Aibu that having thick hair is not something for someone to be envious of!?

As the title says!
I have very thick hair, always have, it’s straight but has lots of kinks in so needs to be blow dried and straightened after each wash. I absolutely cannot leave to air dry as it’s a frizzy poofy mess. Even just blasting it with hair dyer it’s frizzy, lots of kinks and a few waves. Needs to be brushed as I dry it to somehow calm it down and it takes absolutely ages to do! It’s about bra strap length, I’ve tried it shorter but doesn’t sit right, needs some weight to hold it down so doesn’t poof out, layers don’t sit right. First bit of wind outside and it turns to a mess, gets very knotty.

Today Someone asked if my hair was all mine and that they would love to have hair like mine. This isn’t the first conversation I’ve had with people about wanting thick hair. Every hairdresser I go to mentions it.

YANBU, I have such thick, frizzy hair even with severe anaemia my hair is falling out daily & its still so thick, washing it more than once a week it goes so dry, I have literal heat coming off my head even in cold weather, my hair is almost afro (nothing wrong with that btw) but I just can't cope with the thickness on a daily basis, for work I straighten it & tie it up, wearing it down it just makes me sweat so much I get flustered & fed up, it actually knocks my confidence terribly.

FriedFalafels · 23/04/2026 18:59

Some curling cream and an overnight heatless curler. My hair sounds similar to yours. I let it 80% naturally dry at least before wrapping it at night. Perfect curls the next day. I gave up on straight hair 10 years ago and I’ve never looked back since buying a heatless curler 3 years ago. It was a game changer

whattheysay · 23/04/2026 19:04

My hair is wavy and frizzy except it’s fine and I feel that’s more shit than thick hair

liveforsummer · 23/04/2026 19:21

People don’t spend 100’s of £ on extensions for nothing. Thick hair when styled looks way better. Definitely seems worth the effort for us thin haired folk

2ndcarowner · 23/04/2026 19:38

It’s really frustrating to hear people say be careful what you wish for and I’d love to have thick hair! You wouldn’t want it, it gets too hot in summer and having it ‘thinned out’ makes it a weird shape and doesn’t make it any easier to style, it’s dry and fizzy and sticks out if there’s even the tiniest bit of moisture in the air, it’s not curly or straight, it’s just frizzy and bouffant! And I have to book extra time at the hairdressers because it takes so long to dry.

Phonicshaskilledmeoff · 23/04/2026 19:42

My thick hair is literally the only thing I like about my appearance 🙃

pickedupontheway · 23/04/2026 20:08

I get it op, my hair has always been super thick and frizzy but dead straight, it has calmed down over the years and it's now a lot more manageable but when I was younger no haircut suited it, it looked dreadful.
Anyway, I never ever style or even dry it, I let it air dry.
After washing and conditioning, I put a pea sized amount of coconut oil all over, apply it with my fingers, it works a treat for me to give my hair a bit of weight and helps with the frizz. Just something you can try

KitsyWitsy · 23/04/2026 20:15

I am constantly envious of people with thick hair these days. I never used to notice but now I have the thin wisps of a peri-menopausal WLI woman, I would kill to have some thick, lustrous hair; even if it takes ages to dry.

Vitrolinsanity · 23/04/2026 20:35

I’m 57 and have always been the subject of compliments about my hair. It’s not thick, but there’s tonnes of it. It takes any colour or style thrown at it.

There are days when I think “bastard Barnet”, especially when I’m paying my hairdresser.

AccordingToWhom · 23/04/2026 20:58

Why do people keep using words such as 'shiny' and 'lustrous'? Mine certainly bloody isn't, no matter what I use on it! If it was, I would actually like it.

I hear you, OP.

My hair is very thick and always has been. If I don't dry it properly, it goes frizzy. I can't remember what it's like to have a fringe as my hair looks really stupid that thick as a fringe, with too many kinks.

It is always such a PITA to dry, takes forever, and I do know it's good to cut into lots of different styles, but I'm not able to have any special hairstyle these days with 3 DC as it would just be too time consuming to faff around with.

