AIBU to think this dinner spread will be enough for nine?

geminicancerean · 24/05/2026 17:07

Nine people for dinner tomorrow, 6 adults, 3 kids. It’s going to be really hot. 5 of the guests will have travelled some of the day.

I’ve actually been unwell this week so have relied on M&S to do the actual work. DH isn’t sure my planned spread is going to feed everybody so I’d like some opinions

I have bought:
2 quiches (one bacon and cheese, one cheese and onion)
2 packets hot flaked salmon
Ingredients for big Greek style salad (cucumber, tomatoes, red onion, feta etc)
Big bag of green salad
2 big pots of pasta, pesto and pine nut salad
6 sausage rolls
Big bag of M&S wotsits
Big bag of M&S bacon crisps
Huge double punnet of strawberries
Meringue nests
Cream
oh and cake

The sausage rolls and crisps are for whoever wants them but I obvs had the kids in mind picking those - I know all three kids like these things and eat them.

So that’s it. I think it’s enough. DH suspicious and thinks we might need ‘extras’.

Over to you Mumsnet (don’t worry, I’m braced for criticism and I can take it!)

Well it’s actually ‘tea’ because my family are working class and use that phrase and also have no issue helping themselves to bits.

But I forgot a pretty important addition!

I have two bags of miniature jersey royals and am going to make potato salad (with boiled eggs, mayo and spring onions) with one bag and boil the other bag and roll them in butter.

Forgot to mention the spuds!

Yum

Lifeomars · Yesterday 11:29

I'd serve that for 4-6 people and would add french sticks, cheese, grapes and maybe some mini cakes. Need a fair bit more for 9

I've nominated for classics..

Me too😊

You have been an absolute trooper @geminicancerean to have engaged with so many having trouble with their reading comprehension skills while feeling so poorly. Your humour (and restraint), with a little GCSE maths thrown in, has been wonderful 🙌🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I hope the meds are working and that you will feel much better soon❤️‍🩹
P.s. please can I come to your next get together as your menu is right up my street, especially the enormous delicious cake 🍰😋

At this rate OP will have served and eaten the buffet and people will still be coming on to tell her it’s not enough food!!

I think MN need to change it so that when there’s 100 posts on a thread and someone posts on it for the first time it makes you read all the OP posts before you can add anything

DappledThings · Yesterday 11:32

Still nearly 150 opportunities for people to join the thread, be arrogant enough to assume nobody in 850 comments so far has suggested their genius idea of adding in some meats and cheeses, berate OP for not acknowledging the suggestions and entirely miss that the event is cancelled.

Will we get to the full 1000? How many more people will misundersthad how much cake was made? The game is on.

By the way the last BBQ we went to had the following food - a burger was laid out for each of the kids and every parent dressed them then the kids were sent to play in the end of the garden where there was chopped up fruit and potato wedges for them to help themselves. They had some popcorn later in front of the TV.

@Goditsmemargaret did everyone clap?

🤣🤣🤣

Forty85 · Yesterday 11:34

This threads wild. Hope you feel better soon op.

Ohdearnotthisagain · Yesterday 11:34

Ok so you also have carbs and potatoes.

I would also get ingredients for some kind of substantial grazing platter to start. If you are ordering M&S definitely get some of their lovely dips, crackers and pre cut vege sticks.

oh they also do prosciutto wrapped mozarella sticks ready to go. So good.

The kids have chips so that’s cool.

I could live on M&S snack food god help me. Every time we go back I make DH take us there to stock up. Australian stuff isn’t nearly as good.

ForeverDelayedEpiphany · Yesterday 11:35

I think the OP's food sounds good, perhaps not quite enough but certainly a nice selection.

My DM is an excellent hostess and when she has catered for family (about 10 of us), she did chicken wings, pasta salad, baguette and lots ot cheese, a huge salad, sausages, new potatoes for the main course.

Starter was usually some samosas, onion bhajis, crisps and dips etc. Then puddings would be a cheesecake, ice cream and strawberries, and maybe another gateau type thing. I think this amount and selection of food was ample for about 9 or 10 of us, including two young children and a teenager.

