Daughter won't take her socks off on holiday

Hi,

I am going on holiday to Gran Canaria with my eldest daughter in a few weeks time. The weather of course will be quite warm and there's something that bugs me about my daughter when we go on a sunshine holiday. Whatever she is wearing on her feet (sliders, crocs & sandals) she will pair them with socks, even in boiling weather! Personally I am a flip flop and bare feet all day kind of woman. Is anyone else's son or daughter reluctant to take their socks off on holiday or is it just mine? I do worry she will overheat one of these days even at 21 years old. Is there anything I could say to her about this to convince her to ditch the socks?

OP posts:
ArachneArachne · 20/04/2026 20:46

Is she wrecking your image/your holiday Insta, OP? Thoughts and prayers, and only take photos from the knees up.

Build5bear · 20/04/2026 20:51

Could she be hiding self harm? I used to wear socks everywhere in my teens and twenties. I would make deep cuts to my ankles and legs before I had therapy and help to stop doing it. They’re still scarred 20 years later .

JLou08 · 20/04/2026 20:51

I don't like being without socks. The feeling of anything other than cotton touching my feet is awful. Wearing socks really doesn't make any difference to body temperature, there is no way someone is going to overheat from wearing socks.

Blimms · 20/04/2026 20:52

Acutissima · 20/04/2026 20:39

Hhmmm. Is OP actually some sort of weird intergenerational socks and sandals pervert, trying to get our stories to wank over? I can't even be arsed to check their post history, the internet has jaded me. And yet I am not surprised if so. This post just seems so odd.

I hadn’t thought of that but it’s a real possibility.

Imacelebritygotit · 20/04/2026 20:55

LMAO I CANT, IF NOT FOR AGE DIFFERENCE AND THE FACT THAT I WAS IN GRAN CANARIA FEW WEEKS AGO ID THINK MY MOTHER WROTE THIS POST

People ask if this is a joke post but this is how my mum is

i was just in gc with her and other family she kept telling me she didn’t approve of my outfit. When I told her not to comment on my outfit again few hours later I turn around and see her laughing with some people on loungers. More like she was laughing The couple had kind of a confused look in their face.

i ask her what that is about, turns out she came up to some random couple to make fun of my outfit. Look at my daughter’s outfit.

she inspects my clothes when we are standing getting up close all up in my face and clothes.

I refused to wear belt she liked few times she got up and began physically putting it on me!

my dad offered me a cottage cheese smoothie, I said no I hate cottage cheese. She began lecturing me always since you were a kid favourite word NO, NO, NO,NO. You have to try new foods. You have to make yourself like stuff. One bite. Cmon. Open mouth. Cmon.

when I asked her to pass me something she goes you are not getting that is pancakes, cake etc bad for you.

whenever i am cooking, just getting fruits or vegetables out of bag, haven’t even got them out of bag yet she goes DONT FORGET TO WASH THEM. They are dirty! Wash them! Every single time.

when I was 16 and doctor asked me questions she kept answering for me not letting get word in and when doctor asked about my period she answered for me she snapped and literally said do you look in her underwear??? How would you know??? My god Let your daughter speak!!!!

heard her telling a friend on phone “she disobeys me and refuses to eat meat” I’ve been a vegetarian for 20 years. BTW she used to sneak meat into my food

told some guy at work “my daughter is a vegetarian too can you call her and try to talk to her how bad it is for you and tell her she is not getting enough protein like that”

I once refused remedy she offered when sick saying I hate onions she began yelling FINE BE SICK!!!

at 21 she saw a can of coke a few times when visiting and began yelling “you will not be drinking that again GOT IT, do you understand me!!!” and threw it away

now aged 28 she constantly bothers me about stuff like lady in op does

socks, not wearing slippers etc

she made posts in facebook groups like op did my daughter this my daughter that and people were shocked

so I believe this post is 1000000 percent real

you are very lucky if you think this a joke post

Maybe so. But with attitudes like this:
I do worry she will overheat one of these days even at 21 years old.
she's lucky to find anyone to go with her at all. Beggars can't be choosers.

