Sick of “it’s too hot to eat people”

Anyone else surrounded by this performative nonsense. Both dh and his mum (staying with us as she has building work going on) pull this crap.

Yesterday we had scrambled eggs and toast for lunch. I snacked on sardines to hold me over to dinner. So not much food at all. Dh and MIL probably snacked more than I did. When I asked dh to go bbq the chicken I had marinated for dinner both he and his mum said they couldn’t possibly eat cause of the heat. Like wtf. We still need energy. MIL is not slim. It’s just bizarre and annoying.

Im a size 8 and still require dinner. Ordered food in for myself in the end.

Tinned sardines. Fancied something salty. Mixed the fish with coriander, olive oil chilli, lime and garlic. Ate with a couple of crackers and hot sauce. Shared with the dog (he had his plain ofc).

Appreciate I'm missing the point of the thread but those sardines sounds really nice. I'm totally going to try that.

Anyway, back to the original question: my family don't seem interested in eating in this heat either. They certainly aren't being dainty either, we all unashamedly love our food, hot weather just kills lots of people's appetite.

Riapia · 27/05/2026 15:58

Hot weather affects people’s appetite in different ways.
Also their temperament.

pensionqueries · 27/05/2026 16:02

Urgh, psychologically I want to eat, but cant eat as Im too hot, I feel sicky and have a funny tummy ache in the heat. I can eat small snacky bits instead.

TheDevilFindsWorkForIdleMums · 27/05/2026 16:21

YABU. Because it's too hot to eat.

And this is official, written in stone because my ds whose nickname is Pacman due to his ability to eat his way round the kitchen declared it was too hot to eat yesterday......after contemplating ringing an ambulance and declaring a state of emergency all I could do was agree and put my planned chicken kebabs back in the fridge. We ate a bowl of cereal each in shocked silence around 10pm.

JustSawJohnny · 27/05/2026 16:21

I don't get why you think it's 'performative' as it's the case for many people.

Can you not just feed yourself and understand that people's bodies work differently in different situations?

RaspberryRiddle · 27/05/2026 16:24

I went out for dinner on one of the 30+ heatwave days and ordered boeuf bourguignon, mash and red cabbage - my appetite and food choices remain unchanged!

Saracen · 27/05/2026 16:25

Whose idea was it for your DH to barbecue on such a hot day? If it was your idea then that was very inconsiderate of you. If it was his idea then I can see why he'd change his mind, but it was his own poor planning so he'd better cook it up in the next few days before it goes off. Luckily it's now slightly less hot out.

AuContrairePubicHair · 27/05/2026 11:30

Is there a temperature at which it's ok to eat people?

🤣🤣🤣

phoenix72 · 27/05/2026 16:27

I often feel too hot to eat. I just have no appetite when it's hot and humid. It's not a judgement on people who can eat, I just don't feel hungry. It's perfectly normal and maybe the reason why people in hotter countries tend to eat later when it's usually cooler.

Ireallycantthinkofagoodone · 27/05/2026 16:28

How many meals can you make out of one person? If a MN chicken can feed a family of five for a week, an entire person must last a year, at least.

Uummmm - now, that surely depends on the size of the person you’re cooking, the size and greediness of your family. It’s going to take some working out.

HaveANiceFuckingDay · 27/05/2026 16:30

I had chicken and potato curry last night and we've got lamb chops and mash tonight. I did ask the family if they'd prefer cold food but no they were quite happy to eat what I cooked .
We do have salad but its on the ' i can't be bothered ' days out of sheer laziness not weather dependent

Boomer55 · 27/05/2026 16:30

I don’t eat people, but I’m too hot to eat anything more than a yoghurt or a sandwich.

itwillgowithoutahitch · 27/05/2026 16:31

I have eaten like a sparrow the last few days. No appetite at all.

It is too to eat hot food 🤣
I'm only eating salads, fruit and ice cream at the moment
Nope cannot stomach the idea of chips or curry or meat 🙃

toastandegg · 27/05/2026 16:46

The heat makes me feel a bit nauseous so I eat less, usually just cold salad or snacks, when I’m abroad we eat much later so I can manage more but that doesn’t work when I want the dc to go to bed at a reasonable time

worldshottestmom · 27/05/2026 17:03

I do find my appetite to be affected by the heat, but I just eat later instead. Currently eating a fat plate of bolognese, rice, cheese and frankly obscene amounts of garlic bread. Bulking in summer isn't for the faint hearted.

Cook up a storm and let the wet wipes complain.

EmmaB1309 · 27/05/2026 17:06

Well you felt the need to tell us how little you had to eat all day…….not performative at all.

But yeah, I agree with you. Very annoying.

DangerousAlchemy · 27/05/2026 17:13

YourPearlPombear · 27/05/2026 15:45

I've lived in a far hotter country than the uk and never had the issue of being too hot to eat, but in the uk I do have it, its humid not just hot, I feel sticky and irritated, I just feel too hot to eat anything apart from an ice lolly or some snacks, I don't want to have an actual meal. I don't see how its annoying to know your own body and that you don't want to eat a full meal, for whatever reason.

Yes this is how I feel. If I lived alone I wouldn't have turned my oven on this week. But my DH & DS wanted 'proper meals' so I still had to cook 🤷‍♀️ I live in SE and far, far too hot and sticky here for me this week. Was 32 degrees here Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. yuck

henlake7 · 27/05/2026 17:23

I wish I was one of those people, unfortunately though hot weather just makes me really snacky and I want to live on crisps and ice cream.
In winter Im far more likely to make healthy nutritious meals....summer just makes me want Magnums and ready salted crisps!😆

quirkychick · 27/05/2026 17:27

When I've been on holiday in hot climates, I've usually eaten lightly eg fish and salad for lunch and then eaten late in the evening when it's cooler. I want to eat lighter and more savoury stuff in the heat - not sure if it's related, but I generally feel pretty rubbish in the heat, anyway.

Daftypants · 27/05/2026 17:31

I don’t eat people at any temperature 😉
yesterday I wanted cold food , crisps and ice cream plus loads of water to drink .
But yes , I m hungry now but having a bad case of can’t be arsed cooking

Nochoiceofuser · 27/05/2026 17:33

We tend to have more 'picky meals' when it's hot, this morning I cooked a quiche and some chicken while it was cooler (get the full afternoon sun in our kitchen!) and will be doing some salad for everyone to help themselves to as much/little as they want, the other night I just had toast for my tea but Hubby and son made their own tea so they ate according to their appetite. If you were hungry but they weren't you could have cooked the chicken yourself, eaten what you wanted and stored the rest in the fridge.
I also feel the comment that "MiL is not slim" was irrelevant and came across as judgy, were you meaning that she could afford to miss a meal or that she is so fat that she needs to keep up her calories to have enough energy to move her body?

Missohnoyoubetterdont · 27/05/2026 17:34

She sighed, “It’s too hot to eat people today,”
But forgot where the punctuation should stay.
Now the comments all read,
“WHO exactly have you fed?”
While the dog licks sardines from its tray.

Amberlynnswashcloth · 27/05/2026 17:34

If they are already too hot then added heat, smell, smoke, hot food from BBQ might've been too much for them.

quirkychick · 27/05/2026 17:52

In the hot weather, we only have a barbecue in the evening - our garden is shady by then, so it's not unbearable. Whereas our kitchen is very hot, even worse with an oven on. I would be tempted by thr air fryer.
