Daughter won't take her socks off on holiday

Hi,

I am going on holiday to Gran Canaria with my eldest daughter in a few weeks time. The weather of course will be quite warm and there's something that bugs me about my daughter when we go on a sunshine holiday. Whatever she is wearing on her feet (sliders, crocs & sandals) she will pair them with socks, even in boiling weather! Personally I am a flip flop and bare feet all day kind of woman. Is anyone else's son or daughter reluctant to take their socks off on holiday or is it just mine? I do worry she will overheat one of these days even at 21 years old. Is there anything I could say to her about this to convince her to ditch the socks?

OP posts:
MyDeftDuck · 20/04/2026 17:54

No one is going to overheat by wearing socks 🤣🤣

FarmGirl78 · 20/04/2026 17:55

Jeez I thought she was going to be 6 and adamant that she had to wear socks in the hotel pool. Cue a screaming fit when you tried to take them off her. Not 21 and just wearing what's the fashion. Too funny.

GucciBear · 20/04/2026 17:55

Bully!

Okiedokie123 · 20/04/2026 17:57

She’s 21. If she’s happy leave her be.

StephensLass1977 · 20/04/2026 17:57

Leave her alone.

TheChosenTwo · 20/04/2026 17:57

Overheating because of socks 😂😂😂

I was the same until about 3 years ago - I don’t like flip flops, they aren’t secure and all other summery shoes looked a bit like stuff my mum/gran would wear so I just stuck with trainers and socks or barefoot at the pool or beach.
Now I’m happy to go sightseeing in a pair of Birks but still wouldn’t be seen dead in them at home!

ilovesooty · 20/04/2026 17:57

This is the funniest thing I've read today.

DespairMode · 20/04/2026 17:59

Foot fetish

Squirrelchops1 · 20/04/2026 17:59

Carrot: Why don't you treat her to a nice pedicure and nail varnish?

stick: tell her she'll look a right twat with bright white feet and nice tanned legs

Doodadidi · 20/04/2026 18:00

Tattoo she doesn’t want you to see?

Krevlornswath · 20/04/2026 18:01

Just ridiculous OP, you obviously don't actually meaningfully believe she will overheat from wearing socks. Almost all adults with the exception of the very unwell, are perfectly capable of taking actions to regulate their own body temperature.

Crucially, just mind your own business. Nobody cares what your summer footwear preferences are and you should extend the same courtesy to her. Perhaps she is insecure about her feet, perhaps she simply finds it more comfortable - either way hardly worth noticing, not worth thinking about and rude and strange to comment on it to her.

Loulou4022 · 20/04/2026 18:02

TBH that’s not even an argument I’d bother having with a 3 year old let alone a 21 year old!!

oviraptor21 · 20/04/2026 18:03

MrsMitford3 · 20/04/2026 16:44

I bet if you wore socks and slides she'd ditch them soon enough 😂

This.

But there could be a whole host of reasons why she keeps her feet covered. Live and let live is what I say.

Neither is needed, she can just wear socks.

Lararoft · 20/04/2026 18:05

It’s just a fashion.. quite ok & her choice

Takersgonnatake · 20/04/2026 18:07

Point at and laugh at her gleaming white feet?

rougheredges · 20/04/2026 18:09

My daughter’s friend spent all of last years summer holiday with her parents wearing socks. This was because on their girls holiday 3 weeks before hand she’d lost a bet and had a penis and the name of their geography teacher tattood on her foot.

Have you seen your daughter’s feet recently?

brightnails · 20/04/2026 18:11

When I was a little bit younger than this, keeping my feet covered at all times was because I had a nail problem in my little toe nail and the next toe nail that looked horrible and I knew that no one would take it seriously and I finally showed my mum and I was right! actually I had to flipping beg the doctor (parents had to pay for appointment under that system) for the tablets which did eventually work. I’ve not seen anyone saying this so I am 🤷🏽‍♀️

saminamama · 20/04/2026 18:13

It’s fashionable for that generation

hahabahbag · 20/04/2026 16:58

My dd won’t show her feet (apart from sun lounger to pool) maybe it’s a young adult thing?

Nope, my husband won't be parted from his socks either. Only removed for bed and showers/baths, and he's the wrong side of 50. Thankfully he also refuses to wear sandals so socks and sandals aren't an issue.

I can recall a relative saying the same about her husband who is now in his late 80s. Decades ago they went to a nudist beach and her husband happily stripped everything off bar his shoes and socks which remained firmly on his feet throughout (that was far too much information for teenage me at the time, I did not want to think about people of my parents generation getting naked!).

Nettie1964 · 20/04/2026 18:16

Shes probably thinks her feet are ugly. My sister in law wears doc Martins 24/7 I think she wears them in bed. I asked why once she told me I said no ones feet are that bad she showed me they were.

ImmortalSnowman · 20/04/2026 18:16

She's not going to get a bacteria or parasitic infection like you risk being barefoot @NiftyMember

BMW6 · 20/04/2026 18:19

Good grief OP surely as an adult she is allowed to choose what she wears?

Don't be so controlling !

Darlinghag · 20/04/2026 18:19

I have a sibling a similar age, it seems to be a trend to be repulsed by feet or to quip something like ‘no free feet pics’. She wears her socks with all sorts of footwear. But on hot holidays she quickly realises she a) is overheating and b) while
its a thing in her part of the world, other young adults from other countries are normal and she’s the weirdo. And the feet are out.

so don’t worry about it, she’lo come round 😂😂

Amethystanddiamonds · 20/04/2026 18:19

You'd hate me. I wear trainers most the time on holiday. Unless I'm going to the pool/sea to swim I'm likely to have socks on. I have no desire to get loads of dust stuck to suncreamed feet unless absolutely necessary and if I'm on a city break I don't want exposed feet in a city environment. I'm also not fussed about tan lines as the UK is often too cold to be without a pair (or 2) of socks.
