Aibu that having thick hair is not something for someone to be envious of!?

As the title says!
I have very thick hair, always have, it’s straight but has lots of kinks in so needs to be blow dried and straightened after each wash. I absolutely cannot leave to air dry as it’s a frizzy poofy mess. Even just blasting it with hair dyer it’s frizzy, lots of kinks and a few waves. Needs to be brushed as I dry it to somehow calm it down and it takes absolutely ages to do! It’s about bra strap length, I’ve tried it shorter but doesn’t sit right, needs some weight to hold it down so doesn’t poof out, layers don’t sit right. First bit of wind outside and it turns to a mess, gets very knotty.

Today Someone asked if my hair was all mine and that they would love to have hair like mine. This isn’t the first conversation I’ve had with people about wanting thick hair. Every hairdresser I go to mentions it.

Aibu that having thick hair isn’t something to be envious of
or
yanbu thick hair is a pita!

Also if anyone has any styling tips that would be great

My daughter (24) has a form of alopecia and we pay a LOT of money for a hair system (also the tears and emotional upset of the years have been hard) so finding it hard to be sympathetic

Just to say I completely understand all hair types have their own problems and I guess we always want something we haven’t got

I have very thick hair - it is a pain but I’d much rather that, than thin hair. My hair has thinned and broken a good bit recently due to highlights, heat damage and probably my age but thankfully you don’t see it due to the volume of it for which I’m grateful!

Speaking as some one who had very thick hair until I had kids, yabu. I used to find it a bit annoying for similar reasons to the ones you've mentioned. However, now my hair is more on the thin side and I'd have my old hair back in a heartbeat.

I'm 60 and my hair is as thick as it's always been, oh how I wish it had got thinner over time.

Me too. I look like hagrid most days

Daisypod · Today 19:34

I used to have very thick hair too and struggled to style it. Over the last two years it has thinned a lot and my god I miss my thick hair.

wiwaprwfimh70 · Today 19:34

I'm in envy of women that can just blast their hair with the hair dryer and they have perfectly straight shiny hair. Yours sounds like it behaves like mine. A bloody fizzy hard to control mess. Mine two is down to my bra strap. I had to three hairdressers drying my hat after a color and cut, and they go on about how they pay for extensions for the same hair.

IPoopRainblows · Today 19:35

I have lots of very thick wavy hair, yes it’s a pain in the arse to manage but I’d take it over thin hair any day.
I have layers to the front otherwise there’s just far too much hair around my face.
I wash it twice weekly and use lots of conditioner and a weekly deep condition.
I rough dry it with an air wrap and then finish it with the brush attachment to enhance the natural kinks. Then finish the ends with hair oil.

Washing drying and styling its takes at least 1.5 hrs.

Alwayswonderedwhy · Today 19:40

Sounds like you have frizzy hair so yanbu to dislike that. I have think hair and apart from it taking ages to dry I love it.

Cushionseams · Today 19:41

Whenever I've been asked by a hairdresser What I most and least like about my hair - it's the fact it's so thick and grows so fast, for both😄
I'm really grateful that it is so thick at nearly 60, I know how lucky I am But it's a pain in the bum sometimes, when it goes frizzy and any colour starts growing out within days.

LadyMacbethssweetArabianhand · Today 19:42

I used to have gloriously nutty dark brown hair. It was thick and lovely. Sadly I developed thyroid issues and diabetes and now I'm nearly bald. I would love my hair to return. So be careful what you wish for.

Beyondamountainandoverthesea · Today 19:42

I will swap you for my non existent hair. It is an embarrassment to me and there is nothing I can do to make it any better. Having thick hair must be a wonderful problem to have IMHO.

Kitkate21 · Today 19:43

You should get a keratin blow dry. Makes a huge difference to my hair

DirtyBird · Today 19:44

I would give my pinky finger for thick hair even if its unmanageable. I have very thin hair and have a spot that is balding. I have to wear wigs/hairpieces. I'd rather have thick wavy hair kinks than barely any hair at all.

