

sparklyblueberry2 · 27/05/2026 19:57

Why does what other people do bother you so much? It was 35c here the last two days and trying to entertain kids on half term, it’s fair to say no one had an appetite. Young kids eat when they are hungry not for fun and my kids refused any form of dinner last night. As long as no one is dehydrating, I think humans can go without food for a short time!

I find I want to eat less when it is hot and most people want cooler stuff like salads and fruit and cold meats.

There is probably some science behind it. You use up calories maintaing your body at 37C. The closer you get to that temperature, the less calories you need. That's why people in the antartic need to conusme massive amounts of calories.

Of course if you get very hot you sweat, so need water and salt to replace that.

Yes, I'm less hungry when it's hot and prefer salads

Isitevensummer · 27/05/2026 21:27

Voted that YANBU but also still chuckling at my first read of this threads title. It is always too hot to ear people!

Is there a temperature at which it's ok to eat people?

Whoa there Jeffrey Dahmer

If it's hot enough to make people smoke, I'd get the hell out of there!

I never, ever want to eat salads, fruit and (bleurgh) cold meats...

MsSmartShoes · 27/05/2026 22:45

I don’t have much appetite when it’s so oppressively hot. At normal temperatures I’m usually quite greedy.

What makes it funnier is that it seems to have gone over the OP’s head

GlomOfNit · 27/05/2026 23:11

It's really not 'performative' Hmm Many people don't want to eat much when it's stupidly hot. If you're in the SE/S, the temps this week probably meet that definition.

TheBirdintheCave · 27/05/2026 23:39

RegalDiamondMonster · 27/05/2026 15:11

I thought it must be a new meme or something!

It's the second quote mark that's in the wrong place rather than a comma needed.

Yep you’re right! It is clearly too hot for me to grammar 😆 I think I was reading it like she was addressing a group so using people as a substitute for ‘everyone’. ‘It’s too hot to eat, people!’

Oldandbored · 28/05/2026 06:40

fabstraction · 27/05/2026 11:54

They don't have to eat, but I wouldn't like people acting shocked that I still have an appetite when they don't. I need to eat something at regular intervals throughout the day, regardless of the temperature.

I'd be annoyed that your DH wouldn't just BBQ the chicken for your sake and save the rest to eat cold or reheat, if that's typically his 'job', but if it will last until the next day it's not a big problem. (Unless he continues to make remarks about it being 'too hot to eat'.)

He feels It's too hot to eat but ok to make him BBQ for OPs convenience ??

Surely OP could cook however they wished themselves.

Just bbq the chicken yourself? 🤷🏻‍♀️

She’s too teeny tiny to bbq apparently
