Aibu that having thick hair is not something for someone to be envious of!?

As the title says!
I have very thick hair, always have, it’s straight but has lots of kinks in so needs to be blow dried and straightened after each wash. I absolutely cannot leave to air dry as it’s a frizzy poofy mess. Even just blasting it with hair dyer it’s frizzy, lots of kinks and a few waves. Needs to be brushed as I dry it to somehow calm it down and it takes absolutely ages to do! It’s about bra strap length, I’ve tried it shorter but doesn’t sit right, needs some weight to hold it down so doesn’t poof out, layers don’t sit right. First bit of wind outside and it turns to a mess, gets very knotty.

Today Someone asked if my hair was all mine and that they would love to have hair like mine. This isn’t the first conversation I’ve had with people about wanting thick hair. Every hairdresser I go to mentions it.

Aibu that having thick hair isn’t something to be envious of
or
yanbu thick hair is a pita!

Also if anyone has any styling tips that would be great

Sounds like it’s the frizz that’s the problem, not the thickness. Mine is very thick (although I get it thinned a little at the hairdressers) and waist length, I just wash it every other evening and let it air dry.

WhatALiberty8 · Today 20:09

Are you sure you haven’t got curly hair, have you tried a curly hair routine? I have curly thick hair but if I were to just wash it and let it dry or I brushed it dry it would also be a frizzy mess.

Waitingfordoggo · Today 20:10

I have loads of hair too and hairdressers often comment on it. Other women with thin or fine hair have often said they envy it.

I hear you. My hair is a massive ballache to look after and it almost always looks untidy, but I think I would rather have this than thinning hair.

I’ve got rubbish skin and teeth so I’m just grateful to have one physical feature that others admire.

And now I’m in peri I think it’s thinner than it used to be. I’ve still got plenty and it definitely couldn’t be described as thinning or lacklustre but I think there is less than there used to be so enjoy your thick locks- they might not stay that way!

As a post menopausal woman with hair that has thinned too much YABVVVVVU.

Be careful what you wish for.

Really agree. I always had good hair. It was a great colour, thick and behaved well.

Thankyou menopause (not) 😠

Ficinothricegreat · Today 20:16

yep, could have written your post. Second a hot air brush

OtherTemporaryUsername · Today 20:17

I have your hair - mine has thinned a bit with menopause so am glad it was thick to start with. I alternate between straightening and curling it up - it will do both and behave for 2-3 days. But the gamechanger for me is giving up on long - you think you need the weight to hold it, but you don't - if it is properly straightened it doesn't need weight, and if curled, better with less weight. I have gone short (chin length at the front and very short with undercut at the back) and it is quick and I can ring the changes when I feel like it. And short hair carried high (when curly) draws the eye up and I look 10 years younger than I did with long hair. And it is QUICK so washing/styling every 2-3 days is no issue. Joy! Embrace the scissors.

I have thick, coarse hair that dries naturally into a beautiful mane with a slight wave. I’m extremely lucky.

YABU.

Yellowpingu · Today 20:24

I have thick hair that is so unmanageable that I have it cut short and thinned out. I can only have the style it’s in as it won’t cooperate with anything else! I still wouldn’t swap it for thin hair as you can always take some away but you can’t add it.

TwistedWonder · Today 20:27

I’ve got thick wavy hair which I’ve never loved but at 60 I now appreciate how lucky I am to not have suffered thinning hair which many of my friends have post menopause

Xmasbaby11 · Today 20:28

How old are you op?

I have similar hair, very thick and wavy. When I was young it annoyed me as it was hard to manage and not trendy.

I am 50 now and love my hair! I’m grateful it’s so thick and healthy. Also there are tons more hair posts and styling tools than when I was young, so if I want to wear it straight, I can.

Bringemout · Today 20:29

Had to wash and straighten my hair everyday, it’s not fun, I’m in my 40’s and have it thinned out a bit and get a keratin treatment to smooth it out so now just blow dry it, I’m happier with it now, it looked lovely when I was younger but the maintenance was a pain in the arse. Having said that, once menopause hits I expect it will thin out a lot and in the long run i miaght be grateful. When I was a kid my hairdresser used to have a cigarette break, it was that thick. Frankly apart from my hair I’m not much to look at so on balance I’m grateful.

Samanabanana · Today 20:31

I used to have lovely thick hair and now I have straggly thin hair. Give me back my thick and unruly hair any day!

AgnesMcDoo · Today 20:32

As my hair thins due to age I really miss when it was thick and lush

TheWytch · Today 20:33

I have horribly thick hair too and it's coarse.

An undercut really helped to keep it in check but I've recently had it all chopped off and it's just so much easier to manage

waves in post menopause, underneath formerly thick hair

1980Me · Today 20:38

I have fine but abundant hair and I have exactly the same problems you do because it's frizzy/curly.
It's not the thickness that's the problem if your hair was poker straight and equally thick, it would be easier to manage and probably look effortlessly stunning.

EmeraldShamrock000 · Today 20:39

I would be envious of your thick head of hair. Mine is thinning out. I go for an 80’s wavy style, hides the thinning.

thickhairproblems · Today 20:39

I’m in my 30’s and my hair has been like this aslong as I remember. I don’t necessarily want thin hair just more manageable.
I just don’t think people understand how difficult thick hair can be and that somewhere in between is most desirable

OP posts:
WearyAuldWumman · Today 20:41

My hair was so thick that the hairdresser used to take thinning shears to it. I'd rather have that than what I have now.

AyeRight78 · Today 20:42

I have exactly the same hair and I’m with you 100%. Imagine being able to just wash your hair and then leave it to dry? That would change my life. As it happens I got an undercut about 5 years ago and it really does help but I’m now trying to grow it out as I really notice the fact there’s now a gap between my neck and hair (well in photos anyway) so now I have the joys of growing this out. my hair was lovely and thick until menopause hit now it is thin and straw like so make the most of it

Sure but thick hair can be thinned out easily. You cant thicken up thinning hair can you?

I think it's a bit disingenuous to be implying that women with thinning hair shouldnt be envious. If your scalp was showing through your hair with obvious balding patches would you really prefer that to your current hair??

Everintroverte · Today 20:44

I would love to have a headful of thick hair. Unfortunately I have a lot of fine hair that doesn't hold a style and is murky blondy/brown.

My DSD has incredibly thick, long hair which is just lovely but does need a lot of looking after. About a year ago the hairdresser hacked at it with thinning shears which changed her hair texture and turned it into a tangley, matted, nightmare! Some of her hair was thin and spring like to look at post shearing.

DeltaVariant · Today 20:45

I had hideously thick hair but it’s thinned out due to medication. It’s so much more practical. I can air dry it!
