Aibu that having thick hair is not something for someone to be envious of!?

As the title says!
I have very thick hair, always have, it’s straight but has lots of kinks in so needs to be blow dried and straightened after each wash. I absolutely cannot leave to air dry as it’s a frizzy poofy mess. Even just blasting it with hair dyer it’s frizzy, lots of kinks and a few waves. Needs to be brushed as I dry it to somehow calm it down and it takes absolutely ages to do! It’s about bra strap length, I’ve tried it shorter but doesn’t sit right, needs some weight to hold it down so doesn’t poof out, layers don’t sit right. First bit of wind outside and it turns to a mess, gets very knotty.

Today Someone asked if my hair was all mine and that they would love to have hair like mine. This isn’t the first conversation I’ve had with people about wanting thick hair. Every hairdresser I go to mentions it.

or
yanbu thick hair is a pita!

Also if anyone has any styling tips that would be great

My hair used to be just like you described in the first post until a new hairdresser asked me why I'd brushed it that morning...Seeing the look of horror/confusion on my face, that lovely man broke the news that my hair is actually naturally curly.
My mum has poker straight hair, no idea how to recognise or care for curly hair at all and thinks that not brushing it every morning is a sign of moral weakness - which was why I was in my 30s before I discovered my curls.
Then I got a decent cut that suits thick curly hair, some tips on care, and my life is so much easier now.
Just a thought.

I used to have thick hair and post menopause it has gradually thinned, which I am sad about (also worried as to how much thinner it could get...) However in other ways it is as annoying as it ever was - mainly straight but with certain parts that always try to kink in the wrong way.

But yes, thick hair is an asset generally. One of my dds has amazing shiny thick hair. It definitely gets attention.

mightymam · 23/04/2026 13:42

I have alopecia and will likely lose all my hair. I frequently stare at other people’s hair wishing it was mine!

ThatGoldLeader · 23/04/2026 14:05

I have super thick hair and I love it. I do have my moments when I want to cut it off but my hair is probably my best feature.

DamnBuster · 23/04/2026 14:07

"it’s straight but has lots of kinks in"

... so curly then. 🤣

ForMerryMauveDreamer · 23/04/2026 14:08

As a woman with irreversible hair loss, I would LOVE to have your hair issues

ohyesido · 23/04/2026 14:13

I have very fine hair that won’t be styled no matter how much product I use, so i would love to have thick heavy hair

Same. It feels ridiculous to be so sad about the loss of my thick, shiny hair, but it was the one attribute I actually liked about my appearance.

Lifeomars · 23/04/2026 14:39

mine is fine, but with lots of it I hate it with a passion, it frizzes, will not hold a style, wavy, but no proper curl, deep conditioning to try to combat the frizz weighs it down and makes it look thin. I would love thick hair, but I think we always want what we have not got hairwise. My hair only looks ok just after I have blow dried it, one blast of wind when I go out and it is a tangled mess, hair spray does not seem to make any difference. Oh and while it grows fast it has never grown beyond a certain length. When I was young I really wanted long hair like my many of my friends had but it would not grow beyond my shoulders. The only thing I like about it is the colour, I am a natural deep brunette and have hardly any white hair so that is something!

ChildrenOfTheQuorn · 23/04/2026 14:41

I have very thick hair and since sleeping in heatless rollers (with slightly damp hair) it finally looks decent without styling! And I get actual compliments instead of being told I look like a beast!

ETA: And the upside of thick hair is I didn't have to worry about postpartum hair loss. It could only be an improvement.

TheBeaTgoeson1 · 23/04/2026 14:52

I love my thick natural hair.

Pattaya · 23/04/2026 16:26

Well i like to think of it as, when others are having thining or losing hair i`ll still have plenty left.
I love my thick salt and pepper cork screw hair.

ResponsiblePopcorn · 23/04/2026 16:32

Wait until you hit peri and you'll be glad of it. Your excess will soon disappear.