I remember when someone said to me that my hair was like a horse"s (!) - that was... odd lol 😆 😅

Ironically, when I was younger, I had literally every type of style, from a crop to very long and everything in between. Now I am perimenopausal and it seems to be getting thinner, I am starting to wonder if I actually should relish having thick hair.😆😳

I remember seeing a postnatal photo of me when my hair started to be really thin (hormonal fluctuations and low iron ferritin levels were the culprits), and it did look terrible. At that point, I wasn't glad to have thinning hair and I remember wishing it was my normal thickness.

Thick hair is ok in theory, but it does have its cons, definitely.

Grandma600 · 23/04/2026 22:03

I have a thick, wild, untameable mane that seems resistant to all sorts of products that claim to make it more manageable, and last November a new hairdresser suggested thinning it. The result was so far from what I thought, I will never complain again

I have thick curly hair and get a lot of compliments. You do have to know which products work for your hair and do a bit of experimenting. But I prefer it.
I feel sorry for people with thin hair. I know someone who regularly puts their hair up in a bun and its just looks like a little grape on her poor head.

SwatTheTwit · 23/04/2026 22:12

YANBU that it is an absolute pita, but YABU if you think the alternative would be any better.

I used to hate my hair (especially because I have loads…… everywhere………) but as I age I really appreciate it now. It’s worth the extra care.

starafuzina · 23/04/2026 18:21

Very thick hair here - always have to pay for extra time at the hairdresser! It is a pain but with blow drying and straightening it is manageable. Now I have greys and am dying it as well the whole thing costs an absolute fortune but as others have said you do have to be grateful for what you have.
Mine’s only really manageable at over shoulder length so it’s probably what some would consider long for my age now but it just doesn’t work short!

Mines a bit long too. My hairdresser cuts in long layers, I have long bangs. Dry naturally after washing, patting wet hair then running a a soft rubber brush through it. That usually avoids too much frizz as does a Pompadour comb.

I do use a hairband until it's dry. I can twist it up using a crocodile clip to hold as well if it needs washing.

wahwahwoo · 23/04/2026 22:26

I would give up straightening it and work with the waves. I love having thick hair. After washing it, I just use some mousse and gel and then air dry. Never ever brush it when it’s dry.

santosin · 23/04/2026 22:49

Mine is freakishly thick and very curly. It has been a defining thing in my life. I can't cut it short because it turns into a huge solid ball. Even in my fifties I have hair past my waist, and it takes me two hours to untangle the knots. When I go to have my hair styled I have two (or sometimes three) hairdressers working on me at the same time.

Anon501178 · 23/04/2026 22:55

I'm with you OP! Mine has been thick and kinky since childhood. My hairdresser tells me it's a good thing, and I try not to be too ungrateful since my best friend had cancer and lost hers for some time.
But it takes bloody ages to dry, straighten etc.I do envy people who have slick straight thinner hair. When I was younger I used to hack it to bits with thinning shears 😅

Hummingbird10 · 23/04/2026 23:08

Bra strap length? Love it! 🤣🤣

BeeHive909 · 23/04/2026 23:18

Well I’ve got fine thin hair thanks to chemo and believe me I’d absolutely love to have thick hair .

Crudd99 · 23/04/2026 23:23

I've always had thin , fine hair. Also lost a lot after surgical menopause. You are very lucky.

BlueJayRose · 23/04/2026 23:32

My friend has hair like yours, she keeps it short. Which is a good look for her anyways.

MidnightMeltdown · Yesterday 02:33

Depends what you mean by ‘thick’. Lots of people say thick when they mean dense. Thick hair (where the actual strands are thick) tends to be dull, wiry and dry. My hair is dense but fine.

Iocanepowder · Yesterday 03:02

I would love your hair.

My hair frizzy but also think. It has fallen out since having 2 kids and now i hardly have any. My friends with thick hair had some postpartum hairloss but you can’t actually tell because they had so much hair anyway.

Overtheatlantic · Yesterday 03:03

Af decades of styling products and wasting money I’ve given in to the ways of my mother and MIL and I now get a Saturday afternoon blow dry. It’s worth it to me.
