I don’t think I’m far off, if tops include t shirts. A lot of my clothes are secondhand.

7 coats is not a lot! I have a wardrobe and a huge hanging rail of coats and jackets. I do not have 21 cardigans though! Probably have about 5.

People are going to deny they have any clothes and insist they have 2 of each item on rotation- this is MN where everyone exists on a 1 chicken a month for a family of 6, nobody has any money and they all eat lentils and crochet their own knickers!

It was the 68 tops that sounded a bit insane to me… that’s a different top for nearly 10 weeks running!
I also have quite a ridiculous number of coats and jackets. And boots.

I think this too! Who are these teeny wardrobe people? They seem strange to me…

ForeverDelayedEpiphany · 09/05/2026 22:20

My DH said I need to cut back on the number of coats and jackets I have... 30+ I think (!). Jumpers are quite numerous top, and vest tops/t-shirts.

I probably have 20 pairs of jeans and trousers too. Yes - it's probably quite excessive/expensive but i buy a lot of Vinted and supermarket clothes, so noting hugely costly.

I was in M&S today though and they had some really gorgeous things, and Urban Outfitters too. I did feel quite a bit too old for the clothes there,as everyone was about half my age at 20! 🤣😆

I once cleared out my underwear drawer and I counted 108 knickers. I had no idea why I accumulated them all and half were the wrong size.

Quite a lot for one man

I have three times that amount if not four times. I shop too much and I know that. Mainly online and most items cost 100 pounds plus. Its crazy. The only time i don't shop is when my credit card is at its limit.

I feel better now!

outerspacepotato · 09/05/2026 22:29

🤯

You must have a lot of closet and drawer space. I think I have some closet envy. Mine is tiny.

With that many clothes, do you ever wear things out? I'm putting winter stuff away and I've found two shirts and a pair of pants that are just worn out.

68 tops might be a lot in a sunny climate but we have cold and seasonal weather which requires layering most of the time. Winter wool jumpers, merino wool jumpers, cardigans, cotton jumpers, v neck jumpers, round neck jumpers, long sleeve jumpers, short sleeve jumpers, polo necks. Then move on to cotton long sleeve tops, plain tops, striped tops, v neck tops, round neck tops, long sleeve, mid sleeve, short sleeve. Then vest tops - round neck, v neck. Then the above tops in various colours. These are only the plain tops. Then add some patterns to help us feel less drab in our grey climate. Then we need trousers - wool trousers, cotton trousers, jeans - dark, mid blue, light blue, cream, white. Barrel trousers, wide trousers, barrel jeans, wide jeans. jeans of varying lengths to wear with different shoe heights, cords, light summer trousers, long summer trousers, shorter length summer trousers. Then skirts and dresses - wool for winter and cotton for summer. Then some co-ords and some smarter clothes for when you have to look smart and a couple of 'statement pieces that make you feel good. Then some occasion clothes for weddings, funerals and various family occasions. A few 'going out' type clothes for meeting friends in restaurants and one or two for pubs and dancing (personally one or two of this category is enough for me as I don't go out dancing anymore). Then loungewear and comfy style clothes for school runs and dog walking. Then coats that go with the above - long coats, short coats, heavy coats, light coats, coats with hoods, coats with collars, pattern coats, and various colours. I've missed loads but it easily adds up.......

cheeseomelette · 09/05/2026 22:36

I’ve got loads. Probably more than the op. I have classic taste, like quality items and look after things so they last years. I like to mix up colours and styles depending on my mood and what I’m up to. I would be so miserable with the same things each week.

I’m always selling things on Vinted though. It’s funded a big trip we’re taking later in the year.

havingoneofthosedays · 09/05/2026 22:05

I have 9 fur coats… can you imagine what the rest of my wardrobe entails 😂

All fur coat and no knickers?😂

RedRiverShore6 · 09/05/2026 22:36

I probably have more but different stuff, not much swimwear and shorts. I have plenty of room for them though as I didn't want to waste DS's wardrobe and drawers when he moved out.

Vivienne1000 · 09/05/2026 22:37

18 pairs of shorts? Do we actually have 18 sunny days in this country?

I know about seasonal weather, I live in the U.K. I don’t have anywhere 68 tops and always have plenty of choice in what to wear, whatever the weather or occasion.

DancingNotDrowning · 09/05/2026 22:41

I had significantly more and wouldn’t be unusual amongst my friends but accept it’s likely may people have less

I use Whering to track my clothes so I have a pretty good idea of my last 2-3 year purchases.

raisinglittlepeople12 · 09/05/2026 22:42

Yes it’s a normal amount of clothing… for a shop. Why so much??

ElleintheWoods · 09/05/2026 22:44

Hmmm... I own one pair of jeans (1!). 3 coats and I think that's too many. Could easily get through a season with 20 of my favourite clothing items on rotation and need nothing else. And I still feel like I own too much and constantly try to clear it out.

Going to say it, IMO you have far too much and could do with a clearcut. If you love having lots of options and tire of clothes easily, why not go for a one-in-one-out approach?

Beamur · 09/05/2026 22:45

Nope. Not average.

Yes, it is a crazy amount, but the inevitable 'I've got 3-4 times that many clothes/shoes/handbags' comments are coming in thick and fast!

Seems the new bragfesting is competitive clothes/shoes/handbag owning. 😆

Gigglegiggle · 09/05/2026 22:45

That's why I can't find anything in the shops, it's all in OPs wardrobe.

coolcahuna · 09/05/2026 22:46

I'm probably matching you in dresses and tops, have more jackets and coats but have way less in all the other categories.
I think you could have a sift through and reduce if you wanted to.

MrsMillyFluff · 09/05/2026 22:47

I can't say anything against this as I have sadly discovered Vinted and have half a houseful of clothing 😂

Itsnotallaboutyoulikeyouthink · 09/05/2026 22:48

My summer wardrobe consists of two pairs of wide leg trousers and two tops. That’s it, too skint to buy anything more.
