AIBU to think this dinner spread will be enough for nine?

Nine people for dinner tomorrow, 6 adults, 3 kids. It’s going to be really hot. 5 of the guests will have travelled some of the day.

I’ve actually been unwell this week so have relied on M&S to do the actual work. DH isn’t sure my planned spread is going to feed everybody so I’d like some opinions

I have bought:
2 quiches (one bacon and cheese, one cheese and onion)
2 packets hot flaked salmon
Ingredients for big Greek style salad (cucumber, tomatoes, red onion, feta etc)
Big bag of green salad
2 big pots of pasta, pesto and pine nut salad
6 sausage rolls
Big bag of M&S wotsits
Big bag of M&S bacon crisps
Huge double punnet of strawberries
Meringue nests
Cream
oh and cake

The sausage rolls and crisps are for whoever wants them but I obvs had the kids in mind picking those - I know all three kids like these things and eat them.

So that’s it. I think it’s enough. DH suspicious and thinks we might need ‘extras’.

Over to you Mumsnet (don’t worry, I’m braced for criticism and I can take it!)

Yes my parents are both silent generation, they would not eat anything foreign - oh i tell a lie, they would sometimes go to an Italian restaurant and have canneloni for a starter. Rice was for rice puddings. My mum would also not eat quiche, smoked salmon or a sausage roll or pizza or garlic bread. She is batshit obviously.

Those people were wise - they knew that Northern European people are meant to eat Northern European food, not 'street food' or 'kimchi' or suchlike. They had wisdom.

Yerroblemom1923 · Yesterday 18:16

OMG! They didn't eat ALL the sausage rolls! Proving my earlier point. 6 was indeed enough for 9 people.
Glad you survived it, OP.

If you knew my mother you would not be describing her as wise. She lives off Ryvitas and omlettes made in the microwave and has not used her oven yet in her new house - she has been there 7 years......

The no curry or whatever is just racism to be honest.

Ok, so maybe I need an extra quiche and maybe some continental meats? Hummus and veg?

Yes. I'd add another quiche and some cooked ham/ meats as you say

Definitely more quiches or pizzas . Unless they all eat like birds ! The rest sounds OK though . I'd rather have too much than too little .

Oops, soz, just read its over 🤭

The salmon of unwisdom hath spoken...

Edited

I had no idea she was not only wise, but super clued on - there is very scarce genetic evidence, if any, of humans being adapted to eat a cooked diet - hence mega brain for not using her oven. I can't comment on the microwave though. But fact remains - if it has not been growing around us/our ancestors for the past several hundred years, this is not our food.

This entire thread could have been much shorter, there was no mention of a packet of Starburst.

Letskeepcalm · Yesterday 18:36

Op, well done. Some folk are just nasty.
But I think you've got a lush sense of humour in some of your responses 😆
Hope enjoyed the gathering

Yes the Opal Fruits saved the day.

Remindmeofthebabee · Yesterday 18:37

I bought one of those big punnets of strawberries today and it made me think of this thread so I counted how many in the punnet. There was 14. I ate 7 with Greek yoghurt.

When I’m better I will definitely post recipe, I had to adapt it and wrote it long hand

Potatoe salad recipe too please

busymomtoone · Yesterday 18:55

I think if everyone loves quiche and salad you’ll be fine - but to have less than one of each for everyone is a disaster waiting to happen - you can’t assume only kids will take sausage rolls , not that they’ll confine themselves to one !! I wouldn’t buy more quiche, just cut up v small ; but go for bread, dips, crisps/ tortilla chips etc.

Foodylicious · Yesterday 18:56

Hope you had a good day OP and feel better soon.
Well done got getting your post to almost 1000 comments (about the inadequacy of quiche and the apparent necessity of 🧀 😆).

BleedinglyObvious · Yesterday 18:57

@busymomtoone , your post was the 989th post on the thread. Read the OP's updates.

WimbyAce · Yesterday 18:57

I'd have been all over the Starburst!

TerfOnATrain · Yesterday 18:59

Bloody hell OP, I’ve loved this thread. Well done for taking on genuine suggestions and dealing with the bat shit with good humour and a thick skin.

Please, please can I see a pic of the final spread 🙏

ps, I love quiche and strawberries

geminicancerean · 24/05/2026 17:40

I made it. It’s in a nine inch tin and has three layers. It’s about 6 inches high. But I’m sure somebody will come here and tell me that their family of 3 would finish it off.

I'd say it would cut into 6 slices, maybe 8 at a push

TheQuickSloth · Yesterday 19:10

Well this was... a ride. "You need two cakes for nine people" was a highlight.

GooglieWooglyWooglyWooglyWoo · Yesterday 19:10

More sausage rolls, maybe some sandwiches? It gives more options if people don't like quiches and hot salmon (these can be an acquired taste)

Many of us don't like them. Just as we don't like pasta salad. I dread to think what @geminicancerean's guests are saying about her catering. They probably all stopped for food on the way home.

Update, DDad has arrived with quiches (ha fuck you quiche haters), pork pies and a trifle!

C’mon OP you know you have form, of course your poor dad isn’t passive aggressive, he’s just making sure he doesn’t go home hungry 😂
Anyway, where’s the lush cake? You’ve used his trifle and kept the cake for yourself haven’t you….
