AIBU to think this dinner spread will be enough for nine?

Nine people for dinner tomorrow, 6 adults, 3 kids. It’s going to be really hot. 5 of the guests will have travelled some of the day.

I’ve actually been unwell this week so have relied on M&S to do the actual work. DH isn’t sure my planned spread is going to feed everybody so I’d like some opinions

I have bought:
2 quiches (one bacon and cheese, one cheese and onion)
2 packets hot flaked salmon
Ingredients for big Greek style salad (cucumber, tomatoes, red onion, feta etc)
Big bag of green salad
2 big pots of pasta, pesto and pine nut salad
6 sausage rolls
Big bag of M&S wotsits
Big bag of M&S bacon crisps
Huge double punnet of strawberries
Meringue nests
Cream
oh and cake

The sausage rolls and crisps are for whoever wants them but I obvs had the kids in mind picking those - I know all three kids like these things and eat them.

So that’s it. I think it’s enough. DH suspicious and thinks we might need ‘extras’.

Over to you Mumsnet (don’t worry, I’m braced for criticism and I can take it!)

I hope you feel better soon.

Maybe some strawberries would help? 😉

@MatriarchCaz i think the salmon issue was flakes.
What do you do with just flakes ?

You’re right, I should have gone to Alaska, caught a whole one, gutted it, smoked it and served it on 2000 blinis.

Do people really eat a massive curry on a BH monday in May when its going to be 30degrees??

This thread is madness, and I have thoroughly enjoyed it.

OP i am fully invested and would love to see the cake, it sounds amazing.

Edited

We're actually having chicken and vegetable curry for dinner today...not a massive one though...and with a side salad 🤪 my family is food as normal 😆

Update, DDad has arrived with quiches (ha fuck you quiche haters), pork pies and a trifle!

One has already popped up since you posted.

149 to go...

I’m enjoying this, in a twisted kind of way. Now I see the kick kinky priests get from self flagellation.

@Kittybway What do they eat in India and other S asian countries every day? Three guesses.

I appreciate the effort you're making here, but I think your scaling of wild Alaskan salmon to blinis is on the extremely tight side. I'm not an expert, but I reckon another order of magnitude is needed. Could you catch and smoke another 9 whilst you're there?

This is really confusing me, normally mumsnet posters make one chicken last for 4 meals, now apprently we need roast chicken and all the food OP has, plus another load of sausage rolls and potatoes 😂.
I think the original menu was fine, I would maybe have added some bread but OP said she would do that many pages ago...

Well exactly. She was feeding 3 kids, 2 old people and 4 adults. There was a delicious sounding cake that would have fed 18 as well as meringue nests and marinated strawberries for desert. So there’s 3 servings of desert each. There was a Greek salad, a leafy salad, over a kilo of potato salad by the time you’ve added the egg annd mayonnaise (which sounded delicious) and almost a kilo of pasta salad. So that’s plenty of salad for the guests in question. 9 young adults fresh from an afternoon on the beach, probably not, but that’s not who was coming…. Quiche and sausage rolls are not exciting, but the OP knows her guests. All that was really needed addition was some crusty bread, cheese and charcuterie to go with the salmon and crisps IMO. Those suggesting chilli, 2 roast chickens, jacket potatoes, pizza and lasagne clearly hadn’t understood the brief,or the guest list. Or the fact there’s a heatwave.😂

How big should this new cake be?

I mean, I have a 9inch tin but apparently a three tier 9inch cake with frosting and fruit isn’t sufficient for 9 people. I’ll need to buy three more packets of butter because that’s how much went into this one.

If you bake you will know that a 9inch three tier sponge is big.

I regularly bake cakes that size - it’s big, but not 16 people big. It might be alright for 9, but I’d still get another dessert in I think for variety.

I hope the OP gets the cake recipe in on this thread.

And also that she gets the last word, the actual 1000th post!

Don’t worry I would make a new thread. Anyway DDad is outside playing with kids in hot tub and I'm in front of a fan with a Coke.

The what now? How is it stingy?! I'm so confused. Even if it wasn't scorchio, why isn't that enough food for one meal?! I'm a greedy bastard asking this, genuinely interested!! 😃

I think it's because whilst the total amount of food might be completely fine if being plated up and everyone was going to eat a bit of everything, this is a buffet. If Uncle Steve goes first and has 2 sausage rolls because he doesn't fancy quiche today, and then Aunty Peg fills her plate with a full lunch portion of pasta salad and salmon, the guests near the end won't get much.

Easilyforgotten · Yesterday 13:27

OP this is the most amusing thread I have read in a while. You are very entertaining and good humoured, despite the abject nonsense being thrown your way. I hope you feel better soon, and please will you bake me a cake? Doesn't matter if it's in feet, cm or potatoes, it sounds absolutely delicious 😊!

AlmostAJillSandwich · Yesterday 13:28

The only thing there i'd eat is the pine nut salad, and the tubs of those aren't big, one tub wouldn't be enough for one person as their dinner.

It’s a mango coconut layer cake. Made with French butter (browned) and a shitload of ganache. It really amuses me that people think it’s small because my husband laughed his head off at how huge it is. I’m not going to the garage fridge to take a pic because I just took 2 cocodamols and am feeling a bit groovy.

How is your three layer nine inch cake only 6 inches tall? The one I usually do is about 9 inches. It looks ginormous but it doesn’t last long!

Agree. Fuck drumsticks, they have no place on my table.

My kids wouldn’t eat drumsticks and I don’t really like them either. I do, though, love wings. Hope it’s all going well.

Ah, I see it’s cancelled. Hope you feel better soon. Pizza delivery to the rescue.

My kid has ARFID and would starve if I used your method. But thanks for your opinion.

Not sure you read that properly.

I totally appreciate some children have challenges but again that would make it ARFID friendly not child friendly
