AIBU to think this dinner spread will be enough for nine?

Nine people for dinner tomorrow, 6 adults, 3 kids. It’s going to be really hot. 5 of the guests will have travelled some of the day.

I’ve actually been unwell this week so have relied on M&S to do the actual work. DH isn’t sure my planned spread is going to feed everybody so I’d like some opinions

I have bought:
2 quiches (one bacon and cheese, one cheese and onion)
2 packets hot flaked salmon
Ingredients for big Greek style salad (cucumber, tomatoes, red onion, feta etc)
Big bag of green salad
2 big pots of pasta, pesto and pine nut salad
6 sausage rolls
Big bag of M&S wotsits
Big bag of M&S bacon crisps
Huge double punnet of strawberries
Meringue nests
Cream
oh and cake

The sausage rolls and crisps are for whoever wants them but I obvs had the kids in mind picking those - I know all three kids like these things and eat them.

So that’s it. I think it’s enough. DH suspicious and thinks we might need ‘extras’.

Over to you Mumsnet (don’t worry, I’m braced for criticism and I can take it!)

I think I’d add a little more, have you got somewhere close by you could nip too first thing, Aldi have some lovely tapas bits at the moment, or some nice cooked meets and some new potatoes, pate, fresh bread.

Wickedlittledancer · 24/05/2026 17:14

Um no your husband is right, you’re not even close 6 sausage rolls between 9? 2 bags of crisps? I punnet of strawberries. You need a lot more.

It’s a very big punnet

Haha I love that everybody suggested more bread and cheese 🧀

Yes, I'm always happy with a bit of nice crusty bread and some cheese. 🥖🧀

tiramisugelato · 24/05/2026 17:15

Nowhere near enough food. You need to at least double what you've got and add extras.

Six sausage rolls for 9 people? I'd be looking at at least 18.

NotTheOrdinary · 24/05/2026 17:15

Rolls or cut up french bread. Cheese, another quiche and some more sausage rolls.

geminicancerean · 24/05/2026 17:15

Brasslightsforthewin · 24/05/2026 17:14

3 quiches between 9 people? No! Pp is right, add some pizzas.

Kids won’t eat the quiches and one adult family member doesn’t like quiche, but I do see your point

Op, honestly no.

Oh OP. No. You need at least 4 punnets of strawberries, ideally more.

geminicancerean · 24/05/2026 17:14

Well it’s actually ‘tea’ because my family are working class and use that phrase and also have no issue helping themselves to bits.

But I forgot a pretty important addition!

I have two bags of miniature jersey royals and am going to make potato salad (with boiled eggs, mayo and spring onions) with one bag and boil the other bag and roll them in butter.

Forgot to mention the spuds!

Those tend to be small bags, so I’m guessing that will also be a small potato salad. But potato salad is a side, not the main course.

NotTheOrdinary · 24/05/2026 17:17

The potatoes will help to bulk it out.

Brasslightsforthewin · 24/05/2026 17:17

Whatever meal you call it, what you’ve listed, including the potatoes, isn’t enough. But, you apparently think it is, even though everyone on here has said it’s not. Why ask if you don’t want to know the answer?

It’s mini jersey royals, so unlikely to pad it our much,

Tsundokuer · 24/05/2026 17:17

I think you need some protein and carbs rather than more veg - at the moment there is a quarter of a quiche each with a tablespoon of salmon and whatever feta is on the Greek salad - 3 baguettes and some cheese and or charcuterie.

SomethingFun · 24/05/2026 17:17

1/3 of a quiche, 1/3 of a tray of hot smoked salmon flakes, salad, and a strawberry meringue per adult for dinner is clearly not very much at all. Crisps and sausage rolls for the dc for a dinner isn’t very much either. Maybe a lunch? I’d go back and get a couple of pizza deals as well and some dips and things to dip in them. It’s always better to have too much than not enough if you have guests and you can afford it.

Sparkletastic · 24/05/2026 17:18

No to more quiche. Yes to cheeseboard, crudités, dips. Particularly kid friendly options.

Wickedlittledancer · 24/05/2026 17:18

Op if it’s a budget issue buy chicken thighs, assume min two per person and a few extra, and roast them.

of the big pots of pasta you mean the ready made ones, then you need several

I add boiled eggs with soft yolks. I can stretch it I think. My potato salad is fucking delicious.

You need about 50% more stuff, I reckon.

This!!

Notarsed · 24/05/2026 17:19

Bloody hell, your guests will go home starving! Nowhere near enough. At the very least you need 2 extra packs of sausage rolls and 1 extra bag of crisps. I'd also serve a couple of pizzas, garlic bread, cheese and crackers

MegMortimer · 24/05/2026 17:19

Yes to you need 50% more stuff.

I do want to know the answer! This is all very helpful!

I'd buy some some nice bread, some sliced meat and maybe a few packs of mini party foods supermarkets sell.

Teanbiscuits33 · 24/05/2026 17:20

It doesn’t look enough to me, 2 pots of pasta between 9? Pasta gets eaten a lot at a buffet style dinner. There should be at least enough for everyone to have a reasonable portion of everything, so nine people means at least 9 sausage rolls but probably more. Cut the sausage rolls in half in they are big ones.

You need to buy more food overall, it’s better to have too much than not enough. Anything that gets left can go in the fridge if you’re worried about waste.

Bimblebombles · 24/05/2026 17:20

I’d add some chicken skewers, garlic bread and a cheeseboard

miaCara · 24/05/2026 17:20

Probably fine if all of those eating belong to the house but not if most are guests. I would include a lot of cold meats + cheese to fill plates up. A miserly slice of quiche and a bit of salad wont cut it for most folk who are out for their tea.