I would do something similar, OP, and i definitely think if you do a selection like this, it'll be fine.

Hope you're feeling better today too. 💗

Cancel the cheque buffet.

Oh that's right, SHE ALREADY DID.

Goldengirl123 · Yesterday 11:36

No

PorkPieForStarters · Yesterday 11:38

This thread is incredible, have very much enjoyed everyone's bonkers posts!

OP it sounds like you have it under control and everything will be delicious. Another plea for the cake recipe please (but I'll do eighteen layers, because I have three people to feed, obviously 😉).

Hope you feel better, and have a great day!

@MatriarchCaz i think the salmon issue was flakes.
What do you do with just flakes ?

Put them in quiche

ForeverDelayedEpiphany · Yesterday 11:42

Just seen buffet is off (my bad!) 😅

Enjoy OP, your replies have been brilliant. I read through most of them and chuckled at your good humour. 👍

Oh definitely get 10 bags of new potatoes, 15 punnets of strawberries and 50 sausage rolls next time...alongside baking 3 cakes and a huge selection of cheeses.💪😉😘

StressedLP1 · Yesterday 11:42

For god sake OP, I don’t like pizza because I’m gluten and lactose intolerant. What about ME? 😡. Just make the goddamn chili because, as someone else suggested, it goes with anything, including quiche and potato salad, regardless of the fact that none of your guests will eat it. Why are you refusing to listen??

geminicancerean · 24/05/2026 17:19

I do want to know the answer! This is all very helpful!

Come on Op, being the host who sends their guests home hungry really isn’t who you want to be.

This thread made me dream of mountains of strawberries, have planted some this weekend to feed the hoardes.

Caveat my ND 7 year old does eat mountains of fruit but I recognise this is not the norm.

BibbityBobbityBuggerit · Yesterday 11:50

@geminicancerean any chance of the cake recipe, please? Mango and coconut sounds awesome!

Hope you're feeling a bit better and enjoy your family birthday celebration x

It’s made me think back to my childhood - my grandad had to most amazing garden with raspberries and strawberries and cherries and tomatoes and anything else you can think of. When we visited for the summer we would just gorge on the fruit! Happy days

rolloverbeethoven · Yesterday 11:53

YABU for making me even hungrier than I already was, and even unreasonabler for posting photos of some of my favourite food. In defence of boomers though, there are loads of foods that I used to love and can't eat now, slight allergies in my youth seem to have turned into full blown "call an ambulance" situations now, so give them/us some slack. Look after yourself OP, please don't wear yourself out too much (although it sounds like you already might have).

The buffet is off today, my fever has dropped but I’m still very sore and tired.

We’re getting pizza. One 9.5 inch should do everyone, right?

Don't be gluttonous, a 9in square pizza will be plenty. Then you can have the leftovers the next day. But I don't like olives, why on earth are you buying pizza with olives?

Definitely, with leftovers👍

@geminicancerean I hope you feel better soon and are able to enjoy time with your family. You've made me giggle a lot and shown incredible patience with some of the bonkersness on this thread!

zingally · Yesterday 11:59

Nowhere near enough for a dinner.

Fine for a "snacky bits" table to go with drinks, but as a dinner? Not even close. I'd happy share an average size quiche with my DH, and a bag of salad, and call that a "light dinner".
How about adding some chicken legs, sausages, or chicken goujons? Something protein-y to bulk it up a bit. Because apart from the salmon (which not everyone likes) and sausage rolls (which you don't have enough of), it's basically a vegetarian meal, which isn't everyone's vibe.

OP I'm sorry to hear this and hope all of our wild replies haven't contributed too much to how you feel. You were a star to keep responding to all of the madness.

DH and I were meant to be going for an afternoon tea tomorrow for our anniversary. Booked before we knew how hot it would be. Have managed to move it to Wednesday when will be a lot cooler.

Point being we will now need food for tomorrow and this thread has left me wanting a buffet.

Now the question is - how much do we need for 2 (greedy) adults?!