Apparentlystillchilled · Today 19:44

YANBU. I have very thick very straight hair. My mum (who has lots of fine hair) used to always say what great hair I have. But putting it up used to give me a headache and it was so heavy. Getting it cut short over 20 year ago was a genius move.

If I had to pick between thick unruly hair and thin wispy flat hair, I’d pick thick every time. There are things that can be done to mitigate the difficulties of thick hair. I have really thick hair that tends to frizz, I have loads of the weight removed with razor cutting and thinning shears, I also have an undercut that removes a lot of the bulk.
you don’t have to blow dry it, you prefer to and you like how it looks more, but there is no have about it.
my sister has very thin hair and she wears toppers and wigs to cover it as it’s so sparse she looks like she’s balding. I would never complain about my hair.

PinkCatCushion · Today 19:45

I have always loved my fine hair; it’s soft, shiny and beautiful. My family seem to love stroking it!

Hereforthedramaz · Today 19:47

No idea if it’s true but I read frizzy hair is just wavy or curly hair that’s too dry.

I gave it a go and found at at 30 that my lifelong awful thick hair was just uncared for curly.

have you tried using silicone free products, scrunching and letting dry naturally?

DavesGirl90 · Today 19:47

Well long thick hair is one of the most basic beauty standards isn’t it!

My pony tail diameter is narrower than a pencil. My hair takes just as much work as you describe but still looks crap at the end of it. I feel so ugly and unfeminine because of it. I remember being a teenager and not being able to do any of the hair styles in the magazines because I had such thin fine hair. I don’t even have enough hair to make a ponytail look ok, never mind half up, space bun, braids and so on. Greasy minutes after washing too.

So I’d take your problems over mine!

bumptybum · Today 19:47

Get a keratin treatment. It will last a few months. , your hair will be smooth and silky and shiny and not tangle

Sloelydoesit · Today 19:48

My thick hair used to have amazing curls. Now they are rubbish.
The air wrap has saved me. no more curls but so much easier to maintain

I’ve been looking into toppers. I’m not post menopausal. I don’t have an iron deficiency. I was just born with terrible hair genes. At least unlike your sister I don’t have a sister with lovely thick hair - it would drive me mad with envy and bitterness!

GentleSheep · Today 19:50

Depends on the type of hair, surely? Mine is (was, thanks hypothyroidism) thick but each strand is fine. Was tricky as a child due to getting a lot of knots in it which meant painful brushing/combing and until about 50 yrs old did require a lot of drying. Now, have lost around half of it and wish I had it back!

MaidOfSteel · Today 20:05

I’ve always had thick hair. It’s very difficult to handle and style. During lockdown, when it got quite a bit longer than I like, I was driven mad by the cotters! Getting a brush or comb through it was torture.

Much as there are problems with having thick hair, I don’t think I’d want to swap.

Nothingl3ft · Today 20:05

I have very fine hair and a lot of it, the colour is a sort of wishy washy blonde/brown and there's some photos where it's tied back you have to look twice to check I'm not bald. It's why I have a fringe.
My DD has thick hair that's long and we both moan about our hair, hers needs planning and plenty of time for her to wash it and sort it out afterwards, but it takes ages before it looks greasy and dry shampoo works a treat.
Mine on the other hand starts to get greasy 5 minutes after it's washed and it's even worse if I don't blow dry it, but takes seconds to wash and dry which is good because I have to wash it every day to avoid looking like I've poured oil on it. Sometimes twice a day, windy conditions, sweating, putting sun cream or moisturiser on my face, makeup etc - hair looks greasy, so if I'm at work then going out in the evening, gets washed twice to look like it's been washed at all in the last week. If it gets greasy it also has that unwashed hair smell, which can happen in less than 24 hours.
It's dead straight too, gets split ends very easily but looks greasy straight away if I use conditioner or anything, any type of product other than a quite harsh shampoo, even hairspray to try and keep it in the vicinity of where it should be.
So the work I put in is on an ongoing, daily basis and my DD has to set aside a full evening once a week, swings and roundabouts.
Oh and constantly being told "You shouldn't wash it so much, use conditioner, use a greasy hair product" tried all of it over the years, nothing works.
