AIBU to stop therapy after learning my therapist’s husband is Reform?

I live in a small town. I started having therapy maybe a year ago. I feel it’s been working for me and I like my therapist. However I realised today that she is (very very recently) married to a man who recently stood and won as a reform councillor in our local election. I detest reform. I’m married to an immigrant (EU citizen) and am delighted that my kids are dual nationals and have the option of travelling, working and living in the EU should they desire. I’m also very pro the transition to green energy. I have solar and drive an EV. Finally I cannot stand Farage and the political grift embodied by people like him and Jenrick and am dismayed by the harms caused by Brexit.

My therapist is also an EU national and is here under indefinite leave to remain - as is my wife.
Read a few interviews with her husband today and he spouts the usual anti EU, anti immigration, anti green transition rhetoric you’d expect from Reform. I don’t feel comfortable continuing therapy with someone who’s married to a reform politician, and am very surprised that she is comfortable with his views and by extension those of Farage.

Am I overreacting?

But we have spell check?

We also have MN moderators who will delete posters who criticise other posters in this way. You don’t know who you’re responding to - what their level of grammar/punctuation/spelling is, or whether they have a disability affecting their ability. It’s rude and it can be ableist.

Or anti Reform.

Many of these asylum seekers have unfortunately commit heinous crimes

Is it many or is it actually a small percentage? Do you have the stats?

Yes this is the bit that is really racist. Attributing a negative characteristic to everyone coming from a particular part of the world because of the behaviour of a small minority.

ByGraptharsHammer · Yesterday 14:09

Can’t we just ignore these pesky equality laws based on the ECHR about disability? I thought Reform were keen on that

This poster has already said she has dyslexia - two of the letters were transposed. Could you really not work out what they actually meant ?

ByGraptharsHammer · Yesterday 14:12

Can’t we have disability bants? Or is it just racial bants?

Applewisp · Yesterday 14:12

Maybe in therapy you could explore why you are so hostile and judgmental toward people with different opinions and views? This is called prejudice. Why are you so prejudiced? Do you believe thought should be dictated and controlled? Are you a fascist? Because you are sure sounding like one.

ThreadGuardDog · Yesterday 14:13

Allisnotlost1 · Yesterday 13:05

I was actually making a joke about the woeful understanding of fascism by multiple posters. I didn’t even notice your typo and I knew what you meant, which is why my reply to you focused on your failure to understand the term, not your spelling of it.

That’s not the way it reads.

Oh, okay. So trends and statistics among cultural groups aren’t a thing. Culture has nothing to do with attitudes and behaviours, Per capita crime statistics are meaningless. Not to mention what we can all see with our own eyes but are conditioned by imposed ideology to pretend we don’t see.

Poor little Reform supporters. All they want to do is vote through a referendum that decimates our economy and stifles our children's futures; shout their tits off about immigration policy that is both potentially devastating to thousands and economically self-defeating anyway; render the climate of the very Earth we live on uninhabitable; jump to conclusions about every damn crime that gets reported about how it must have been those horrible muslim asylum seekers (and then go strangely silent when they're wrong); go to marches to hear the likes of Tommy Ten Names spout vile, bigoted crap about their bogeyman du jour; vote for a party that openly plans to remove free access to healthcare, destroy the government's tax base and therefore all possibility of decent public services with it, and turbo-charge our already spiralling economic inequality...

And people won't even be nice to them and be their fwiends!

The far right insanity taking over the world at the moment is a revolting disease, and the people who openly and proudly attempt to impose it upon our futures can go wallow in their festering hole of self pity and do whatever they have to do. It's not our responsibility to make them feel better about their racism or their gullibility. Our responsibility as citizens and as parents is to fight back and salvage whatever sliver of hope for humanity we can.

I'm not going to tell you you should find another therapist, but that's what I'd be doing. And I'd tell her exactly why.

What a condescending pile of garbage.

Party wise, they hate brown people. They wheel out a few misguided token people.

They don't hate brown people. Restore arguably do.

Nigel Farage has actually praised British Hindus for their hard work and educational drive.

It's not about tarring everyone with the same brush but it it a fact that Afghans are 22% more likely to commit sex crimes than those UK born. The government tries to hide this. The Times found this out with FOI after many requests.

Do you know any people of Middle Eastern origin in real life or do you get all your information from rage bait social media?

I was an adult living in London during the IRA mainland bombing campaign. All the IRA were Irish but they were a tiny percentage of the Irish population as a whole. I was never prejudiced against Irish people. I have known people from msny ethnicities and religions as friends, colleagues or in any number of situations. I have not formed prejudices on the basis of ethnicity.

But we have spell check?

Standard spell check isn’t particularly helpful for users with dyslexia, who often spell words phonetically. If a misspelling is too far from a standard word it won’t be recognised so the correct spelling won’t be offered. It’s also really poor at catching ‘real word’ errors, which is very often a feature of dyslexia, involving transposing letters - for example typing ‘form’ when they mean ‘from’ - pretty much what this poster has done here. It’s not good on picking up correctly spelled words in the wrong context either - such as ‘there’ and ‘their’.

I’m not the one who pulled pp up on the typo so quite why you’re chasing me down to argue about it I have no idea.

Why is it rage bait?

If the therapist is a member of the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists, they are obliged to follow the code of conduct, which centres obligations around tackling bias and discrimination.

Why do they have to "tackle" bias and discrimination? You mean they have to treat all their clients equally. This is getting even more bizarre.

Only Hindus?
What about the Sikhs,Muslims and atheist brown people?
Don't they have educational drive and work hard?
Wait didn't Farage like making gas hissing noise to jews and
he subjected black and ethnic minority students to racist abuse, including telling them to "go back to Africa" or "go back home.

If that isn't HATING brown people kindly explain what is?

I am pretty sure that finding was found to be flawed and the source was not from FOIs by the Times, but a series of FOIs by an individual who then extrapolated the 22% figure. I can't remember his name, but he has an agenda.

Is that the same hissing noises to Jews that pro Palestinians make?

But what if the therapist's spouse is a woke, snowflake lefty? Could be a dilemma.

My husband is a lefties and I vote Reform. We get on fine because we accept each others point of view. I'm also a therapist of 33 years and have seen many left leaning clients but I wouldn't dream of cancelling them.

How do you get through life?

Much more easily since realising that I don't actually need to waste any of my time or energy on racists and xenophobes, thanks.