Absolutely. With a mother like that who needs enemies!!

DespairMode · 20/04/2026 20:59

Why are you going away with her at 28, when she is so unkind? You can say no

This is going to sound very sad and pathetic but I have no one else to go with.

Only child, no cousins, no family other than my mum, single, all my friends either:

don’t go on holidays,
or go with their boyfriends/partners or their mums or families.
Others (who are immigrants) go see their family abroad in their home country every year instead of holiday.

I haven’t been on holiday since I was 16 and she promised and swore she will behave

CareBearClaire · 20/04/2026 21:13

Teenagers have a thing these days about bare feet - my daughter and her friends cringe at the sight and mention of bare feet. They call them ‘grippers’ and are disgusted with bare feet, talk about how disgusting it is when their teachers get their grippers out i.e. wear sandals with bare feet. I kid you not. 😂

My 16yo calls them the exact same thing 😊

Sorry to read your post. That doesn’t sound fun at all. I think if that were me I’d rather have a holiday on my own!! Happily stay in a nice lodge in the UK for peace and quiet!!

smithers99 · 20/04/2026 21:31

Accidentally put YANBU.

YABU. I live in sliders and socks all year round. Don't care who thinks I look ridiculous. At least I'm comfy.

BeenThere2Often · 20/04/2026 22:34

I am convinced that these crazier OPs are AI.

This is the second post in recent days that sounds AI generated.

Anyone else see the one about the person with the colleague who lies about having two dogs when she only had the one? 🙄

It's not pathetic - but I'm sad you can't go away yourself. I've been camping alone, on a package holiday alone, a friend goes travelling in groups where most people have signed up alone - there are better options out there than being with your mum, or not going at all! You're young enough to interail and stay in hostels. Maybe start with a weekend away and build it up!

I bet if you wore socks and slides she'd ditch them soon enough 😂

She’s 21, not 12. I think she’s probably beyond finding parents embarrassing

Sounds as if no matter how much it bothers you, you've never talked it out with her.

Personally, I wish more people would wear socks.
1)Socks absorb sweat
2)Socks cushion your feet
3)Socks protect your feet from abrasion.

Why would anyone prefer to put their nice clean foot into a filthy piece of footwear with its accumulation of dirt and sweat - when you could instead put the nice clean foot into a nice clean sock?

If your feet smell, your socks will stink too.

However at 21 I’m sure the DD is capable of deciding how to regulate the temperature so OP is BU.

there was a typo in the first line - it should read ‘sweat’ not ‘smell’

You said socks absorb sweat. And I said that when they do that, they smell.

Nobody is being accused of having smelly feet

why on earth is this an issue? never mind not getting the obession with sun holidays

76evie · Yesterday 01:28

It’s fashion now, my young adult children cringe at me wearing sliders or crocs with no socks. As a teenager of the 90’s, it’s ingrained in my that socks and sliders are a no no & even wearing them with trainers they shouldn’t been seen, have to wear trainer socks. Whereas mine wear crew socks with trainers or Birkenstock clogs even with shorts on holiday & socks with a dress & trainers/clogs. The only thing they don’t wear socks with is sandals. I can’t get my head round it but whom am I to tell them what to wear. Other than nagging about sun cream I leave them to it.

MrsToothyBitch · Yesterday 07:45

I love going barefoot at home and live in summer sandals (in summer) - and I wear liners in nice flats and trainer socks in trainers. I find visible socks with nice outfits are often such an unchic clanger. A visual flat note. I do have slippers for v cold weather or for other peoples houses / hotels!

I also really dislike the enormous socks the kids wear with shorts - and the sort of 80s/90s revival thing they have going on, particularly with clothes that look like they've been in a cupboard, uncared for since the 80s / 90s. I always wonder when the wearer last had a wash. Particularly if paired with shaggy hair and those straggly taches and Jeffrey Dahmer glasses the young men favour. Millenial friends agree.

However- it's fashion. So they should be left to get on with it. Eventually the tables will turn and hemlines - and socklines- will change.
