Daughter won't take her socks off on holiday

Hi,

I am going on holiday to Gran Canaria with my eldest daughter in a few weeks time. The weather of course will be quite warm and there's something that bugs me about my daughter when we go on a sunshine holiday. Whatever she is wearing on her feet (sliders, crocs & sandals) she will pair them with socks, even in boiling weather! Personally I am a flip flop and bare feet all day kind of woman. Is anyone else's son or daughter reluctant to take their socks off on holiday or is it just mine? I do worry she will overheat one of these days even at 21 years old. Is there anything I could say to her about this to convince her to ditch the socks?

I meant to add that this is yet another in a series of utterly pointless posts which have been wasting forum bandwidth in the last week or so. Grandma’s remarks about her grandson’s fake tan, a work colleague with an imaginary dog, now a daughter’s socks. I know I’m old and grumpy, but Jesus, is it getting tiresome.

No wonder some peeps take the piss out of older relatives when they come out with shit like over heating in socks. It makes them sound a bit bat shit.

Lovely bit of ageism there. Someone with a 21 yo could feasibly be any age from mid 30s.

I love going barefoot at home and live in summer sandals (in summer) - and I wear liners in nice flats and trainer socks in trainers. I find visible socks with nice outfits are often such an unchic clanger. A visual flat note. I do have slippers for v cold weather or for other peoples houses / hotels!

I also really dislike the enormous socks the kids wear with shorts - and the sort of 80s/90s revival thing they have going on, particularly with clothes that look like they've been in a cupboard, uncared for since the 80s / 90s. I always wonder when the wearer last had a wash. Particularly if paired with shaggy hair and those straggly taches and Jeffrey Dahmer glasses the young men favour. Millenial friends agree.

However- it's fashion. So they should be left to get on with it. Eventually the tables will turn and hemlines - and socklines- will change.

Edited

🤣 every generation of parent/grandparent says this!

I bet When you were in your teens and early 20s you rolled your eyes at your parents comments on your low rise bootcut jeans or spice girl style platform trainers or crop top or ripped jeans or winged eye liner or whatever it was depending upon your age. You probably swore blind you wouldn't be like this when you were older and now you are falling into exactly that trap!

The OP is probably embarassed to be seen with her.

I think everyone who has replied to this post has been exceptionally rude.

Is she self conscious about her feet? Verruca? Fungal nail?

Yes I was wondering this.

Utopiaqueen · 21/04/2026 11:36

I honestly this thread would be about some young child.

She's 21. Leave her be. Why on earth would you be so wound up about what your ADULT daughter wears on her feet?

FruAashild · 21/04/2026 11:38

Gen Z don't do bare feet or more specifically toes. My teens won't wear sandals unless they are closed toe. So, if you want her to wear sandals see what she thinks about fisherman sandals or other closed toe styles.

MoonWoman69 · 21/04/2026 11:59

It's obviously very weird. Maybe she has an issue with her nails or feet and she's embarrassed? Have you mentioned it to her and what does she say?
Unless she discloses why, then I think it's just something you're going to have to accept.

KimberleyClark · 21/04/2026 12:04

Do Gen Z go swimming in socks then?

Because you are being ridiculous telling your 21 year old what to wear.

Has she tried therapy?

Or maybe not everyone finds bare feet in sandals, crocs, sliders comfortable?

Some sandals I can manage, but not crocs or sliders.

That is true but how many peeps in their mid 30's would worry about over heating in a pair of socks ?? It IS the sort of thing a much older person would say, and I say that as an older person. It would enter my head to say something so daft.🙄
Op has had a drubbing and to be fair brought it on themselves.

Thinking that isn’t age specific though. Some people think and say stupid shit, regardless of age

Holesinmesocks · 21/04/2026 13:19

Only on Planet MN - how do we know this isn't a foot fetish weirdo?

I can’t stand anything with a toe post but anything else I am fine with. I’m lucky my feet are healthy, no fungus or verruca, no bunions (pay off for favouring comfy shoes in my youth) and I like wearing sandals in the summer.

Well then good luck to them - they must have very specific desires if they are getting off on this..

Allseeingallknowing · 21/04/2026 14:28

OP don’t worry about such a trivial thing!

MN has had weirdos of all sorts over the years, the hairy hand brigade lurk quite freely on here. The trick is to report them as soon as you can. Not saying OP is like that, but it's a random thing to worry about - over heating wearing socks in a presumably warm destination.
Now if her d was packing a heavy winter coat, muffler and full on wooly hat and ear muffs OP might have a point of concern. But who is an adult to police what another adult wears anyway?

alpacamonstera · 21/04/2026 15:33
