Sick of “it’s too hot to eat people”

Anyone else surrounded by this performative nonsense. Both dh and his mum (staying with us as she has building work going on) pull this crap.

Yesterday we had scrambled eggs and toast for lunch. I snacked on sardines to hold me over to dinner. So not much food at all. Dh and MIL probably snacked more than I did. When I asked dh to go bbq the chicken I had marinated for dinner both he and his mum said they couldn’t possibly eat cause of the heat. Like wtf. We still need energy. MIL is not slim. It’s just bizarre and annoying.

Im a size 8 and still require dinner. Ordered food in for myself in the end.

I just came on the thread to join in with the 'eating people' chat.

It's never too hot to eat people, but on weeks like this one I take mine straight from the freezer.

If they're high meat content, probably not, but if you're going for the full crackling experience, you'll need to singe all the hairs off first, stab repeatedly with a salad fork and massage in olive oil, Rosemary and sea salt - I think that's available from John Lewis cosmetics departments and Booths for those who live further north.

I'm both delighted and slightly nauseated with this. Excellent work 👍🏼

Take them out of the freezer for emergencies. As any good prepper kno.

You obviously read the title as I did!

No. I ended up ordering fast food. Guilt free.

Why didn't you just cook the chicken?

OtterandaRock · 27/05/2026 15:01

I cooked the chicken
But I did not cook the human bean 🎸

(To the tune of 'I Shot the Sheriff')

Yeah I may be annoyed if you feel he had agreed to do it then backed out considering you marinated the chicken in expectation of him grilling it. But it depends how hot he was and if he was feeling standing over a hot grill would be too much.

But the heat does affect people differently. The first time I traveled to a hot country I was 18 and lost around half a stone during my 6 week holiday because I wasn’t eating as much. I was already slim, but size is irrelevant.

I just couldn’t get annoyed at the fact that he and his mom were just not hungry. I don’t see why someone’s lack of appetite would bother you that much. And I say that as someone preparing to order a takeaway for dinner tonight after a heavy home cooked lunch earlier despite it being 27 degrees 😆

VikingLady · 27/05/2026 15:08

You could eat them. Then you won’t have to listen to them being irritating.

I stared at the title for ages trying to remember if there was a saying about eating people when it’s hot outside 😆 Commas are definitely important 😅

I thought it must be a new meme or something!

It's the second quote mark that's in the wrong place rather than a comma needed.

How many meals can you make out of one person? If a MN chicken can feed a family of five for a week, an entire person must last a year, at least.

Not if they have been on Mounjaro.

If you suffer with hypoglycemia hot weather can actually make you hungrier because when your body dilates blood vessels to cool off it can make your blood sugar drop. This joyful phenomenon happens to me and is one of the many miseries of hot weather. Keeping well hydrated helps mitigate it but I can't completely control it because life requires me to go out in the blazing heat or sit in my roasting office working.

Lovely when people judge you extra hard for eating because they personally have lost their appetite

Who has judged you? People should mind their own business whether someone has a smaller or larger appetite than them.

I have a couple of friends who have commented on how much I eat when we are out and I found it annoying. Not all the time but it’s happened more than once and next time I’ll probably call them out.

If I’m paying for my own food, and not eating theirs - it’s really not their business.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 27/05/2026 15:13

Funnily enough, people in countries that are habitually as hot as, or even hotter than what we’ve had lately, still eat normal meals! Even hot meals!

My Singaporean SiL doesn’t consider any meal a ‘proper’ one if it’s not cooked, and served hot.

Countries that are set up for hot weather and people who are used to it…

I'm a size 8 and it's been to hot for me to eat 🤷‍♀️ we are all different

Has OP answered why she ordered food instead of cooking the food she wanted?

I find the bbq awkward to operate. The lid is way too heavy and high for me. Told dh this when we were purchasing it and he told me not to worry as he is the one who likes barbecuing.

OP posts:
sprigatito · 27/05/2026 15:20

I imagine OP mentioned being a size 8 because they made her feel greedy for wanting to have dinner.

I have no problem with people feeling that they don’t fancy a proper meal in a heatwave - it varies for me depending on what I am doing - but pronouncing that “it’s too hot to eat” is a bit off. It makes anyone who is hungry feel a bit self-conscious about it, which is unnecessary.

WildLeader · 27/05/2026 15:30

champagnePicnic · 27/05/2026 11:39

Do we defrost them the night before?

Unless you’ve got one fuck of a microwave…

Delphiniumandlupins · 27/05/2026 15:36

I think the oddest thing is "snacking on sardines" between lunch (of scrambled eggs on toast) and dinner! I am as keen a snacker as anyone but I'm thinking biscuits, crisps, cake or ice cream. Sardines are surely quite filling as a snack?

Damn I miss Booths since I moved to the Midlands!

I am more interested that you snacked on sardines.

Fresh or tinned?
Straight out of the can? Was toast involved?

I am seriously impressed. Puts my bunch of grapes or yogurt in the shade.

Tinned sardines. Fancied something salty. Mixed the fish with coriander, olive oil chilli, lime and garlic. Ate with a couple of crackers and hot sauce. Shared with the dog (he had his plain ofc).

I feel like one of the many wonderful things of being an adult is that I have lots of autonomy. If it's too hot 'for me' to deal with proper meals then my fat body can choose to snack away as I like.

My husband is away this week and I got stuff in to make a chicken casserole thing. Stuck what I could in the freezer as the kids and I couldn't face any of that and we've been living off of various snacky things. None of us want to think about anything warm and luckily we have free will so we are doing what we like.

YourPearlPombear · 27/05/2026 15:45

I've lived in a far hotter country than the uk and never had the issue of being too hot to eat, but in the uk I do have it, its humid not just hot, I feel sticky and irritated, I just feel too hot to eat anything apart from an ice lolly or some snacks, I don't want to have an actual meal. I don't see how its annoying to know your own body and that you don't want to eat a full meal, for whatever reason.

shockthemonkey · 27/05/2026 15:46

Monteah · 27/05/2026 13:15

Just find it odd. Don’t hear this sentiment outside of the UK imo. A lot of the top countries with obesity are in hot climates

I disagree with this part. One of the first phrases I learned in Spanish was "el calor me quita la hambre". In Turkey they often said "hava yemek için çok sıcak" and everyone knew you were getting leftovers from the fridge at best.

I do agree that it was probably annoying, after all the prep you did, to hear that your DH and MIL were not interested in grilling and eating BBQ fare. They didn't hold up their end of the contract.

thinkingaboutipswich · 27/05/2026 15:49

There are some items it’s too hot to eat or make.

for example I was going to bake some cheese scones over the weekend and I couldn’t face putting the oven on, and no one would have eaten hot cheesy baked things at that point. We had lovely BBQ food, baked potatoes on the BBQ and salad, olives, cold meats etc.

Lourdes12 · 27/05/2026 15:52

im not hungry at all in this heat. The heat also makes me very inactive which means less hungry
