AIBU to think this dinner spread will be enough for nine?

geminicancerean · 24/05/2026 17:07

Nine people for dinner tomorrow, 6 adults, 3 kids. It’s going to be really hot. 5 of the guests will have travelled some of the day.

I’ve actually been unwell this week so have relied on M&S to do the actual work. DH isn’t sure my planned spread is going to feed everybody so I’d like some opinions

I have bought:
2 quiches (one bacon and cheese, one cheese and onion)
2 packets hot flaked salmon
Ingredients for big Greek style salad (cucumber, tomatoes, red onion, feta etc)
Big bag of green salad
2 big pots of pasta, pesto and pine nut salad
6 sausage rolls
Big bag of M&S wotsits
Big bag of M&S bacon crisps
Huge double punnet of strawberries
Meringue nests
Cream
oh and cake

The sausage rolls and crisps are for whoever wants them but I obvs had the kids in mind picking those - I know all three kids like these things and eat them.

So that’s it. I think it’s enough. DH suspicious and thinks we might need ‘extras’.

Over to you Mumsnet (don’t worry, I’m braced for criticism and I can take it!)

Still nearly 150 opportunities for people to join the thread, be arrogant enough to assume nobody in 850 comments so far has suggested their genius idea of adding in some meats and cheeses, berate OP for not acknowledging the suggestions and entirely miss that the event is cancelled.

Will we get to the full 1000? How many more people will misundersthad how much cake was made? The game is on.

One has already popped up since you posted.

149 to go...

Totally agree its OK to et M&S do the lifting on this, its a hot hot day. But that would feed 4 in my family, I'd double it. Add some baguettes and some chicken and'or ham.

What your family would eat half a quiche each, plus 200g of pasta salad and 250g of potatoes, a helping of Greek salad and a sausage roll? Followed by pudding? Gosh.

Nowhere near enough for a dinner.

Fine for a "snacky bits" table to go with drinks, but as a dinner? Not even close. I'd happy share an average size quiche with my DH, and a bag of salad, and call that a "light dinner".
How about adding some chicken legs, sausages, or chicken goujons? Something protein-y to bulk it up a bit. Because apart from the salmon (which not everyone likes) and sausage rolls (which you don't have enough of), it's basically a vegetarian meal, which isn't everyone's vibe.

This is so clever, so unique, absolutely groundbreaking, genius advice. Thank goodness you are the first one in 873 posts to suggest this.

Come on Op, being the host who sends their guests home hungry really isn’t who you want to be.

The OP said multiple times she was going to buy more food 😭. What more does everyone want from her? Self flagellation?

TheBloomingDahlia · Yesterday 12:15

Totally off topic but does anyone remember when M&S’s brand was called St. Michael? For many years after the name change when my mum would have people over and they complimented her she would say “Thanks, I had help from Michael”. I still wonder if it was a common joke and they knew what she meant, or if they thought for all those years Michael was a helpful but very shy friend

I haven't been on MN long, but this has been my favourite thread.

Who knew a debate on the content of a Bank Holiday Monday tea/dinner/spread/collation (delete as appropriate) would be so entertaining?

That's all down to you, @geminicancerean . You have taken the worst that the most rabid/bonkers Mumsnetters can throw at you, and responded with patience, humour, and some pretty amazing maths.

Do hope you are feeling much better very soon, and that your family gathering turns out as well as this thread when it happens.

👏👏👏

No! [weeps] As has already been said on this thread... won't anyone think of the vegans?

FWIW I took myself off to M&S earlier and bought my DCs basically all the stuff the OP originally planned. Dinner Sorted. And now freshly-vegan me is eyeing up the quiche..... Gah!

CherryViper · Yesterday 12:22

Hope you feel better soon 💜

Your original idea was fab and you had enough for 4 adults, 1 adult eating less and three children.

Plenty of choice for everyone, you know their tastes. Pizza sounds fab, we are off to M&S and having the same.

JJMama · Yesterday 12:23

Not enough for 9, but why can’t DH sort it? You’ve not been well and you’ve still done loads, let him pull his finger out and step up.

mounjaroatlast · Yesterday 12:24

OP, on the whole, for tea, it's not a bad spread and you know your guests and what they will eat.

I know the situation has changed now, but I would have bought a couple of baguettes as well. Maybe a few more strawberries, but those 650g punnets are huge and would hold a lot of strawberries, especially if you were cutting them up and putting in nests with cream. At a recent family meal, I was in charge of removing stalks from strawberries and I think we had 800g for 9 of us (with meringue nests and cream, but they weren't all used).

M&S do a lovely quiche lorraine. Just to stick my penny in, I think adding another quiche and a chicken and a couple of baguettes, maybe some more new potatoes, with more sausage rolls for the kids, should have been enough for an afternoon tea. Anything left over could have been eaten the next day.

Don't go mad with that pizza will you, 9.5 inches is a bit extravagant for 9 people. Grin

I hope you feel better soon and enjoy your teeny tiny birthday cake Grin.

I'm trying to think what the opposite of a pile-on would be called. All this boot-licking of the OP is strange.

Jeeez no wonder there’s so much food waste / obesity in this country!! I don’t know why almost everyone is jumping on you Op and obviously not bothering to read even your posts let alone others. Cake sounds amazing and plenty enough (yes I do make cakes!) just hope you feel better soon so can enjoy your feast with your family and visitors 💐

Mining stock, what can I say! Built for hard work and hard workers need fuelling, but its not just about the quantity its the spread of items available.

I was always told to over, rather than under cater. Never leave a guest wanting more. Although they will probably be grateful for a cold spread whcih is a good move.

Anyway OP, hope it goes well and the company is good.

OtterandaRock · Yesterday 12:50

Does nobody else crave cauldrons of boiling hot tea in hot weather?

DeposedPresident · Yesterday 13:03

I don't... but I am craving soup today which seems odd. We plan to eat out in our garden too, and it just doesn't fit.

Teenagerantruns · Yesterday 13:05

This is really confusing me, normally mumsnet posters make one chicken last for 4 meals, now apprently we need roast chicken and all the food OP has, plus another load of sausage rolls and potatoes 😂.
I think the original menu was fine, I would maybe have added some bread but OP said she would do that many pages ago...

NoIffsNoButts · Yesterday 13:07

geminicancerean · 24/05/2026 18:21

Thank you! Yes it is!

And yes I absolutely am going to get more food.

The cake...and the potato salad...always grateful for other's well-received goods 😉

If they're close family/friends, I'm sure it'll be fine...if people are still hungry after that (given you're unwell, I'm glad OH is being put to work 😉) then there's always a shop open somewhere 🤪

Make time for a snooze OP, you'll be more knackered by hosting time ❤️

This thread has been bonkers but made me chuckle out loud. Well done @geminicancerean for handling the replies with such gusto and grace - a rare combination. Hope you're feeling better.

geminicancerean · Yesterday 13:11

Quiche, new potatoes and salad is not picnic food, it’s a perfectly normal balanced meal. An M&S quiche serves 3-4, there was 800g of pasta salad, 1kg of potatoes and a Greek salad. Ample food, especially with strawberry meringues and cake to follow. I’m assuming the people who think there aren’t enough strawberries have the kind of feral children I’ve encountered sometimes who would indeed be allowed to just plough into the strawberries (often involves biting the big ones then discarding). Also shocked at the number of suggestions of drumsticks, which are undoubtedly the absolute worst part of a chicken.

Agree. Fuck drumsticks, they have no place on my table.