JohnTheRevelator · 23/04/2026 17:20

I have very thick hair,I sometimes say I have enough hair for 2 people! I have cursed it and complained about it quite often but then I remember what my late DM went through during the menopause. Her hair thinned so drastically that you could see her scalp through it. She felt very self-conscious about it. So I think I actually got the better deal. I'm 62 now and have been post-menopausal for about 8 years so hopefully the same thing won't happen to me.

covilha · 23/04/2026 17:39

Haha- this made me laugh as a thin hair lady, who yearned for the pre raphaelite, rapunzel braids when young
it wasn’t until someone said it was hot and sweaty that it occurred to me it wasn’t as wonderful as it seemed.
still vote yabu though as my hair s even thinner now, I get sun burn on my scalp(!), it falls out regularly l, won’t grow- and frizzy- pay! Try the fuzziness that only comes from super fine hair split ends.
anyway, op, enjoy your thick, bountiful, lustres locks for as long as you can. I know many an older lady appearing remarkably youthful due to their thick, full head of hair- oh yeah, just remembered it doesn’t seem to grey much for them either

Yodeldodeldo · 23/04/2026 18:12

I used to have super thick hair, its thinned a lot in perimenopause but my hairdresser reassures me I still have a decent amount.

So I"m another who thinks be careful what you wish for!

starafuzina · 23/04/2026 18:21

Very thick hair here - always have to pay for extra time at the hairdresser! It is a pain but with blow drying and straightening it is manageable. Now I have greys and am dying it as well the whole thing costs an absolute fortune but as others have said you do have to be grateful for what you have.
Mine’s only really manageable at over shoulder length so it’s probably what some would consider long for my age now but it just doesn’t work short!

Lll898 · 23/04/2026 18:25

YANBU
I have very thick hair thinned a bit from when I was in my 20s.
But same each wash has to be straightened properly and all other days I have to use a straightening brush
My hairdresser and a few of my friends comment on love to have thick hair like yours, I smile etc, but if it's damp windy really hot my straightened hair turns into a huge frizzy mess.

Konstantine8364 · 23/04/2026 18:25

It sounds like you have annoying to style hair plus thick hair. Mine is thick and wavy, I can add curl cream, scrunch it and leave it to air dry and it looks pretty good. I can also blow dry it with my mega hairdryer in about 20mins. I don't have to brush it as I blow it. It's the fluffy/frizzy element to yours that makes it tricky I reckon.

RampantIvy · 22/04/2026 18:59

As a post menopausal woman with hair that has thinned too much YABVVVVVU.

Be careful what you wish for.

This !!!

I feel your pain op. I have half and half hair, one side curly, one side straight. I look in the mirror every morning and think 'where do I start' it looks like a mattress explosion. I've settled for a short style so I can at least make it look tidy with straighteners most times, although a lot of times I end up washing and drying it to look presentable. The colour is like a strawberry blonde and every time I go to the hairdresser she says ' I love your hair' well how about we swap? My messy mop for your straight glossy hair, 🙄

Grandma600 · 23/04/2026 18:46

I have a thick, wild, untameable mane that seems resistant to all sorts of products that claim to make it more manageable, and last November a new hairdresser suggested thinning it. The result was so far from what I thought, I will never complain again

Rad1ogoogoo · 23/04/2026 18:49

Thick hair may have it's issues, but I 'd happily swop it for my thin, frizzy hair that's falling out

Flossy1985 · 23/04/2026 18:52

I hear you op!! My hair is thick and natural beach waves if I leave my hair to air dry it’s unmanageable and dry as anything. I’m tired of hearing “oh I’d love to have thick hair” or “oh your so lucky” it’s an absolute nightmare, can’t have it too long it’s far too heavy and too short it’s a microphone head. Then trips to the hairdressers pre warn it’s thick and long and get charged for the extra time it takes. Yeah it’s great fun having thick hair 🙄😩

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 23/04/2026 18:55

I have thick curly hair and I’m delighted.
